Objectives: The primary objectives of this study are to gauge the various levels of Research Data Service academic libraries provide based on demographic factors, gauging RDS growth since 2011, and what obstacles may prevent expansion or growth of services.

Methods: Survey of academic institutions through stratified random sample of ACRL library directors across the U.S. and Canada. Frequencies and chi-square analysis were applied, with some responses grouped into broader categories for analysis.

Results: Minimal to no change for what services were offered between survey years, and interviews with library directors were conducted to help explain this lack …

A Case Study: Data Management In Biomedical Engineering, Glenn Gaudette, Donna Kafel

Glenn R. Gaudette

In a biomedical engineering lab at Worcester Polytechnic Institute, co-author Dr. Glenn R. Gaudette and his research team are investigating the effects of stem cell therapy on the regeneration of function in damaged cardiac tissue in laboratory rats. Each instance of stem cell experimentation on a rat yields hundreds of data sets that must be carefully captured, documented and securely stored so that the data will be easily accessed and retrieved for papers, reports, further research, and validation of findings, while meeting NIH guidelines for data sharing. After a brief introduction to the bioengineering field and stem cell research, this …

Dataq: A Collaborative Platform For Answering Research Data Questions In Libraries, Yasmeen Shorish, Sarah Pickle, Christie A. Wiley, Megan Bresnahan, Andrew M. Johnson

Libraries

DataQ is an IMLS-funded project led by the University of Colorado Boulder Libraries, GWLA, and GPN to develop an online knowledge-base of research data questions and answers curated for and by the library community. Publicly submitted questions to DataQ are reviewed by an Editorial Team of experts from 15 institutions across the United States. The site also includes links to resources, best practices, and practical approaches to working with researchers to address specific research data issues. This update from members of the Editorial Team will discuss outcomes and future directions following the first year of the DataQ project.

Web Resources From Mdls 15, Kristin Briney

Midwest Data Librarian Symposium

The symposium wrap up was facilitated by Jamene Brooks-Kieffer (Kansas), who recapped each session and the overall themes of the event. She utilized a garden metaphor to explain that all data services exist in different landscapes and that not every idea will transplant into every library/garden. Brooks-Kieffer then directed participants through a free-writing exercise about taking one idea to transplant to their libaries, ending with participants partnering up to help each other be accountable to transplanting this symposium idea after the event. This is a list of some of the web resources mentioned during the wrap up session.
