Background: Lack of early risk detection, diagnosis, and treatment of pregnant women at high risk for pre-eclampsia can result in high maternal mortality and morbidity not only in Pakistan but also in other low- to middle-income countries (LMICs). A potential tool for supporting pregnant women at high risk for pre-eclampsia for early detection is telemonitoring (TM). However, there is a limited body of evidence on end-user needs and preferences to inform the design of the TM programs for pregnant women at high risk for pre-eclampsia, specifically in LMICs such as Pakistan.
Objective: This study aims to explore the needs of …

Introduction: Quality antenatal care is a window of opportunity for improving maternal and neonatal outcomes. Numerous studies have shown a positive effect of women empowerment on improved coverage of maternal and reproductive health services, including antenatal care (ANC). However, there is scarce evidence on the association between women's empowerment and improved ANC services both in terms of coverage and quality. Addressing this gap, this paper examines the relationship between multi-dimensional measures of women empowerment on utilization of quality ANC (service coverage and consultation) in Pakistan.
Methods: We used Pakistan Demographic and Health Survey 2017-18 (PDHS) data which comprises of 6,602 …

This thesis deals with mental health, with a focus on Black women. Historically, Black women are often so compromised, being constant caregivers and helping everyone else, that they forget to help themselves, not having the time and financial means to do so. If we go back in the time of slavery, many Black women were taking care of slave owners' children and suckling the white women’s babies instead of their own. By the time they got home and after diligently caring for other people’s children they were focused on their own children, who they had been away from for hours …

Preterm birth is a global epidemic and a leading cause of neonatal mortality in Sub-Saharan Africa. We evaluated the prevalence and risk factors of preterm birth among women attending the labor ward for delivery at a tertiary hospital in Ghana. This comparative cross-sectional study was conducted among a cohort of 209 pregnant women admitted to the labor ward of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH). Pregnant women who delivered between 28 and 36 completed weeks of gestation were classified as preterm delivery whereas those who delivered after 37–42 completed weeks were described as term. Sociodemographic, clinical, and obstetric data were …

Vulvodynia is an underdiagnosed condition that affects about 25% of women1. Patients report frustration and a lack of knowledge in the medical community regarding their symptoms of vulvar pain. Painful penetration makes performing an internal pelvic exam difficult, and patients may avoid annual gynecological appointments due to fear. It is imperative for providers to understand and implement the correct approach for accurate diagnosis. Once the diagnosis of vulvodynia has been identified, the multimodal treatment plan should be implemented to include pharmacological therapy, referral to physical therapy, and psychotherapy. With continued research and the use of evidence-based practice, the gap in …

Painful sexual intercourse, or dyspareunia, is a condition numerous women experience. An unknown, but still important, number of those affected find no relief with medication or surgery. Yet, it can be difficult for patients to discuss concerns with their provider. In addition, many providers do not have an adequate comfort level to discuss such topics. This paper aims to equip providers with non-pharmacological treatment options which include pelvic floor physical therapy, sex therapy and lifestyle changes. With the cultural shifts and changing ideas of sexuality in today’s age, it is important that clinicians remain versed in sexual health and patient …

As evidence-based practice on health topics and standards continually evolves, it remains the responsibility of the clinicians to seek out data and newly discovered information that may pertain to patient populations. A longstanding issue that clinicians must address is the approach to primary dysmenorrhea. Currently it is estimated that 50% to 90% of the female population in the reproductive age group experiences this condition, making it the most prevalent health related problem among women of these ages. While this number represents a wide range of the population, many women still accept the symptoms of dysmenorrhea as commonplace and therefore do …

BACKGROUND: COPA syndrome is a rare autoimmune disease, demonstrating an autosomal dominant inheritance pattern with variable penetration that occurs more frequently in females than males. This disease manifests in childhood as pulmonary hemorrhage, arthritis, and renal disease.
CASE: We present a case of obstetric management of a 20-year-old nulligravida patient with a diagnosis of COPA syndrome. Her case was further complicated by multiple antepartum admissions for hypoxemia and a complex psychosocial history of substance use. On her first antepartum admission, rheumatology recommended management with hydroxychloroquine, inhaled corticosteroids (budesonide), and bronchodilators (albuterol inhaler) as needed. On admission for induction of labor, …

Genital Chlamydia Infection Is Influenced By The Female Sex Hormones Estrogen And Progesterone In Vivo, Amy Gail Gravitte
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Chlamydia is the most common bacterial sexually transmitted infection in the United States and worldwide. It often goes unnoticed due to lack of symptoms and left untreated it can ascend the female genital tract to cause sequelae like pelvic inflammatory disease and irreversible tubal infertility. In reproductive-aged women, female sex hormones estrogen (E2) and progesterone (P4) concentrations fluctuate during the menstrual cycle and are influenced by hormonal contraceptives and hormone replacement therapy. E2 and P4 influence genital Chlamydia infection in women and mice, but these multifactorial interactions are not entirely mapped out. The complex interplay of E2 and P4 with …

This DNP project was conducted to identify gaps in knowledge focusing on sexually transmitted infections within Texas and Region one. The research study gathered data from first-year nursing students who have chosen to participate in a sexually transmitted infection-focused educational module. Participants were first-year nursing students and understood the research study was strictly voluntary with no forms of compensation. Currently, the curriculum in the nursing program at which the study took place does not focus on sexually transmitted infections and is directed to speak minimally on the subject. This is a contributing factor to why the rise in sexually transmitted …
