When I started as an IR manager at Nova Southeastern University (September 2014), the IR had been live for 6 months and one of the in process pilot projects was a journal with 219 back issues dating to 1990. The journal was still on the demonstration site when I started. In this presentation I will discuss the ways in which I interacted with the journal staff, the full migration of all issues and the ensuing projects that have developed due to the primary editor’s interest. These include a conference, book publishing and four additional journals. One of the most important …

Becoming The Gothic Archive: From Digital Collection To Digital Humanities, Rose Fortier, Heather G. James

Rose Fortier

The Gothic Archive is the flagship digital humanities project for the Marquette University library. The project was birthed from a simple digital collection, and through the partnership of faculty and librarians, was transformed into something more. The core tenets of digital collection creation were adhered to in order to create a solid foundation upon which to build the Archive. The expertise of both groups and communication were key in the evolution of the collection, and in discovering and highlighting the relationships between the objects. This case study reviews the steps Marquette took in creating the collection and taking it to …

Microaggressions: Small Actions That Are A Big Deal, Molly Higgins, Charlotte Roh Jun 2015

Microaggressions: Small Actions That Are A Big Deal, Molly Higgins, Charlotte Roh

Charlotte Roh

“Microaggressions” refer to those brief occurrences and encounters that subtly reinforce systems of power and privilege. The term can be applied across groups, including but certainly not limited to people of color, LGBTQ individuals, and individuals with disabilities. Libraries and information organizations are not immune to these microaggressions. They exist in our library catalogues, archives, research, professional organizations and interpersonal interactions. They have also garnered attention in the library world, through projects like the Microaggressions in Librarianship Tumblr, and a recent webinar on the subject put on by Library Leadership and Management Association (LLAMA). How do we create safe, affirming, …

Competing Standards In The Education Of School Librarians, Audrey Church, Gail Dickinson, Nancy Everhart, Jody Howard Jun 2015

Competing Standards In The Education Of School Librarians, Audrey Church, Gail Dickinson, Nancy Everhart, Jody Howard

Audrey P. Church

Education for school librarians traditionally blends elements from the fields of LIS and education. A thorough preparation in both professions is necessary since school librarians hold state teaching certification in K-12 library media. A variety of standards from professional organizations guide school librarians in performing their multi-faceted roles, and accordingly inform the curricula of school librarian preparation programs. However, the plethora of standards may actually make it more difficult to determine what standards to include in LIS curricula, and when to include them in educating future school librarians. The implications of competitive aspects of inclusion of each of these standards …

China's Global Growth In Social Science Research: Uncovering Evidence From Bibliometric Analyses Of Ssci Publications (1978–2013), Weishu Liu Jun 2015

China's Global Growth In Social Science Research: Uncovering Evidence From Bibliometric Analyses Of Ssci Publications (1978–2013), Weishu Liu

Weishu Liu

The phenomenon of China's rise as an emerging scientific power has been well documented, yet the development of its social science is less explored. Utilizing up-to-date Social Science Citation Index (SSCI) publication data (1978–2013), this paper probes the patterns and dynamics of China's social science research via bibliometric analyses. Our research indicates that despite the national orientation of social science research and the linguistic obstacle of publishing for an international audience, China's publications in the SSCI dataset have been rising in terms of volume, world share, and global ranking. But China is still not yet a major player in the …

The Academic Librarians' Guide To The Craft Of Writing Book Reviews, Brian Flota, Michael Mungin, Genya O'Gara, David Vess

Libraries

What is the art of writing a book review? Succinctly articulating a book’s main selling points, presenting a clear evaluation, and the occasional witty quip are just some of the many components in a reviewer’s bag of tricks. Finding venues to publish reviews (journals, review outlets, blogs) suited to your professional and individual areas of expertise also requires savvy. This presentation will demonstrate how book reviews can be effective tools for a librarian’s collection efforts, an avenue of exposure for one’s library, and a vital artistic and creative outlet in a profession that doesn’t always allow time for those pursuits.

Social Media As Game Strategy: Twitter In The #Infolit Instruction Session, Kelly M. Blanchat, Lydia Willoughby

Publications and Research

The lure of distractions can entice even the strongest of student wills in a computer classroom. Research requires strategic thinking and ordered planning to drown out the noise of online distractions. This poster demonstrates a unique way to capitalize on the natural overlap of research, communication, and social media by employing game strategy to lead learning outcomes for undergraduate student research. Instead of silencing social media, this activity incorporates Twitter as a platform to introduce information literacy concepts and participatory practices of scholarship.

Musical Similarity As Conceived By "Avid Recreational Music Listeners", Jason R. Neal Jun 2015

Musical Similarity As Conceived By "Avid Recreational Music Listeners", Jason R. Neal

Jason R. Neal

Over the past century, sociocultural and technological developments have fostered the emergence of what Peterson and Kern (1996) call “omnivorous” music listeners, as well as non-hierarchical forms of categorization like tagging. Despite such trends, genre remains the primary basis for ascertaining similarity in systems with musical content, metadata, or both. Furthermore, techniques employed within many recommender systems indirectly continue to reflect genre-based categorization and taste. This paper will provide an overview of the contexts in which such trends and tensions have emerged. It will also consider prospects for incorporating more actively nuanced dimensions of similarity into recommender systems, which could …

“Quantitative, Quantitative, Quantitative!” Is Qualitative Research The Jan Brady Of Social Sciences Data Services?, Mandy J. Swygart-Hobaugh M.L.S., Ph.D.

Mandy (Amanda) Swygart-Hobaugh

Librarians providing data services for researchers and learners in the social sciences should be offering data support and management services to qualitative researchers as well as quantitative ones. But, is this the case in practice? Do social sciences data services librarians devote their primary attention to quantitative researchers to the detriment of qualitative researchers? Is qualitative research the Jan Brady of social sciences data services? This presentation presented findings from: (1) a content analysis of IASSIST job repository postings from 2005-2014, …

Diy History: Building Digital Connections Between Collections And Courses, Thomas M. Keegan, Matthew Gilchrist, Paul A. Soderdahl

Paul A Soderdahl

In 2011 the University of Iowa Libraries began crowdsourcing the digital transcription of its manuscript archives. Four years and over 50,000 transcribed pages later, that project, known as DIY History, has garnered considerable internet attention via Buzzfeed, Twitter, Tumblr, and the NBC News blog. At the same time, it has been threaded into undergraduate classrooms at Iowa as a means of introducing students to primary source research, information literacy, and multimodal design.
