Introduction: Critical Limb Threatening Ischemia (CLTI) presents a significant challenge, particularly for individuals with diabetes mellitus (DM) or End-Stage Kidney Disease (ESKD). Healthcare disparities related to race and ethnicity are a pressing concern. This study aims to examine a 16-year trend to assess whether the disparities in managing critical limb-threatening ischemia (CLTI) are diminishing among individuals with diabetes mellitus (DM) or End-Stage Kidney Disease (ESKD).
Methods: The analysis involved an examination of the National Inpatient Sample data from 2005 to 2020, with a focus on hospitalizations related to CLI. Identification of …

OBJECTIVE: Our objectives were to describe time intervals of EMS encounters for suspected stroke patients in North Carolina (NC) and evaluate differences in EMS time intervals by community socioeconomic status (SES) and rurality.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study used statewide data on EMS encounters of suspected stroke in NC in 2019. Eligible patients were adults requiring EMS transport to a hospital following a 9-1-1 call for stroke-like symptoms. Incident street addresses were geocoded to census tracts and linked to American Community Survey SES data and to rural-urban commuting area (RUCA) codes. Community SES was defined as high, medium, or low based …

Exploring The Efficacy Of Mir-33 Antagonism In Promoting Regression Of Intracranial Atherosclerosis In A Nonhuman Primate Model, Peter Hecker
Theses and Dissertations--Pharmacology and Nutritional Sciences
Atherosclerosis, characterized by lipid accumulation and arterial inflammation, is a major contributor to global morbidity and mortality. Despite significant progress in understanding atherosclerosis in extracranial arteries, the study of intracranial atherosclerosis (ICAS) has been relatively neglected, despite its crucial role in stroke and vascular cognitive impairment. Challenges related to ICAS, including its location within the cranium and limited availability of suitable animal models, have hindered research progress in this area. Although nonhuman primates (NHPs) are commonly used for studying extracranial atherosclerosis, a comprehensive understanding of ICAS pathophysiology in these animals is lacking. By subjecting NHPs to a high-fat/cholesterol diet, we …

All Master's Theses
Metabolic-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) affects 1 in 3 people in the US and is a healthcare burden on the order of billions of dollars. MAFLD is characterized by pathological lipid accumulation in the liver, excess production of triglycerides and cholesterol, and export of LDL particles that raise serum lipid levels. These metabolic perturbations can lead to the development of liver fibrosis, chronic inflammation, and insulin resistance. Diagnosing MAFLD prior to fibrosis is crucial for successful intervention and prevention of advanced liver disease and other metabolic complications. Fructose-1Phospahte (F1P) accumulation from fructose overconsumption can drive hepatic lipogenesis and MAFLD progression. …

Introduction
Biases in communication can be harmful to patient perceptions of care and the medical team's decision-making. Optimal communication must be taught and practiced similarly to the optimal management of the complex medical conditions associated with sickle cell disease (SCD). This simulation is designed to teach about biases, optimizing communication to and about a patient with SCD, and appropriately diagnosing and managing pediatric osteomyelitis as a complication of SCD.
Methods
We designed and implemented a simulation case targeting emergency medicine residents and fellows to raise awareness about biases associated with SCD care and the complication of osteomyelitis in children with …

Our understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying postsurgical recurrence of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is rudimentary. Molecular and T cell repertoire intratumor heterogeneity (ITH) have been reported to be associated with postsurgical relapse; however, how ITH at the cellular level impacts survival is largely unknown. Here we report the analysis of 2880 multispectral images representing 14.2% to 27% of tumor areas from 33 patients with stage I NSCLC, including 17 cases (relapsed within 3 years after surgery) and 16 controls (without recurrence ≥5 years after surgery) using multiplex immunofluorescence. Spatial analysis was conducted to quantify the minimum distance between …

This study examines the consequences of Alzheimer’s in rat and mice test subjects. The goal is to identify the effects of certain NLRP3 inhibiting drugs and to see if there are any noticeable effects in regards to impeding the pathological development of Alzheimer’s disease. The results are visualized by implementing the immunohistochemical process to identify neurodegeneration in the brain and to assess the expression levels of amyloid beta as an indicator of Alzheimer’s pathology. Other tests are also conducted on these transgenic mice to gauge cognitive functioning levels during the onset of their disease, those being behavior tests, but not …
