What Enables Size-Selective Trophy Hunting Of Wildlife?, Chris T. Darimont, K. Rosie Child Aug 2014

What Enables Size-Selective Trophy Hunting Of Wildlife?, Chris T. Darimont, K. Rosie Child

Big-Game and Trophy Hunting Collection

Although rarely considered predators, wildlife hunters can function as important ecological and evolutionary agents. In part, their influence relates to targeting of large reproductive adults within prey populations. Despite known impacts of sizeselective harvests, however, we know little about what enables hunters to kill these older, rarer, and presumably more wary individuals. In other mammalian predators, predatory performance varies with knowledge and physical condition, which accumulates and declines, respectively, with age. Moreover, some species evolved camouflage as a physical trait to aid in predatory performance. In this work, we tested whether knowledge-based faculty (use of a hunting guide with accumulated …

Improving Organizational Financial Outcomes Through Flexible Leadership, Mary Kay Copeland Aug 2014

Improving Organizational Financial Outcomes Through Flexible Leadership, Mary Kay Copeland

Business Faculty/Staff Publications

The importance of both managing and leading is not a new concept. What is lacking is how each is interrelated, what components of each are critical and what combination of leadership and management skills can lead to improved leader effectiveness and organizational financial performance. The Flexible Leadership Theory (FLT) posits that key executives that are flexible leaders are: (a) more effective leaders and (b) able to strategically lead their organizations to achieve greater financial outcomes (Yukl, 2005, 2008). To date, a measurement tool to assess a leader’s propensity to be a flexible leader has not been developed and validated. This …

Do Women Generate Better Returns?, Steven D. Dolvin Aug 2014

Do Women Generate Better Returns?, Steven D. Dolvin

All Chapters

Some prior research suggests that women make for better investors, primarily because they generally trade less than men (meaning lower transaction costs). However, a new fund aims to exploit the benefit women may provide as board members. The Barclays Women in Leadership ETN will invest in companies with a female CEO or a board that has a membership of at least 25% women. See here for an article that discusses the new fund (WSJ).

See previous post (ETFs vs. ETNs) for a discussion of the fund structure.

Time To Sell?, Steven D. Dolvin Aug 2014

Time To Sell?, Steven D. Dolvin

All Chapters

For technical traders, it may be time to sell. While the market has yet to make a "death cross," some other indicators are saying sell. In particular, a recent WSJ article identified three signals that recently occurred in tandem: overvaluation based on earnings multiples, extreme divergence in sector performance, and excessive levels of bullish enthusiasm. This combination has occurred six times since 1970, with each event resulting in market drops of at least 22%. Will this happen again?

A Research Framework For Measuring Multiple Bottom Lines, Mary Kay Copeland Aug 2014

A Research Framework For Measuring Multiple Bottom Lines, Mary Kay Copeland

Business Faculty/Staff Publications

This paper presents a proposed framework for measuring multiple bottom lines (MBLs). MBL is a term that describes a company’s desire to not only measure its financial bottom line, but additionally create measures for important, non-financial initiatives and outcomes. The MBL concept evolved as corporate citizenship advocates argued that simply measuring a entity’s bottom line to determine whether the company was successful was not sufficient. Corporate Social Responsibility advocates argued that to truly measure a company’s achievements, the full impact of their efforts on society and the environment also needed to be computed. It was argued that each area of …

State And Local Anti-Predatory Lending Laws: The Effect Of Legal Enforcement Mechanisms, Raphael W. Bostic, Kathleen C. Engel, Patricia A. Mccoy, Anthony Pennington-Cross, Susan M. Wachter Aug 2014

State And Local Anti-Predatory Lending Laws: The Effect Of Legal Enforcement Mechanisms, Raphael W. Bostic, Kathleen C. Engel, Patricia A. Mccoy, Anthony Pennington-Cross, Susan M. Wachter

Patricia A. McCoy

Subprime mortgage lending has grown rapidly in recent years and with it, so have concerns about predatory lending. In response to evidence of predatory lending, most states have enacted new laws or expanded existing laws to address abuses in the subprime home loan market. The effect of these statutes is a matter of debate. This paper seeks to improve the understanding of this increasingly important issue and pays particular attention to the role that legal enforcement mechanisms play in this context. The results of the analysis are consistent with the view that anti-predatory lending laws influence subprime lending markets and …

Front Line Hospitality Leaders: Knowledge, Knowledge Acquisition, And Ability To Effectively Lead, Gregory Scott Krawiec Aug 2014

Front Line Hospitality Leaders: Knowledge, Knowledge Acquisition, And Ability To Effectively Lead, Gregory Scott Krawiec

Gregory Scott Krawiec

The successful practice of leadership involves a considerable amount of time, effort, and knowledge. The hospitality industry is service intensive and requires leadership effectiveness. Understanding the front line leader's knowledge and its source, ability to apply the knowledge, and time allotted in the work environment to utilize this knowledge is of great importance to future hospitality leadership research. Although leaders exhibited negligible knowledge about leadership and indicated very little familiarity with leadership theory and concepts, all communicated standard thoughts about leadership traits and characteristics. However, hospitality leaders do not model the behaviors and skills they list as being characteristic of …

It is estimated that the closure will result in the total loss of 475 jobs, $72.7 million of sales, and $24.6 million of labor income in Stearns and Benton counties. In addition to the direct loss of jobs in the printing industry, the industries of food …

Re-Entry And Disorientation, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

I have been out of the country for less than three weeks and it is mid-summer when not much happens of note. The first thing I confronted on returning was a total reorganization of the local supermarket. Under the influence of jet lag I found this quite disorienting. As it turned out, this was only one of many changes that faced me.

Selecting The Best Supply Chain Strategy: When Is A Misalignment Of Product Type And Strategy Appropriate, How Do Changes In Expected Demand Impact Strategies, And Should The Strategy Of A Product Change Over Its Life-Cycle?, William Ellegood Aug 2014

Selecting The Best Supply Chain Strategy: When Is A Misalignment Of Product Type And Strategy Appropriate, How Do Changes In Expected Demand Impact Strategies, And Should The Strategy Of A Product Change Over Its Life-Cycle?, William Ellegood

Dissertations

To reduce the total cost of delivering a product to the marketplace, many firms are going beyond the walls of their organization and working with suppliers and customers to implement supply chain management (SCM). Fisher (1997) presented a conceptual model contending that the demand characteristics and supply chain strategy (SCS) of a product should be aligned for SCM to be successful. This dissertation presents an original analytical model of a three echelon supply chain to demonstrate under various supply chain conditions that a “misalignment” between demand characteristics and SCS can result in a lower total supply chain cost. In addition …

Public Good Economics And Standard Essential Patents, Christopher S. Yoo Aug 2014

Public Good Economics And Standard Essential Patents, Christopher S. Yoo

All Faculty Scholarship

Standard essential patents have emerged as a major focus in both the public policy and academic arenas. The primary concern is that once a patented technology has been incorporated into a standard, the standard can effectively insulate it from competition from substitute technologies. To guard against the appropriation of quasi-rents that are the product of the standard setting process rather than the innovation itself, standard setting organizations (SSOs) require patentholders to disclose their relevant intellectual property before the standard has been adopted and to commit to license those rights on terms that are fair, reasonable, and non-discriminatory (FRAND).

To date …

Practitioner Profile: An Interview With Reeta Wolfsohn, Cmsw, Reeta Wolfsohn

Journal of Financial Therapy

Reeta Wolfsohn, CMSW, began practicing financial therapy in 1997. At the time, she didn’t call what she did by that name, but her work specifically addressed the financial issues and problems of her clients. Early on in her work, Reeta recognized clients wanted to take control of their money and their lives, but struggled not only with the shame, guilt, worry, and stress of debt, but also with the poor sense of self, and low self-confidence and self-esteem which inevitably accompanied it. Realizing clients needed more help than regularly scheduled therapy sessions, she began developing financial educational materials and psychosocial …
