Utility Analysis For Multiple Selection Devices And Multiple Outcomes, Michael C. Sturman Dec 2000

Utility Analysis For Multiple Selection Devices And Multiple Outcomes, Michael C. Sturman

Articles and Chapters

Traditional utility analysis only calculates the value of a given selection procedure over random selection. This assumption is not only an inaccurate representation of staffing policy but also leads to overestimates of a device’s value. This paper presents a more accurate method for computing the validity of a selection battery for when there are multiple selection devices and multiple criteria. Application of the method is illustrated using previous utility analysis work and an actual case of administrative assistants with eight predictors and nine criteria. A final example also is provided that includes these advancements as well as other researchers ...

Return Migration As An Individual's Optimal Utility Maximizing Behavior, Yang Li, Wallace E. Huffman

Economic Staff Paper Series

The paper presents a model of location behavior of a multi-period finite-life utility maximizing individual who consumes leisure, purchased goods, and local amenities and is retired in the final period of life and empirical evidence from a hazard rate analysis using micro-data on return migration for ^erto Rican bom males who worked in the United States during the 1980s. An individual is modeled as considers staying in his home country or migrating to a host country. We show that it is optimal to migrate in the first period or to stay at in the home country. Given that migration occurs ...

Celebrating Medicrity At The Bowls, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

Well, you could have bowled me over with a feather, or perhaps a dot com, when I learned today that four bowl games had already been played. Not exactly stellar match- ups, but bowl games nonetheless. And say what you will; a bowl game is still a bowl game.

Shaq, Lsu, The Degree V. Education, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

Over the past several days much has been written about the graduation of Shaquille O'Neal from Louisiana State University. Indeed the event has been the butt of many jokes, one of which Shaq generated himself when he told people he was working on his degree at Learn Slow University. He now says that LSU means Love Shaq University.

Money And Baseball: The Salaries Keep Rising, Richard C. Crepeau Dec 2000

Money And Baseball: The Salaries Keep Rising, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

It was the late Senator Everett McKinley Dirksen of Illinois who once said, "a billion here, a billion there, pretty soon were talking about real money." This quaint observation came to mind over the past few days in baseball as it was "a few million here, a few million there." One wonders if we are now talking about real money.

The Significance Of The Kicker In American And European Football, Richard C. Crepeau Dec 2000

The Significance Of The Kicker In American And European Football, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

One of the primary objectives in sport is to win. In American sport winning is too often the only thing. Coaches spend sixteen to eighteen-hour days in seven-day weeks searching for all those little keys to victory that are necessary to success. Owners too spend time, energy and especially dollars in the great quest for the glory that comes with winning.

Baseball's Rising Salaries - Bud Lite At Congressional Hearing, Richard C. Crepeau Dec 2000

Baseball's Rising Salaries - Bud Lite At Congressional Hearing, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

This past week Mike Mussina signed with the New York Yankees for $88.5M over six-year period with $12M of that a signing bonus to be spread over the contract at $2M per year. Next year Mussina will make $10M pitching for the Yankees. Considered by many to be one of the best pitchers in all of baseball, Mussina gives the Yankees a formidable starting rotation, and this has already led some to concede next year's World Championship to them. This might be a bit premature for early December but it is difficult to deny that they are the ...

Will Succession Planning At The Department Of Energy/Nevada Succeed?, James H. Winget Dec 2000

Will Succession Planning At The Department Of Energy/Nevada Succeed?, James H. Winget

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The topic of this professional paper is the succession planning program at the Department of Energy Nevada Operations Office (DOE/NV). I have prepared this paper for the Department of Public Administration in partial fulfillment of a Masters of Public Administration degree. The paper centers on the interpretation of data that was received through an office-wide survey of the staff and leaders of the DOE/NV. The data presented supports the theory that there may be significant weaknesses found in the current structure of the succession planning that may directly affect whether or not the program will succeed. The analyses ...

The Role Of Institutional And Market Forces In Divergent Organizational Change, Thomas D'Aunno, Melissa Succi, Jeffrey A. Alexander Dec 2000

The Role Of Institutional And Market Forces In Divergent Organizational Change, Thomas D'Aunno, Melissa Succi, Jeffrey A. Alexander

Business Faculty Articles and Research

This paper focuses on a radical change, in which organizations abandon an institutionalized template for arranging their core activities, that is likely to occur in organizational fields that have strong, local market forces and strong but heterogeneous institutional forces. We examine the role of market forces and heterogeneous institutional elements in promoting divergent change in core activities among all U.S. rural hospitals from 1984 to 1991. Results support the view that divergent change depends on both market forces (proximity to competitors, disadvantages in service mix) and institutional forces (state regulation, ownership and governance norms, and mimicry of models of ...

[Review Of The Book Environmental Regulations And Corporate Strategy: A Nafta Perspective], Lance A. Compa Dec 2000

[Review Of The Book Environmental Regulations And Corporate Strategy: A Nafta Perspective], Lance A. Compa

Articles and Chapters

[Excerpt] What can proponents of liberalized international trade do about barriers to trade erected in the name of environmental protection? What can corporate strategists do to expand their firms' trade opportunities in new institutional frameworks linking trade and environmental protection? The Canadian authors of Environmental Regulations and Corporate Strategy address these questions from backgrounds in management studies, economics, political science, international relations, and law. Drawing on each discipline, they set out an ambitious goal: "a new and unified model" for corporate strategy and public policy that reconciles trade promotion and environmental concerns.

How Restaurant Features Affect Check Averages: A Study Of The Toronto Restaurant Market, Alex M. Susskind, Edwin K. Chan Dec 2000

How Restaurant Features Affect Check Averages: A Study Of The Toronto Restaurant Market, Alex M. Susskind, Edwin K. Chan

Articles and Chapters

[Excerpt] Full-service restaurants are under more pressure than ever, in part because the restaurant business has seen strong growth in the home-meal- replacement concept in recent years. Given the tumultuous competition in the restaurant business, we examined the underlying determinants or drivers of a successful full-service restaurant operation. In particular, we wanted to discover what restaurant attributes improve customers’ ratings of a restaurant and, more to the point, boosted check averages.

This investigation focused on three specific questions: (1) What restaurant features matter the most to consumers in their dining experiences?, (2) What does it take to be the ...

Same-Sex Sexual Harassment: How The "Equal Opportunity Harasser" Became A Legitimate Defense, David Sherwyn, Ezekiel A. Kaufman, Adam A. Klausner Dec 2000

Same-Sex Sexual Harassment: How The "Equal Opportunity Harasser" Became A Legitimate Defense, David Sherwyn, Ezekiel A. Kaufman, Adam A. Klausner

Articles and Chapters

This article provides a quick history of sexual-harassment law and looks at the appellate-court opinions that came before the U.S. Supreme Court ruling in a same-sex sexual-harassment case. That latter decision has given rise to the relatively novel equal-opportunity-harasser defense, whereby harassing conduct directed at both men and women, no matter how outrageous, may not be unlawful at all. The reason is that the Supreme Court previously established that sexual harassment must be "because of sex," and failure to prove that gender-related component will automatically disqualify claims for quid pro quo or hostile-work-environment sexual harassment, as indicated by the ...

Assessing The Proposed Iam, Uaw, And Usw Merger: Critical Issues And Potential Outcomes, Paul F. Clark, Lois Spier Gray Dec 2000

Assessing The Proposed Iam, Uaw, And Usw Merger: Critical Issues And Potential Outcomes, Paul F. Clark, Lois Spier Gray

Articles and Chapters

[Excerpt] We examine the many difficult issues facing the IAM, UAW, and USW as they move toward the creation of a single organization. In order to place this merger in con- text, the larger issue of mergers in the American labor movement will be addressed, as will the origins and history of each of the three unions. The specific issues confronting the unions will be examined in three categories — structure, administration, and functions and services. We conclude with an assessment of the current status of the unification effort and the prospects for its realization.

Preliminary Assessment Of Client Interest In And Needs Of The New England Environmental Finance Center, New England Environmental Finance Center, University Of Southern Maine Dec 2000

Preliminary Assessment Of Client Interest In And Needs Of The New England Environmental Finance Center, New England Environmental Finance Center, University Of Southern Maine

Planning

The New England Environmental Finance Center (NE/EFC) has been conceived as a knowledge-based clearinghouse, training, and change-agent program aimed at helping EPA's constituencies find financially successful approaches to environmental improvements. The NE/EFC will develop approaches to needs of particular priority in New England and potentially useful throughout the nation; share such approaches through the EFC national network; and help make tools from that network accessible throughout New England. In 1999 we began exploring with potential users how this ninth of the nation's EFCs might best address the region's needs. The assessment continued through the Muskie ...

An Exploratory Study Of Michigan Grantmaker Attributes And Competencies, Lisa R. Wyatt Knowlton Dec 2000

An Exploratory Study Of Michigan Grantmaker Attributes And Competencies, Lisa R. Wyatt Knowlton

Dissertations

Foundation trustees and professional staff are giving greater attention to issues of accountability and return on investment, while voices of those with significant experience in the private sector inquire with increasing frequency and vigor about the organizational performance of foundations. For these reasons there must be renewed attention on the competencies and attributes of grantmaking practitioners. This study is a self-assessment by grantmakers based on the construct of Emotional Intelligence (Goleman, 1995) as well as competency studies in organizational management and leadership.

In association with the Council of Michigan Foundations, grantmakers associated with foundations holding in excess of $1 million ...
