Safe And Effective Disinfection Of Show Cave Infrastructure In A Time Of Covid-19, Hazel A. Barton

International Journal of Speleology

The COVID-19 pandemic, caused by the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2, has been responsible for over 650,000 deaths worldwide. Transmission of SARS-CoV-2 occurs primarily through airborne transmission or direct human contact, demonstrating the importance of social distancing measures and the use of face masks to prevent infection. Nonetheless, the persistence of coronavirus on surfaces means that disinfection is important to limit the possibility of contact transmission. In this paper, the potential for various surfaces in show caves to serve as sources for SARS-CoV-2 infection is examined. Given the isoelectric potential (pI) of SARS and SARS-like coronaviruses, it is likely that they are …

Reducing The Rate Of Falls In Hospice Patients: A Fall Prevention Pilot Program, Allison Floyd 2020 University of San Diego

Reducing The Rate Of Falls In Hospice Patients: A Fall Prevention Pilot Program, Allison Floyd

Doctor of Nursing Practice Final Manuscripts

Background and Evidence Problem: As the population ages, there is an increase in the incidents of falls. Falls are the predominant cause of both nonfatal and fatal injuries among adults aged 65 years and older (Bergen et al., 2016). Extensive research has been conducted in fall prevention in hospitals, skilled nursing, and rehabilitation units. End-of-life care in a hospice setting presents a greater challenge in risk identification and prevention of falls. A local hospice had 457 falls between July 2018 to mid-March 2019 with a lack of consistent, detailed, fall education and documentation.

Evidence-Based Practice Intervention: Utilizing the American Geriatrics …

Orthostatic Blood Pressure And Arterial Stiffness In Persons With Spinal Cord Injury: The Effect Of The Renin Angiotensin Aldosterone System, Caitlyn G. Katzelnick 2020 Seton Hall University

Orthostatic Blood Pressure And Arterial Stiffness In Persons With Spinal Cord Injury: The Effect Of The Renin Angiotensin Aldosterone System, Caitlyn G. Katzelnick

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

With advances in acute medical care, longevity has increased in persons with SCI; however, morbidity due to cardiovascular disease (CVD) occurs at an earlier age compared to the general population. Arterial stiffness (AS) is recognized as an independent risk factor for CVD and, specifically, pulse wave velocity (PWV) has been proven to be a valid tool to predict and track structural arterial changes that reflect arteriosclerosis. Evidence has shown that persons with SCI have increased AS compared to uninjured able-bodied controls; however, possible contributors to this increase are not yet fully understood. After a SCI, sympathetic control in the regions …

Screening And Characterization Of A Pan-Gtpase Inhibitor, Leyla Akhadov 2020 University of New Mexico - Main Campus

Screening And Characterization Of A Pan-Gtpase Inhibitor, Leyla Akhadov

Biomedical Engineering ETDs

Abnormal functioning of small GTPases is implicated in a variety of diseases, ranging from neurological and developmental diseases to cancer. In fact, mutant GTPases are found in up to 30% of cancers. Thus, small GTPases are a highly relevant target in drug discovery and development. High-throughput targeted screening of small molecules is the most productive method of discovering compounds that can give insights into drug development. This thesis describes improvements made to a high-throughput GTPase-targeted screening method to minimize confounding systematic error. It also describes the follow-up characterization of a compound that was identified in a high-throughput screen. The compound …

Implementation Of A Computer-Vision System As A Supportive Diagnostic Tool For Parkinson’S Disease, Diego Machado Reyes 2020 University of Mississippi

Implementation Of A Computer-Vision System As A Supportive Diagnostic Tool For Parkinson’S Disease, Diego Machado Reyes

Honors Theses

Parkinson’s disease is the second most common neurodegenerative disorder, affecting nearly 1 million people in the US and it is predicted that the number will keep increasing. Parkinson’s disease is difficult to diagnose due to its similarity with other diseases that share the parkinsonian symptoms and the subjectivity of its assessment, thus increasing the probabilities of misdiagnosis. Therefore, it is relevant to develop diagnostic tools that are quantitatively based and monitoring tools to improve the patient’s quality of life. Computer-based assessment systems have shown to be successful in this field through diverse approaches that can be classified into two main …

McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations

Electronic Health Records (EHR) are widely adopted and used throughout healthcare systems and are able to collect and store longitudinal information data that can be used to describe patient phenotypes. From the underlying data structures used in the EHR, discrete data can be extracted and analyzed to improve patient care and outcomes via tasks such as risk stratification and prospective disease management. Temporality in EHR is innately present given the nature of these data, however, and traditional classification models are limited in this context by the cross- sectional nature of training and prediction processes. Finding temporal patterns in EHR is …
