Engineering A New Home: Creating A Repository Collection For Faculty And Building A Larger Digital Presence For The School Of Engineering, Lauren Todd, Emily Symonds Stenberg

University Libraries Presentations

This talk is an expanded version of one given at the 2015 MOBIUS conference. Washington University librarians Emily Stenberg and Lauren Todd explain how they created and manage a collection in the university’s repository Open Scholarship for the Computer Science and Engineering department. This presentation will highlight how they developed a step-by-step workflow, addressed customization requests from the department, what really happened once that plan was implemented, and how they handle Bepress troubleshooting and faculty concerns. The presenters will also discuss how this project has helped them offer Open Scholarship as a service to other engineering faculty.

Growing Gkr: Increasing The Undergraduate Research Component, Debra G. Skinner

Library Faculty Presentations

The Georgia Knowledge Repository (GKR), an initiative of GALILEO, is a central repository that contains academic and intellectual works produced by Georgia colleges and universities. Established in 2013 and comprised of over 100,000 item records, GKR increases the importance of open access scholarly communication and joins a growing number of academic digital repositories. Colleges and universities are developing research seminars, open access journals, and other scholarly initiatives on campus. Libraries who manage their institutional repository are collaborating with campus departments to preserve the scholarly works of these initiatives. Pampering Uploaders: Easing The Metadata Upload Process, Craighton T. Hippenhammer Jul 2015

Pampering Uploaders: Easing The Metadata Upload Process, Craighton T. Hippenhammer

Faculty Scholarship – Library Science

Digital Commons has done a pretty good job at keeping its metadata forms user friendly. First, the form should be as simple as we can make it. Hide metadata fields that are not needed for the document type at hand. Second, add fields that you need but other universities may not. Digital Commons’ support staff has no problem creating special fields for us. Third, use dropdown lists to pick options when options are limited and known. And fourth, make the most-often-chosen option into the readily visible default option. All of these will save time and cut down on confusion.

Do You Hear What I See? Assessing Accessibility Of Digital Commons And Contentdm, Wendy Walker, Teressa M. Keenan Jun 2015

Do You Hear What I See? Assessing Accessibility Of Digital Commons And Contentdm, Wendy Walker, Teressa M. Keenan

Mansfield Library Faculty Publications

This article discusses the accessibility of two content management systems, Berkeley Electronic Press’ Digital Commons and OCLC’s CONTENTdm, widely used in libraries to host institutional repository and digital collections content. Based on observations by a visually-impaired student who used the JAWS screen reader to view the design and display of digital objects in both systems, we provide a general overview of the accessibility of each system. We discuss potential suggestions for accessibility-related improvements, and we offer ideas for library administrators of these systems about how to maximize the back-end configurations for accessibility.
