The Libraries They Are A-Changin’: How Libraries Reorganize, John Novak, Annette Day Nov 2015

The Libraries They Are A-Changin’: How Libraries Reorganize, John Novak, Annette Day

Library Faculty Publications

This paper will report on the results of a study of library reorganizations in the literature. The authors identified five steps common to all library reorganizations, and this paper describes those steps as well as two management change theories most mentioned in the literature--the eight-step process of change by John Kotter and Reframing Organizations by Lee G. Bolman and Terrence E. Deal. The paper will draw conclusions formed by a comparison of these theoretical models to the practice and real life experience of reorganizations as described by libraries in the literature.

Building Bridges For Student Success, Cindy Gruwell Nov 2015

Building Bridges For Student Success, Cindy Gruwell

Library Faculty Publications

This book chapter describes the collaborative efforts of an academic librarian and nursing faculty in the development of a robust health sciences-focused information literacy instruction workshop. After several years of “standard” IL sessions, both the librarian and faculty wanted to create a more dynamic, active learning environment for students enrolled in the nursing research and evidence-based practice course. In addition, the author reflects on the challenges and successes of working with faculty when a nursing department is undergoing programmatic and curriculum changes.

Conflicts Of Interest And Boundary Setting For Growth In Faculty-To-Faculty Mentoring, Barbara E. Weeg Oct 2015

Conflicts Of Interest And Boundary Setting For Growth In Faculty-To-Faculty Mentoring, Barbara E. Weeg

Library Faculty Publications

In higher education, mentoring is often structured as a relationship between a tenured, senior faculty member and an untenured, junior faculty member to ease the mentee's transition to the organization and to the tripartite faculty responsibilities of teaching, research, and service. Conflicts of interest emerge if the mentor, who has been serving as confidant and guide, participates in the promotion and tenure assessment of the mentee. Is any information shared by the mentee during the mentoring considered confidential? Relevant research and mentorship documents will be analyzed to determine if this conflict of interest is acknowledged and if strategies for setting …

Practical Guidance For Integrating Data Management Into Long-Term Ecological Monitoring Projects, Robert D. Sutter, Susan Wainscott, John R. Boetsch, Craig Palmer, David J. Rugg Sep 2015

Practical Guidance For Integrating Data Management Into Long-Term Ecological Monitoring Projects, Robert D. Sutter, Susan Wainscott, John R. Boetsch, Craig Palmer, David J. Rugg

Library Faculty Publications

Long-term monitoring and research projects are essential to understand ecological change and the effectiveness of management activities. An inherent characteristic of long-term projects is the need for consistent data collection over time, requiring rigorous attention to data management and quality assurance. Recent papers have provided broad recommendations for data management; however, practitioners need more detailed guidance and examples. We present general yet detailed guidance for the development of comprehensive, concise, and effective data management for monitoring projects. The guidance is presented as a graded approach, matching the scale of data management to the needs of the organization and the complexity …

The Quest For Lgbtiq Ebooks, Rachel S. Wexelbaum Aug 2015

The Quest For Lgbtiq Ebooks, Rachel S. Wexelbaum

Library Faculty Publications

An increasing percentage of LGBTIQ information seekers desire online resources over print. The rise of EBooks—cheap, convenient, and available online—have led a significant number of LGBTIQ readers to abandon libraries and bookstores for Amazon and other online EBook providers. Meanwhile, public, academic, and school librarians have been slow to assess the user needs and format preferences of LGBTIQ patrons, and continue to focus on the acquisition of print LGBTIQ books and access to these materials. While more publishers are providing EBook versions of LGBTIQ titles, and authors are giving permission to digitize “classic” LGBTIQ works, public library EBook collections such …

Censorship Of Online Lgbtiq Content In Libraries, Rachel S. Wexelbaum Aug 2015

Censorship Of Online Lgbtiq Content In Libraries, Rachel S. Wexelbaum

Library Faculty Publications

Historically, librarians in the United States have addressed censorship of LGBTIQ print materials. Most of the time, school and public libraries have chosen to “self-censor”. In other words, librarians will either choose not to select LGBT materials, shelve LGBT materials in hidden locations, fail to promote LGBTIQ materials, “hide” LGBT materials during processing and cataloging, or remove LGBTIQ materials from their collections completely. The American Libraries Association does not condone these practices, as they go against the American Libraries Association Bill of Rights.

Unfortunately, librarians working in public libraries and K-12 school media centers in the United States may be …

Gaming, Gamification And Byod In Academic And Library Settings: Bibliographic Overview, Plamen Miltenoff Jun 2015

Gaming, Gamification And Byod In Academic And Library Settings: Bibliographic Overview, Plamen Miltenoff

Lev Vygotsky’s “Zone of proximal development” and his Sociocultural Theory opened new opportunities for interpretations of the learning process. Vygotsky’s ideas overlapped Jean Piaget’s and Erik Erickson’s assertions that cooperative learning, added to experimental learning, enhances the learning process. Peer interaction, according to them, is quintessential in accelerating the learning process (Piaget, 1970; Erickson, 1977; Vygotsky, 1978). Robert Gagné, B.F. Skinner, Albert Bandura, and others contributed and constructivism established itself as a valid theory in learning. Further, an excellent chapter of social learning theories is presented by Anderson, & Dron (2014).

Games are type of cooperative learning. Games embody the …

Reorganizing Through Lean Principles, John Novak, Richard J. W. Zwiercan

Library Faculty Publications

In August 2014, the director of the Collections, Acquisitions, and Discovery division within the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) Libraries announced that the division would be reorganized to best use the skills and strengths of existing staff. This division, responsible for acquiring, organizing, maintaining, and making discoverable all needed and relevant materials would be composed of three departments, and the Resource Acquisition, Sharing, and Digital Scholarship department (containing the Resource Acquisition and Sharing Unit) would be one of them. To fulfill the goals of the reorganization, the acquisitions team used Lean principles and tools, specifically the value stream map, …

Wanting To Do More But Bound To Do Less: A Law Librarian's Dilemma, Paul Jerome Mclaughlin Jr. Apr 2015

Wanting To Do More But Bound To Do Less: A Law Librarian's Dilemma, Paul Jerome Mclaughlin Jr.

Library Faculty Publications

The role of the law librarian has changed from managing the contents of a library’s collection of books to knowing how to find information sources located around the world contained in a variety of formats, taking part in instruction, and participating in networking activities. Law librarians are constrained by legal and professional codes. If they are cautious, law librarians can assist, instruct, and reach out to public patrons and students while operating within the professional guidelines that govern them.

Living The Library Of The Future: A Reminiscence, M. Keith Ewing Mar 2015

Living The Library Of The Future: A Reminiscence, M. Keith Ewing

Library Faculty Publications

How do we create the library of the future? Throughout my library career I've attempted to make the library of the future a reality. Starting with Holorith cards to Dialog and BRS AfterDark, to COMCats and Online catalogs, to CD-ROM database networks, to Gopher, InfoTrac 2000, and the Web; from paper to media to bits; from preservation to digital curation; from owning and storing to licensing and accessing to creating and collaborating, I learned that we're always creating the library of the future, that it's always just beyond our reach. While everything is new, much remains and some returns.

Creating Computer Availability Maps, Scott Bacon Jan 2015

Creating Computer Availability Maps, Scott Bacon

Library Faculty Publications

During the fall semester of 2012, the Kimbel Library and Bryan Information Commons conducted a LibQUAL+ survey to gauge how patron needs were being met. Many survey respondents commented that there were not enough computers for use in the library buildings. This issue was remedied by the addition of over 70 percent more computer workstations in the new commons building, a move that was well received by patrons. However, these desktops still filled up quickly, especially during midterms and finals, so the library decided to create a dynamic system to show patrons which computers were available for use at any …

The Future Of Institutional Repositories At Small Academic Institutions: Analysis And Insights, Mary J. Wu Jan 2015

The Future Of Institutional Repositories At Small Academic Institutions: Analysis And Insights, Mary J. Wu

Library Faculty Publications

Institutional repositories (IRs) established at universities and academic libraries over a decade ago, large and small, have encountered challenges along the way in keeping faith with their original objective: to collect, preserve, and disseminate the intellectual output of an institution in digital form. While all institutional repositories have experienced the same obstacles relating to a lack of faculty participation, those at small universities face unique challenges. This article examines causes of low faculty contribution to IR content growth, particularly at small academic institutions. It also offers a first-hand account of building and developing an institutional repository at a small university. …

You Can “Like” It On Paper Too: Reaching Digital Students Through Analog Displays, Rachael Muszkiewicz Jan 2015

You Can “Like” It On Paper Too: Reaching Digital Students Through Analog Displays, Rachael Muszkiewicz

Library Faculty Publications

In response to literature on libraries as space and the Millennial generation, this chapter speaks to the importance of the academic library as both social and communal space and how to communicate with today’s college students. These case studies illustrate that students can be reached through analog displays, building an unconscious community between students as a group and students with the library. Community built within the academic library is discussed in light of these analog displays, the current library literature and via sociological positions. It is concluded that although it is thought that students want digital or online communication only, …

Ethnography In Action: Active Learning In Academic Library Outreach To Middle School Students, Samantha Godbey, Nancy Fawley, Xan Goodman, Susan Wainscott Jan 2015

Ethnography In Action: Active Learning In Academic Library Outreach To Middle School Students, Samantha Godbey, Nancy Fawley, Xan Goodman, Susan Wainscott

Library Faculty Publications

This article describes an outreach activity developed and coordinated by academic librarians as part of a state program for low-income middle school students. Rather than offering a traditional library tour, the library organizers wanted to provide the middle school students with a meaningful experience that would encourage active participation, critical thinking, and alleviate library anxiety. As a spin on the traditional tour, students applied an ethnographic approach to learning about the library. The authors describe the development and implementation of the activity and provide recommendations for other librarians involved in outreach to K-12 students.

Library Instruction And Themed Composition Courses: An Investigation Of Factors That Impact Student Learning, Erin E. Rinto, Elisa I. Cogbill-Seiders Jan 2015

Library Instruction And Themed Composition Courses: An Investigation Of Factors That Impact Student Learning, Erin E. Rinto, Elisa I. Cogbill-Seiders

Library Faculty Publications

Many academic libraries partner with English composition in order to teach first year students skills related to academic research and writing. Due to the partnership between information literacy and first-year writing programs, it is important to evaluate how these programs can best support one another. The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of two factors on student information literacy skill development: library instruction and section theme—defined here as class sections of the English 102 (ENG 102) program developed around a central topic selected by the instructor. A random sample of annotated bibliographies from 95 sections of ENG …

Naming And Reframing: A Taxonomy Of Attacks On Knowledge Organization, Tina Gross Jan 2015

Naming And Reframing: A Taxonomy Of Attacks On Knowledge Organization, Tina Gross

Library Faculty Publications

Most knowledge organization practices have opinionated detractors. Some criticisms are informed and serious, but unsubstantiated assertions and fatuous dismissals are so commonplace that practitioners grow weary of the perpetual need to refute them. Many have had the experience of conducting and publishing research that contradicts a popular misguided claim, and then seeing this evidence have little effect on the continued repetition of the claim. This paper (which is part polemical essay) will attempt to contribute another tool for tackling this problem: a taxonomy of attacks on knowledge organization. Categorizing and devising names for the major strains of deprecation of knowledge …

Queering Wikipedia, Rachel S. Wexelbaum, Katie Herzog, Lane Rasberry Jan 2015

Queering Wikipedia, Rachel S. Wexelbaum, Katie Herzog, Lane Rasberry

Library Faculty Publications

Wikipedia has become the ubiquitous, often maligned, free global online reference resource. In certain countries, it may be the only available LGBTIQ reference resource. To increase the diversity of voices, genders, and cultures among its contributors and editors, the Wikimedia Foundation has made it a strategic goal to recruit and foster more women, people of color, and other underrepresented individuals—including LGBTIQ populations (Wikimedia Foundation, 2011). While critics question the authority, accuracy, and objectivity of Wikipedia entries, “Wikipedians” (active contributors and editors) from a wide variety of subject specialization communities interact in the creation, maintenance, and expansion of each entry, thus …

Still A Lot To Lose: The Role Of Controlled Vocabulary In Keyword Searching, Tina Gross, Arlene G. Taylor, Daniel N. Joudrey

Library Faculty Publications

In their 2005 study, Gross and Taylor found that more than a third of records retrieved by keyword searches would be lost without subject headings. A review of the literature since then shows that numerous studies, in various disciplines, have found that a quarter to a third of records returned in a keyword search would be lost without controlled vocabulary. Other writers, though, have continued to suggest that controlled vocabulary be discontinued. Addressing criticisms of the Gross/Taylor study, this study replicates the search process in the same online catalog, but after the addition of automated enriched metadata such as tables …
