Many library metrics and statistics that are gathered regularly by accreditation agencies, publishers, and other entities to inform stakeholders have stagnated and are no longer effective in illustrating library value. In this talk, we will highlight measures collected by accreditation agencies and publishers that are not effective, and then describe potential ways to have short-term and long-term impact on changing these national metrics so that they better represent libraries of the 21st century.

Grand Valley State University Libraries has found a statistically significant positive correlation between librarian-led instruction and student retention. The libraries’ Head of Instructional Services and the university's Institutional Analysis department worked together to connect library instruction with student-level data and then analyze that data over several academic years. This presentation will outline the data collection process, analysis methods, limitations, and outcomes of a longitudinal study.

Kevin Tanner addresses the importance of professional identity in librarianship. In the Summer 2015 semester, he completed an independent study on the construction of professional identity of librarians on Twitter through professional development and networking. During this session, he shares the results of that study and give suggestions on how you can begin to find your own professional identity while still retaining your individuality. While there are many stereotypes about librarians, they are not “one-size-fits-all” professionals, and a new modern image of the professional has begun to emerge in the digital age through a thoughtful reflection on identity.

Electronic library content must be accessible to students with disabilities, however many institutions have focused on accessibility of physical facilities without considering the requirements for online information. Western Kentucky University (WKU) developed a required, automated program to audit WKU Libraries’ electronic content including, the website and library database vendors. Additionally, WKU began requesting documentation of accessibility features in the form of a Voluntary Product Accessibility Template (VPAT). This presentation will focus on both our internal auditing efforts and the challenges of obtaining accurate vendor documentation.

After several years of planning, the Thomas G. Carpenter Library received the funding to transform the first and second floors of the library, enabling us to increase seating capacity and create a modern showcase of collaborative learning spaces. This talk addressed the practical matters of moving and caring for the library's art collection during such a project and highlighted the new space, collaboration stations, interior design, furniture, and new sculptures.

The Libraries They Are A-Changin’: How Libraries Reorganize, John Novak, Annette Day

This paper will report on the results of a study of library reorganizations in the literature. The authors identified five steps common to all library reorganizations, and this paper describes those steps as well as two management change theories most mentioned in the literature--the eight-step process of change by John Kotter and Reframing Organizations by Lee G. Bolman and Terrence E. Deal. The paper will draw conclusions formed by a comparison of these theoretical models to the practice and real life experience of reorganizations as described by libraries in the literature.

The Open Parks Network serves the global parks community by providing the information, tools, and solutions to support the stewardship of the natural and cultural assets of protected areas. To date, over 350,000 items and 1.5 million pages of material has been digitized as part of this project. This presentation details the project's background and strategies used for digitization and metadata creation. Additionally, the Abraham Lincoln Birthplace Donor Card Collection project is detailed. This webinar presentation was conducted as part of the LYRASIS "Second Friday" series.

Students love doing hands-on work with multimedia – images, audio, video and Web sites. Unfortunately, software to do such work so can be costly and difficult to install. This hands-on presentation will show participants free tools for editing images, audio, video and Web site creation as well as how to incorporate them into their computer literacy courses. Most of the tools that will be shown are Web-based; students only need an Internet connection to use them. Since the session is short, hyperlinks to tutorial videos, sample assignments and grading rubrics will be made available to participants.

The creation of the course-embedded Critical Thinking & information Evaluation Module series resulted from the need for undergraduate students to start their academic careers with a framework for evaluating information. The Corpus Juris Civilis, created by order of Byzantine Emperor Justinian I to compile the laws in force at the time, would become a vital foundation for both the civil law and common law traditions. Important figures in the development of the United States’ law used principles listed in the Corpus as a guide, and to this day legal scholars and historians still refer to it.
