Variational Inequalities For Marketable Pollution Permits With Technological Investment Opportunities: The Case Of Oligopolistic Markets, Anna Nagurney, Kathy Dhanda Sep 2012

Variational Inequalities For Marketable Pollution Permits With Technological Investment Opportunities: The Case Of Oligopolistic Markets, Anna Nagurney, Kathy Dhanda

Kathy K Dhanda

In this paper, we develop a variational inequality framework for the modeling, qualitative analysis, and computation of equilibrium patterns in multiproduct, multipollutant oligopolistic markets with marketable pollution permits along with opportunities for investment in production technology and/or emission-abatement technology. The model deals explicitly with spatial differentiation and also guarantees that the imposed environmental standards are met through the initial allocation of licenses. An algorithm is proposed, with convergence results, to compute the profitmaximized quantities of oligopolistic firms' products and the quantities of emissions, along with the equilibrium allocation of licenses and their prices, as well as the optimal investments ...

Applications Of Internet Technology For Requirements Elicitation, Deepak Pandit Dec 1997

Applications Of Internet Technology For Requirements Elicitation, Deepak Pandit

Theses

During the Requirements Elicitation part of a project various stakeholders need to be able to communicate their requirements to the developers, and the developers need to be able communicate their understanding back to the stakeholders. Communication between the various members of the project is the key factor during the Requirements Elicitation part of a project. Easing communications between stakeholders and developers makes the process of eliciting requirement easier, leading to better requirements specification and eventually a better product.

The Requirements Elicitation Process through Internet (REPI) web site has been designed and implemented to explore this idea. The prototype version of ...

Analysis Of Senior-Subordinated Structures Backed By Private-Label Mortgages, Jarl Kallberg, Crocker H. Liu, A. R. Radhakrishnan

Working Papers

This paper does a valuation analysis of senior-subordinated struc ture tranches backed by non-agency mortgages. The valuation is done using Monte Carlo simulation and employs the CIR interest rate process in conjunction with an empirical model estimated for non-agency mortgage prepayments and defaults. The sensitivity of the value of tranches to a number of variables are analyzed. We find that the interest rate process parameters significantly affect prepayments and defaults but not the relative value of the senior tranche. It is found that with the shifting o f prepayments, the senior tranche does not dominate all the junior tranches at ...

Industrial Relations In The U.S. Automobile Industry: An Illustration Of Increased Decentralization And Diversity, Harry C. Katz

Faculty Publications - Labor Relations, Law, and History

"This paper traces the evolution of employment relations in the U.S. auto industry over the post World War II period with particular emphasis on recent developments. There is a strong movement toward growing variation in employment relations within both the assembly and parts sectors of the auto industry. Variation appears both through the spread of more contingent compensation and team systems of work organization. There is also wide variety across plants and industry segments in basic employment systems including low wage, human resource, Japanese-oriented, and joint team-based approaches. Declining unionization is a particularly strong influence in the parts sector ...

Using Auctions To Divest Generation Assets, Peter Cramton, Lisa J. Cameron, Robert Wilson Dec 1997

Using Auctions To Divest Generation Assets, Peter Cramton, Lisa J. Cameron, Robert Wilson

Peter Cramton

In most states, ratepayers will compensate utilities for their stranded costs. As a result, these costs must be measured as accurately as possible, in a manner that is easily understood by all concerned parties. We describe the options for measuring stranded costs and argue that a simultaneous ascending auction is the best approach.

Symposium On Employment Relations Reform In The World Automobile Industry: Introduction, Russell D. Lansbury, Harry C. Katz, Fun-Koo Park

Articles and Chapters

"The international automobile industry provides a useful basis for examining the degree and nature of change in employment relations under a variety of external conditions. By studying auto firms in various economies, it can be observed how employee relations strategies related to overall governance of the firm, to industry-level structures and institutions, and to the macro-economic and political institutions. These broader institutional arrangements in industrial relations may have a significant effect on how well the industry operates in both the domestic and international marketplace."

Technical Default, Auditors' Decisions And Future Financial Distress, Michael S. Wilkins Dec 1997

Technical Default, Auditors' Decisions And Future Financial Distress, Michael S. Wilkins

School of Business Faculty Research

A study was conducted to examine auditors' responses to first-time debt covenant violations and to assess whether these responses can be employed to forecast financial distress. Data were drawn from a sample of 159 companies traded on the NYSE/AMEX or NASDAQ that had initial default dates ranging from 1978 to 1988. The findings reveal that auditors are more likely to need debt reclassification when the violations are not waived by lenders. However, the waiver decision does not seem to significantly affect the auditor's qualification decision. For companies experiencing technical default, the audit option is an important determinant of ...

Employee Attitudinal Effects Of Perceived Performance Appraisal Use, Wendy R. Boswell, John W. Boudreau Dec 1997

Employee Attitudinal Effects Of Perceived Performance Appraisal Use, Wendy R. Boswell, John W. Boudreau

CAHRS Working Paper Series

This research investigates how employee perceptions of performance appraisal use relate to employee satisfaction with the performance appraisal and with the appraiser—the employees’ immediate supervisor. Employee perceptions that appraisals were used for development positively associated with both attitudinal variables, after controlling for justice perceptions, performance, and demographics. Perceptions of PA use for evaluation did not show a significant relationship with either employee attitude. Implications of these findings are discussed.

In At The Deep End: Conducting Processual Research On Organisational Change, Patrick M. Dawson

Faculty of Commerce - Papers (Archive)

This article provides a series of reflections on the practice of carrying out processual research on organisational change. At a broad level, some of the main tasks associated with conducting company case studies are described and the benefits of this approach for dealing with complex change data are outlined. At a more specific level, the article addresses three main areas tied to the actual ‘doing’ of processual research. First, the notion of tacit knowledge and ‘getting your hands dirty’ by engaging in ongoing in-depth fieldwork. Second, the design and implementation of a longitudinal case study research programme. Third, the advantages ...

Combining Multi-Attribute Utility And Geographic Information For Boundary Decisions: An Application To Park Planning, Jeffrey Keisler, Ronald Sundell Dec 1997

Combining Multi-Attribute Utility And Geographic Information For Boundary Decisions: An Application To Park Planning, Jeffrey Keisler, Ronald Sundell

Management Science and Information Systems Faculty Publication Series

The quality and value of an area depend primarily on what is found within its designated boundaries. To determine the value of such areas in terms of boundaries, we have developed a methodology for integrating multi-attribute utility functions with spatial analysis so that desirable, or appropriate, boundaries can be determined on the basis of the goals and objectives for the park. The key to successful evaluation is the development of measures for what decision makers value, rather than merely using what is easily measured. In a detailed example for planning of national parks, the fundamental objectives are conservation and societal ...

Agricultural Research: Benefits And Beneficiaries Of Alternative Funding Mechanism, Wallace E. Huffman, Richard E. Just

Economic Staff Paper Series

The United States has developed a very successful R&D system for agriculture. It is a system with shared cost/financing and performance by the federal and state governments and by the private sector. The paper presents an economic analysis of alternative organization, management, incentive, and funding mechanisms for agricultural research under budget constraints, including some emphasis on thekinds of benefits thatare generated and thegroups that receive them. We conclude that the private sector should bepermitted to carry outresearch that it finds profitable to undertake withminimal competition firom the public sector. Off-Farm Work Participation, Off-Farm Labor Supply And On-Farm Labor Demand Of U.S. Farm Operators, Wallace E. Huffman, Hisham El-Osta Dec 1997

Off-Farm Work Participation, Off-Farm Labor Supply And On-Farm Labor Demand Of U.S. Farm Operators, Wallace E. Huffman, Hisham El-Osta

Economic Staff Paper Series

An agricultural household model provides the framework for modeling off-farm work participation and off-farm and on-farm work decisions of farm operators. The empirical results are obtained from fitting the econometric model to data from a large national survey. In the estimated structural off-farm work participation equation, the operator's off-farm wage offer has a strong positive effect and other household income has a negative effect on the probability of off-farm work. For farm operators who participate in off-farm work, the wage elasticity of their off-farm labor supply is positive but of their on-farm labor demand is zero. The income elasticity ...
