Implementing Information Systems With Stakeholder Analysis: A Case Study, Michael D. Myers Dec 1993

Implementing Information Systems With Stakeholder Analysis: A Case Study, Michael D. Myers

Journal of International Information Management

Despite the proliferation of information technology, the implementation of information systems remains problematic. While some organizations have been successful in implementing information systems, many systems fail to live up to expectations and some end up as disasters. This article describes how stakeholder analysis was used in the successful implementation of a decision support system in the Nev/ Zealand army. The system gives legal advice to New Zealand Army commanders about the laws of armed conflict.

Bowl Mania And Naming Rights, Richard C. Crepeau Dec 1993

Bowl Mania And Naming Rights, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

Amidst the incessant whining and babbling about who is number one, comes the endless parade of bowl games, in which millions of dollars are spent on advertising, game production, and team payouts. This is matched in the realm of conspicuous waste by the binge of spending indulged in by participating institutions of higher learning to entertain boosters, legislators, and assorted hangers-on who haunt the halls of athletic departments. FSU dropped three-quarters of a million dollars on one recent trip.

As I mentioned last week, sports books are often considered to be the perfect last minute Christmas gift, and as promised, today I will offer several suggestions of sports books as gifts to add to last week's baseball book list. For those hearing the evening broadcast these are literally last second suggestions.

Sports Books For Christmas, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

Every Christmas the sports book becomes one of those items that people resort to as a last minute gift. But the sports book can be a thoughtful and excellent gift for sports fans and for those who simply like good books and good writing. This week I am recommending nine books which come from a list of nominees for an award as baseball book of the year. Next week I'll recommend several non-baseball books.

Nfl Expands To Jacksonville - Bob Woolf Obit, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

The Jacksonville Jaguars are the newest entry into the major sports explosion in Florida, as Jacksonville was awarded an NFL franchise a little over a week ago. Jacksonville joins Charlotte as the latest cities to be anointed by the power brokers in the National Football League. For the privileged Jacksonville has already spent several million dollars to secure the franchise, and now ownership will pay out $140M in franchise rights, while the people of Jacksonville will donate $121M for renovation of the aging Gator Bowl. In addition the new franchise owners will receive only one-half their share of the television ...

A Feasibility Study Of A Private Entity Competing With Fbos For Airline Ground Handling Contracts, Carlos A. Vergas Dec 1993

A Feasibility Study Of A Private Entity Competing With Fbos For Airline Ground Handling Contracts, Carlos A. Vergas

Theses - Daytona Beach

This thesis investigates whether a private entity can compete with fixed base operators (FBOs) for airline ground handling contracts. Separating the research method into five phases, the author first conducts a need analysis. Then, the author dissects the structure of existing ground handling contracts. Thirdly, the average service charges presently in place are tabulated. Fourthly, a financial analysis is performed including the calculation of the break-even point at a profit. Finally, a model of ground handling operation is simulated using an existing air carrier’s ground handling contract.

Consumer Tipping: A Cross-Country Study, Michael Lynn, George M. Zinkhan, Judy Harris Dec 1993

Consumer Tipping: A Cross-Country Study, Michael Lynn, George M. Zinkhan, Judy Harris

Articles and Chapters

Tipping differs from most economic transactions in that consumers who tip are paying a nonobligatory amount for a service that has already been received. Academic research on this unique yet pervasive consumer behavior has focused on the determinants of individuals' tipping decisions. Little attention has been directed at macro-level issues such as cross-country differences in tipping practices and norms. This article addresses this deficiency by presenting and testing the theory that cross-country differences in the prevalence of tipping reflect cross-country differences in values. Results of the study generally support the theory.

Differentiation As A Basis For Explaining Customer Satisfaction Across Industries, Claes Fornell, Michael D. Johnson Dec 1993

Differentiation As A Basis For Explaining Customer Satisfaction Across Industries, Claes Fornell, Michael D. Johnson

Articles and Chapters

The paper uses the differentiation of offerings as a basis for explaining differences in aggregate, industry level customer satisfaction in the annual Swedish Customer Satisfaction Barometer. The results reveal that differentiated industries have higher aggregate levels of perceived performance and subsequent customer satisfaction, and that a large portion of variance in customer satisfaction across industries can be explained by the impact of differentiation (via perceived performance). These findings suggest that it is indeed possible to make meaningful comparisons of customer satisfaction across different industries.

A Theological Context Of Work From The Catholic Social Encyclical Tradition, Michael John Naughton, Gene R. Laczniak Dec 1993

A Theological Context Of Work From The Catholic Social Encyclical Tradition, Michael John Naughton, Gene R. Laczniak

Marketing Faculty Research and Publications

This article draws upon 100 years of writings which are referred to as the Catholic Social Tradition (CST). Using this tradition as a guide, the nature of work is explored along with the principles and virtues which vitalize the deepest dimension of work — how it affects the dignity of the human person. It develops five operational ethical principles which can be applied to questions of workplace ethics. Organizational policies and programs that seem consistent with CST are also discussed.

Michael Naughton is Assistant Professor of Management and Theology at the University of St. Thomas (MN). Dr. Naughton's major research ...

The Net Result: Enthusiasm For Exploring The Internet, Connie Foster, Cynthia Etkin, Sandra L. Staebell, Mary Margaret (Peggy) Wright

DLTS Faculty Publications

What began as a vision and committee charge from the dean of libraries at Western Kentucky University (WKU) ended as a successful faculty retreat focusing on the Internet. For the third year all University Libraries faculty from public and technical services, special collections, and the Kentucky Museum set aside one day before the beginning of the fall semester to retreat from their normal library responsibilities and environment to explore, in-depth, a single topic, and in 1993 the retreat focused on the Internet.
