Measuring Usability In The Database Review Process: Results From A Pilot, Ilana Stonebraker

Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research

The objective of this study is to examine the impact of incorporating user experience study methods into library database purchase and renewal. Purdue University Libraries introduced a heuristic evaluation into an existing yearly database review. Commonly used in usability and human factors engineering, heuristic evaluation is an innovative and dynamic method for librarians to evaluate electronic resources and provide expert feedback to database vendors. A form was developed to streamline the process for the librarians involved. In total, eight librarians evaluated 37 databases as a pilot project. This paper describes the outcome of the pilot.

Focus Group Report On The Teaching Resources Collection, Tamar Brown, Marilyn Geller, Anne-Marie Mulligan, Kate Thornhill, Jaime Wimmer

Library Reports

The Lesley University Libraries’ Assessment Workgroup conducted focus group interviews with faculty and students in order to plan for the future development of the library's Teaching Resources Collection, which includes K-8 curriculum materials and the Evelyn M. Finnegan Collection of high-quality children's literature. We spoke with a total of seven faculty members and two students, a very small sample, but our conversations did offer the library a starting point for thinking about how to improve the visibility of the collection, the space in which it is housed, and patron ability to access the materials. Thinking And Making: Art And Craft In Library Of Congress Classification, Rochelle Smith Dec 2015

Thinking And Making: Art And Craft In Library Of Congress Classification, Rochelle Smith

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Why are art and craft so widely separated in the Library of Congress Classification (LC) System? All classification systems give insight into worldviews prevalent at the time they were created, and library systems are especially illustrative of the cultures and cultural moments which shaped them. The separation of art and craft in LC, in N and TT respectively, compared to their collocation in LC’s contemporaries, Dewey Decimal Classification and Cutter’s Expansive Classification, suggests divergent views of the arts within librarianship, illuminating American views on the relative definitions of art and craft from the mid-nineteenth through the early twentieth centuries.

A New Approach To Evaluating Information: A Reflection On Radar, Kevin Tanner, Kim Mcphee Dec 2015

A New Approach To Evaluating Information: A Reflection On Radar, Kevin Tanner, Kim Mcphee

Western Libraries Presentations

For instruction librarians, teaching information literacy (IL) skills is often an important aspect of any lesson plan. One area of IL includes the critical evaluation of sources, an essential skill that students need to succeed as aspiring scholars and researchers. This ability to differentiate “good” from “bad” information is beneficial to students beyond their academic careers, and will help them navigate the “sea of information” for the rest of their lives. Typically, such evaluation skills are taught through applying the CRAAP test: Currency, Relevance, Authority, Accuracy, and Purpose. While humorous and memorable, the name of this test devalues the usefulness …
