In the fall 2009 semester, the Syracuse University Library launched a pilot program to test two Kindle DX e-book readers as content delivery devices. The pilot objectives included exploring additional options for access to curricular resources that are cost-prohibitive and frequently requested by library users, testing a new technology, i.e., Kindle DX, for delivery of ebooks, gauging user reactions to e-book readers, and using Kindle statistics and user feedback to develop or modify services and technologies. Through the pilot, the Library gained practical experience with a new technology and attempted to determine whether an e-book reader loan program would interest …

Artists' Papers In The George Arents Research Library: Sources For The Study Of Twentieth-Century American Art, Mark Weimer, Donna Cook
Mark F. Weimer
For nearly thirty years the George Arents Research Library for Special Collections at Syracuse University has actively acquired primary materials to support research and study in the field of art history including, as outlined in an internal collection development statement of 1961, "the papers of architects, artists, sculptors, industrial designers, cartoonists, photographers, art critics, educators, and the records of professional associations and galleries". Beginning with the gift of the papers of sculptors James Earle Fraser, Laura Gardin Fraser, and Anna Hyatt Huntington in the 1960s, and continuing to the recent acquisition of collections relating to Diego Rivera and Philip Evergood, …

Students today face a daily explosion of information resources and the challenge of using these resources effectively and responsibly. Information literacy instruction (ILI) requires a shift in focus from teaching specific information resources to a set of critical thinking skills involving the use of information. ILI in an academic setting includes a variety of instructional approaches, such as course-related library instruction sessions, course-integrated projects, online tutorials, and stand-alone courses. Those running formal ILI programs consider curricular objectives, invoking combinations of instructional solutions over a period of time. This ERIC Digest examines characteristics of successful programs, presents specific examples of approaches …
How To Encourage Students In A Bibliographic Instruction Session To Use Critical And Creative Thinking Skills: A Pilot Study, John Olson
John Olson
This article will describe a pilot study on how applications and methods are used to help students discover and apply critical and creative thinking skills taught during a fifty-minute bibliographic instruction class. Learning these skills will help students understand how to ask questions of themselves in assessing which information sources to use for class assignments in the future.

The Syracuse University Library Radius Project: Development Of A Non-Destructive Playback System For Cylinder Recordings, William Penn, Martha Hanson
The Syracuse University Library Radius Project: Development Of A Non-Destructive Playback System For Cylinder Recordings, William Penn, Martha Hanson
Martha Hanson
Syracuse University Library's Belfer Audio Laboratory and Archive (Belfer) holds nearly 20,000 cylinder recordings produced during the 'cylinder era' of 1895-1929. Many cylinders have become deteriorated over the past one hundred years and cannot be played without suffering serious physical damage inflicted by the sharp styli (needles) of traditional mechanical playback machines. In some cases, even one pass of a stylus may irrevocably damage a cylinder. In response to the playback challenges of cylinder recordings, Syracuse University Library developed the Radius Project: Development of a Non-Destructive Playback System for Cylinder Recordings, funded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services. …
Library Catalog In Transition, Charles Tremper
Library Catalog In Transition, Charles Tremper
Charles Tremper
This article describes the history of the card catalog, along with the many problems inherent in the system as it was being practiced in 1981. Added to these issues were antiquated subject headings and imposing storage issues. The author suggests that the card catalog will eventually be rightfully replaced fully by computer catalogs.

Engineers have been important to every civilization, ancient and modern. They invent, design, build and produce most of the products that make up the present civilization. They find out the solutions to the practical problems faced by the society. Hence, they play a key role in socio-economic development of any nation. Today, engineers require not only adequate technological ability and problem solving skills, but also skills like cooperation, communication, and presentation skills, business ethics and inter-personal relationship. They must have deep commitment to safety, reliability, quality and sustainability of all engineering operations in which they take part. Engineering colleges have …

Citations In Psychology Phd Theses: An Obsolescence Study, N. Zafrunnisha, V. Pulla Reddy
Dr. V. Pulla Reddy
An obsolescence study is one of the main areas of bibliometrics in library and information science. The study attempts to discover the obsolescence rate of psychology literature cited in the 141 doctoral theses awarded by the S.V. University Tirupati, Osmania University, Hyderabad, and Andhra University, Visakhapattanam, from 1963-2005. Half-life of journal citations in psychology was found to be 14 years and 19 years for book citations.

What About The Book? Google-Izing The Catalog With Tables Of Contents, Angi Faiks, Amy Radermacher, Amy Sheehan

One of the many ways to meet the challenge of offering users a better search experience—and to continue the library's existence as a “growing organism” (Ranganathan)—in the current information atmosphere is to provide more text to search against, just as Google's Book Search does. One method for achieving this is to add tables of contents (TOC) and summary notes into a catalog's bibliographic records for books, thereby offering additional, highly relevant search terms into a library's database. While adding access points is not a new notion, libraries can start to meet users' expectations by providing them with more information about …

A Case Study: Data Management In Biomedical Engineering, Glenn Gaudette, Donna Kafel
Glenn R. Gaudette
In a biomedical engineering lab at Worcester Polytechnic Institute, co-author Dr. Glenn R. Gaudette and his research team are investigating the effects of stem cell therapy on the regeneration of function in damaged cardiac tissue in laboratory rats. Each instance of stem cell experimentation on a rat yields hundreds of data sets that must be carefully captured, documented and securely stored so that the data will be easily accessed and retrieved for papers, reports, further research, and validation of findings, while meeting NIH guidelines for data sharing. After a brief introduction to the bioengineering field and stem cell research, this …
