Evaluating Competing Perspectives Towards Undeclared Work: Some Lessons From Bulgaria, Colin C. Williams Aug 2028

Evaluating Competing Perspectives Towards Undeclared Work: Some Lessons From Bulgaria, Colin C. Williams

Colin C Williams

When explaining and tackling the undeclared economy in Central
and Eastern Europe, participants have been conventionally viewed
as rational economic actors. They engage in undeclared work
when the benefits outweigh the costs. Participation is thus
deterred by increasing the sanctions and/or probability of being
caught. Recently, however, an alternative social actor approach
has emerged which views participants as engaging in undeclared
work when their norms, values and beliefs (i.e. citizen morale) do
not align with laws and regulations (i.e. state morale). Here, therefore,
initiatives to develop greater symmetry between civic and
state morale are pursued. To evaluate ...

Tannery Restaurant Townhouse Cookery School, Tannery

Menus of the 21st Century

Since Paul and Máire Flynn opened The Tannery in 1997, it has become one of the most original and welcoming experiences in Irish food. What makes it special? There is Paul’s cooking, of course – his fresh Waterford produce, ever-changing menus and mouth-watering focus on flavour. There are cosy chats in the wine bar, warm and welcoming service from expert staff, a bright and buzzy atmosphere at the tables. There is our unique location in the seaside town of Dungarvan, a stone’s throw from the Copper Coast and Comeragh Mountains. But most of all, there is the Tannery’s ...

Ceo Equity Risk Bearing And Strategic Risk Taking: The Moderating Effect Of Ceo Personality, Mirko Benishke, Geoffrey P. Martin Dr, Lotte Glaser Nov 2019

Ceo Equity Risk Bearing And Strategic Risk Taking: The Moderating Effect Of Ceo Personality, Mirko Benishke, Geoffrey P. Martin Dr, Lotte Glaser

Geoffrey P Martin

We draw upon applied psychology literature to explore inter-agent differences in perceived risk to their equity when making strategic risk decisions. Our theory suggests behavioral agency’s predicted negative relationship between equity risk bearing and strategic risk taking is contingent upon four personality traits. Our empirical analyses, based on personality profiles of 158 CEOs of S&P 1,500 firms in manufacturing industries, indicates the relationship between executive risk bearing and strategic risk taking crosses from negative to positive for high extraversion, greater openness and low conscientiousness. These findings demonstrate that agency based predictions of CEO risk taking in response ...

Why Intercollegiate Athletic Departments Should Embrace Alcohol Sales, Garrett J. Clark May 2019

Why Intercollegiate Athletic Departments Should Embrace Alcohol Sales, Garrett J. Clark

Health, Human Performance and Recreation Undergraduate Honors Theses

This thesis is guided by the theory of marketing myopia, the idea that an organizations should focus on single aspects like consumer needs and experiences in order to be successful. The sale of alcohol is becoming more and more common throughout collegiate athletics yet many schools are still missing out on the benefits that can come from embracing the tailgating culture of sports. This will examine the current literature surrounding the sale of alcohol at collegiate events, tailgating culture and what this all looks like in the real world. By examining schools and programs who currently offer the sale of ...

The Differential Impact Of Interactions Outside The Organization On Employee Well-Being, Devasheesh P. Bhave, Freyr Halldórsson, Eugene Kim, Alexandru M. Lefter

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

We examine two different perspectives of interactions outside the organization: the relational work design perspective and the emotional labour perspective. The relational work design perspective suggests that interactions outside the organization have favourable outcomes for employees, whereas the emotional labour perspective suggests that such interactions have adverse outcomes for employees. Our goal is to reconcile findings from these two research streams. In Study 1, using data from employees working in diverse occupations, we find that interactions outside the organization have a positive indirect effect on employee well‐being via task significance, and a negative indirect effect on employee well‐being ...

Schedule Creep – In Search Of An Uncongested Baseline Block Time By Examining Scheduled Flight Block Times Worldwide 1986–2016, Terence P. C. Fan

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Based on a stratified random sampling of airlines’ schedules for 200 heavily travelled directional nonstop airport pairs, this paper examines systematically how scheduled block times in non-stop flights have changed from 1986 to 2016. Three econometric analyses, by way of a 10th percentile quantile regression, 15th percentile quantile regression and ordinary least-squares regression, show that after accounting for the effects of air traffic growth, airport-specific congestion, flight delays, number of seat per flight, aircraft type, flight heading, airport slot policy, other airport-specific anomalies, airline-specific policies and changes in crude oil price, scheduled block times have been growing at a pace ...

Impact Of Conditional Job Offer On Applicant Reactions To Social Media In The Selection Process, Ashley Gomez Mar 2019

Impact Of Conditional Job Offer On Applicant Reactions To Social Media In The Selection Process, Ashley Gomez

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

Social media (SM) permits the sharing of personal information online, which can lead to employers accessing personal, non-job-related information about applicants throughout the selection process. Limited prior research (Jeske & Shultz, in press; Stoughton et al., 2015) has found that, to varying degrees, applicants find this access of their personal information to be an invasion of their personal privacy. The aim of the present study was to replicate prior findings regarding invasion of privacy moderating the relationship between SM screening presence and procedural justice perceptions and to expand on prior research by exploring whether the stage at which this information was collected (pre- and ...

Technology-Aided Meditation At Work: Evaluating The Impact Of Biofeedback On A Mindfulness Program In The Workplace, Charles Morris

Mindfulness Studies Theses

The rise of secular mindfulness has been buoyed in large part by scientific research into its benefits. The availability of consumer-grade biofeedback devices promises to bring the objectivity of results seen in a research lab to personal experience. This mixed methods study examined the experience of 12 participants in a workplace mindfulness program, comparing the experience of an experimental group whose meditation practice was supported with the use of a HeartMath™ Inner Balance device to a control group who learned to meditate without it. The effects on stress, focus and motivation were captured via questionnaire, along with biofeedback data and ...

Collaborative Quizzes – Applications in Introductory Level Accounting Courses by Wayne Singular, MBA, CPA, CMA, School of Business & Economics, Thompson Rivers University At Thompson Rivers University, two introductory level accounting courses are mandatory requirements for all students in the Bachelor of Business Administration (“BBA”) Accounting program. In these courses, pre-exam review classes are often very repetitive, challenging to maintain student engagement and often it is difficult to determine the exact needs of preparing students for an upcoming individual exam. Over the last several years, I have introduced a series of low-grade percentage collaborative quizzes to improve participation and engagement during these ...

Snapshot And Trends In The Production And Overseas Trade Of Fruits From Western Australia, Manju Radhakrishnan, Rohan Prince Feb 2019

Snapshot And Trends In The Production And Overseas Trade Of Fruits From Western Australia, Manju Radhakrishnan, Rohan Prince

Bulletins 4000 -

Western Australia produced 129 046 tonnes of fruit in 2015–16, worth $477 million. This was a 62% increase in the value of the industry in a five-year period, driven by strong growth in sales to eastern states and overseas markets. Production expansion in the fruit industry is being led by continued growth of the avocado sector, which was worth an estimated $193m in 2015–16 and now accounts for just over 40% of WA’s total fruit production value. Increased production, WA consumption and demand from the eastern states have led to a 780% increase in the value of ...

Students in scientific/technical-oriented disciplines struggle with achieving good levels of innovation when exposed to design problems. Research indicates the need for implementing alternative pedagogical approaches in technical curricula that enhance students’ creative skills. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the implementation of a cross-disciplinary pedagogical approach with a focus on teaching innovation in the field of packaging engineering at a university in the United States. A Design Thinking Project-Based Learning (DTPBL) approach was used to improve the levels of innovation in student work. Its outcomes were compared with those of a Traditional Project-Based Learning (TPBL) approach. The ...

1 Behavioral Agency And Affect.Docx, Geoffrey P. Martin Dr, Leon Zolotoy, Don O'Sullivan

Geoffrey P Martin

We advance behavioral agency theory by exploring the influence of mood or “affect” on the behavioral consequences of equity incentives. Drawing on insights from psychology and behavioral decision theory, we describe how affect influences agent risk behavior. We argue that positive affect amplifies both the extent to which executives reduce strategic risk taking in response to risk bearing and engage in strategic risk taking in response to incentives for further enrichment. Building again on the psychology literature, we describe how CEO accountability attenuates the influence of affect on CEO risk behavior in response to equity incentives. We test our expectations ...

Relieving Library Anxiety: The Application Of Relationship Marketing To Libraries, Cynthia Schmidt, Joshua Waltman Feb 2019

Relieving Library Anxiety: The Application Of Relationship Marketing To Libraries, Cynthia Schmidt, Joshua Waltman

Cynthia Schmidt

Library marketing has traditionally been transactionally focused. Our library has chosen to embrace a relationship marketing (RM) approach by focusing on long-term relationships rather than isolated interactions. With the prevalence of library anxiety, there is a need to look outside of library literature for best practices. While libraries and businesses define success differently, the approaches used to achieve success can be based on the same theoretical framework. RM has been documented to positively impact a business’ profits, and libraries can potentially adapt these approaches to achieve organizational goals. Our library has implemented this approach in four areas of focus: customer ...

Dos And Don'ts Of Data Science, Ryan Burton

SDSU Data Science Symposium

In an ideal world, we avoid all mistakes in our work. Some mistakes are preventable and others are unavoidable. A few common mistakes in data science that can be minimized include assuming correlation implies causation, modeling with an unrepresentative sample, and focusing on the mean without understanding the distribution. This talk will give an overview of some of the simple yet common mistakes in data science and guidance on how to avoid them.

The full capabilities of well-structured project management are rarely realized outside of the scope of the respective profession. The tools and skills in which project managers specialize are furthermore often considered in high-level business contexts, but are far less remembered as crucial components to many other endeavors. This project portfolio serves as an insight into the structure and process of managing a short-term social awareness project and an exploration and application of various project management tools. Cyber Capability Planning And The Need For An Expanded Cybersecurity Workforce, Tony Coulson, Megan Mason, Vincent Nestler

Communications of the IIMA

Cybersecurity is a national concern for the United States, yet the cybersecurity workforce is currently understaffed. Military capability planning can be used as a framework to evaluate and establish cybersecurity workforce development models, such as the National Initiative for Cybersecurity Education (NICE) Framework. These models can be used in a way that provides the nation a methodology to enhance human resource capabilities and fill the cybersecurity workforce deficit. Furthermore, this report discusses the importance of establishing and enhancing strategic recruitment initiatives that can be utilized for building a cybersecurity pipeline.
