Optimising Non-Cycloplegic Screening Strategies For Early Detection Of Pre-Myopia And Myopia In Young Children, Síofra Harrington, Michael Moore, James Loughman, Ian Flitcroft, Veronica O'Dwyer

Articles

Purpose: Early detection of myopia is essential to delay its onset and progression. Pre-myopia, defined by an inadequate hyperopic reserve, increases myopia risk in childhood. However, effective screening methods remain limited. This study aimed to develop practical non-cycloplegic screening methods for pre-myopia and myopia in 6- to 7-year-olds to support earlier interventions.

Methods: This cross-sectional study of 621 Irish schoolchildren (mean age: 7.12 ± 0.45 years; 51.8% boys) assessed uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA). Cycloplegic spherical equivalent refraction (SER) classified refractive status (myopia: SER ≤ −0.50D; pre-myopia: SER > −0.50 ≤ 0.75D). Pre- and post-cycloplegic SER were measured using the Welch …

The eye provides novel insights into general health, as well as pathogenesis and development of systemic diseases. In the past decade, growing evidence has demonstrated that the eye's structure and function mirror multiple systemic health conditions, especially in cardiovascular diseases, neurodegenerative disorders, and kidney impairments. This has given rise to the field of oculomics-the application of ophthalmic biomarkers to understand mechanisms, detect and predict disease. The development of this field has been accelerated by three major advances: 1) the availability and widespread clinical adoption of high-resolution and non-invasive ophthalmic imaging ("hardware"); 2) the availability of large studies to interrogate associations …

The Digital Glow: Effects Of Blue Light On Children And The Development Of A Children's Book To Raise Awareness On Eye Health, Mallory Easland 2025 University of Nebraska - Lincoln

The Digital Glow: Effects Of Blue Light On Children And The Development Of A Children's Book To Raise Awareness On Eye Health, Mallory Easland

Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)

As digital screen use continues to rise among children, concerns about the effects of blue light on eye health, sleep patterns, and overall well-being have grown. Research suggests that prolonged exposure to blue light can contribute to digital eye strain, disrupt circadian rhythms, and impact cognitive development. This thesis explores scientific literature on the biological effects of blue light, specifically on children, examining both the risks associated with excessive exposure and strategies for mitigating its impact.

In addition to conducting a comprehensive literature review, this project applies research findings to the creation of an educational children’s book aimed at promoting …

Myopia is the most common eye disease and a leading cause of blindness. A contemporary, large, and ethnically and geographically diverse study of ocular biometry and refractive error in children in the United States is needed to help better describe differences between myopic and nonmyopic eyes.

This is an initial cross-sectional report from the Refractive Error and Axial Length Growth Curve Study that includes ocular component data as a function of age, gender, and geographic location. This feasibility report will inform a planned larger longitudinal ocular growth study in children in the United States.

Cross-sectional data on children, ages 3 …

Disc Edema Secondary To Sleep Apnea: A Case Report, Jeannette A. Wong-Powell OD 2025 University of the Incarnate Word

Disc Edema Secondary To Sleep Apnea: A Case Report, Jeannette A. Wong-Powell Od

Optometric Clinical Practice

Background: Bilateral optic disc edema is associated with multiple systemic conditions of potentially dire consequences. Idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH) is a common culprit and diagnosis of exclusion, which has been observed in multiple patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and raised questions of a pathophysiological link between the two.

Case Report: A 28-year-old Caucasian male with history of transient ischemic attack-like symptoms presented with bilateral disc edema prompting a multi-disciplinary work up that included imaging, lumbar puncture, laboratory analysis, neuroophthalmological, cardiological, and pulmonary evaluations that ultimately led to a diagnosis of OSA. The case is unique in that it followed …

An Uncharacteristic Case Presentation Of Functional Vision Disorder, Ramandeep Kaur Od, Theresa Zerilli-Zavgorodni Od, Nancy Shenouda-Awad Od

Optometric Clinical Practice

Background: Functional Vision Disorder (FVD), also commonly referred to as functional vision loss (FVL) or non-organic vision loss (NOVL), is defined as a visual acuity (VA) loss and/or visual field (VF) loss, without any identifiable ocular or cortical pathology. Many clinicians look at FVD as a diagnosis of exclusion and while it is imperative to rule out organic pathology, FVD diagnosis must be supported by clinical findings that prove normal visual function. Incorporating supplementary tests specific for demonstrating the integrity of the visual system and the non-organic nature of the symptoms will allow clinicians to be more confident when diagnosing …

A Case Report Of Vitreopapillary Traction Mistaken For Optic Disc Edema, Breyne Middleton OD, Drew Anderson OD 2025 Lexington VA Health Care System

A Case Report Of Vitreopapillary Traction Mistaken For Optic Disc Edema, Breyne Middleton Od, Drew Anderson Od

Optometric Clinical Practice

Background: Traction of the optic disc occurs during incomplete detachment of the posterior vitreous from the peripapillary glial tissue. It can sometimes cause the appearance of disc edema and bilateral cases can be confused with papilledema or cause patients to be worked up for pseudotumor cerebri.

Case Report: A patient presented with an outside diagnosis of unilateral optic disc edema and was found in fact to have vitreopapillary traction.

Conclusion: Costly, ultimately unnecessary testing such as magnetic resonance imaging can be sometimes avoided if vitreopapillary traction is considered as a differential for disc edema. It can be easily identified with …

A Space-Occupying Lesion Manifesting As Unilateral Optic Disc Edema, Len V. Koh Od, Phd, Anna Wells Od, Lindsay Jansen Od

Optometric Clinical Practice

Background: Primary and secondary orbital diseases can arise from different tissues in the periorbital regions as space-occupying lesion leading to ophthalmic symptoms. Therefore, eye care providers are often the first encounter for these patients.

Case report: A 54-year-old Caucasian male presented as a new patient at the eye clinic with an incidental finding of edema of the left optic disc. After a thorough optometric evaluation, a referral was made to a local ear-nose-throat (ENT) specialist who confirmed a diagnosis of cavernous hemangioma by further neuroimaging. Surgical removal eventuated in resolution of disc edema with restoration of vision.

Conclusion: An insidious …

R Exams And Continuous Assessment, Eugene Hickey 2025 Technological University Dublin

R Exams And Continuous Assessment, Eugene Hickey

Case studies: Digital Education

The traditional format of CA, the midterm test, was proving inadequate for our final year students. Waiting several weeks into semester before getting detailed feedback on their performance and the congestion of several midterm tests from different modules were having a negative impact on the learning experience. To that end a regular series of CA work was deemed preferential. It would be unfeasible to do this during class, and it is more student-friendly to let them do these in their own time. Therefore, online tests hosted on a VLE were seen as the solution. To ensure that students were working …

Targeting oncogenes and their interactive partners is an effective approach to developing novel targeted therapies for cancer and other chronic diseases. We and others have long suggested the MDM2 oncogene being an excellent target for cancer therapy, based on its p53-dependent and -independent oncogenic activities in a variety of cancers. The MYC family proteins are transcription factors that also regulate diverse biological functions. Dysregulation of MYC, such as amplification of MYCN, is associated with tumorigenesis, especially for neuroblastoma. Although the general survival rate of neuroblastoma patients has significantly improved over the past few decades, high-risk neuroblastoma still presents a …

Importance

Semaglutide, a glucagonlike peptide-1 receptor agonist (GLP-1RA), has recently been implicated in cases of nonarteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION), raising safety concerns in the treatment of type 2 diabetes (T2D).

Objective

To investigate the potential association between semaglutide and NAION in the Observational Health Data Sciences and Informatics (OHDSI) network.

Design, Setting, and Participants

This was a retrospective study across 14 databases (6 administrative claims and 8 electronic health records). Included were adults with T2D taking semaglutide, other GLP-1RA (dulaglutide, exenatide), or non–GLP-1RA medications (empagliflozin, sitagliptin, glipizide) from December 1, 2017, to December 31, 2023. The incidence proportion …

Obesity and type 2 diabetes (T2D) increase cardiovascular risk, largely due to altered metabolic state. An early consequence of T2D/obesity is the loss of endothelial function and impaired nitric oxide (NO) signaling. In blood vessels, endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) synthesizes NO to maintain vessel homeostasis. The biological actions of NO are compromised by superoxide that is generated by NADPH oxidases (NOXs). Herein we investigated how altered metabolism affects superoxide/NO balance in obesity. We found that eNOS expression and NO bioavailability are significantly decreased in endothelial cells (ECs) from T2D patients and animal models of obesity. In parallel, PFKFB3, a …

BACKGROUND: The incidence of early-onset colorectal cancer (EOCRC) has been rising at an alarming rate in the USA, and EOCRC disproportionately affects racial/ethnic minorities. Here, we construct comprehensive profiles of EOCRC DNA methylomes at base-pair resolution for a cohort of Hispanic and African American patients.

RESULTS: We show the epigenetic landscape of these EOCRC patients differs from that of late-onset colorectal cancer patients, and methylation canyons in EOCRC tumor tissue preferentially overlapped genes in cancer-related pathways. Furthermore, we identify epigenetic alterations in metabolic genes that are specific to our racial/ethnic minority EOCRC cohort but not Caucasian patients from TCGA. Top …

We developed ligandomics for the in vivo profiling of vascular ligands in mice, discovering secretogranin III (Scg3) as a novel angiogenic factor that selectively binds to retinal vessels of diabetic but not healthy mice. This discovery led to the development of anti-Scg3 therapy for ocular vasculopathies. However, in vivo ligandomics requires intracardial perfusion to remove unbound phage clones, limiting its use to vascular endothelial cells (ECs). To extend ligandomics to non-vascular cells, we investigated ex vivo ligandomics. We isolated ECs and retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) from diabetic and healthy mouse retinas by immunopanning. We quantified the binding of clonal phages …

Molecular Mechanism Of Congenital Cataract Caused By G91 Deletion In Cryβa1, Akosua Konadu Boateng 2025 University of Alabama at Birmingham

Molecular Mechanism Of Congenital Cataract Caused By G91 Deletion In Cryβa1, Akosua Konadu Boateng

All ETDs from UAB

The Deletion of Glycine 91 is a mutational hotspot in the CRYβA1 gene (mutant named βA3ΔG91), which causes autosomal dominant congenital nuclear cataracts in several ethnically diverse populations worldwide. Previous in-vitro studies of recombinant βA3ΔG91 protein revealed that this mutation results in defective protein folding, reduced solubility, and oligomerization with other crystallins. While βA3/A1-crystallin is primarily known as a structural protein in the lens, it also plays a role in autophagy regulation in the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) by controlling endolysosomal acidification through the V-ATPase proton pump. This study employs a novel βA3ΔG91 knock-in mouse model to investigate the pathogenic …
