Working Together: Joint-Use Canadian Academic And Public Libraries, Rachel Sarjeant-Jenkins, Keith Walker
Collaborative Librarianship
The research purpose was to learn about existing joint use public-academic libraries in Canada including their establishment, structure, benefits, and challenges and to determine the requirements for successful partnerships. Following a literature review, a short survey was conducted to gather data on the number, location, and types of public-academic library partnerships. In-depth telephone interviews were then held with key personnel from joint use libraries to learn more about the libraries and the nature of the partnerships. The research surfaced three unique examples of joint use public-academic libraries. In addition, key requirements for successful partnerships that were posited through the literature …

Institutional leaders are asking libraries and IT units, as service providers, to provide data about service use, service quality and return on investment as they make decisions about resource allocation. In 2012, New York University developed a Peer Benchmarking Methodology for prioritizing research support needs by benchmarking themselves with more than a dozen peer institutions. The University of California at Berkeley borrowed and adapted NYU’s methodology as the starting point and used it to benchmark teaching and learning services along with research services for a planning and community building initiative across the campus. Here we present the methodology and discuss …

Central University Libraries Research
Digital repositories most often collect traditional materials, such as theses, articles and images that do not require unique workflows or practices. The first talk discusses how his library dealt with nontraditional materials such as 3D models, embeddable media, student exhibits, and other unique works. Whether due to new file formats, visual effects, or certain aspects of performance art, there are certain items that require unique expertise and innovative design. Get tips and tricks from our speaker for doing this in your environment. The need for providing information concerning copyright permissions should be part of any academic library’s instructional suite of …

Talking About Open Access: Smash And Subtler Tactics, Jill Cirasella
Publications and Research
This slideshow covers different ways of answering the question “Why open access?” It reviews the knee-jerk reactions many people have when they hear about open access, describes the many benefits of open access, invokes @openaccesshulk’s strategy of SMASH, and discusses what arguments work best with different populations (students, faculty, administrators, etc.). Finally, it addresses why librarians should try to talk about open access without resorting to constant use of the term “open access” and describes a few ways to sneak open access advocacy into other conversations.

A comparison of the five most widely adopted IR platforms: Digital Commons, Dspace, Eprints, Fedora, and Islandora.
Conclusion
After more than a decade of expanding the reach of scholarship, the institutional repository continues to develop and offer modern tools for libraries and researchers. While the foundational elements of collection, preservation, and dissemination remain intact, the repository platform options continue to offer new and exciting ways to expand readership. Library-led publishing efforts and the desire to represent the entire breadth of an institution's research through journals, image collections, and books have made the repository a destination rather than a holding place …

Catholic academic libraries are the focus of this study for several reasons. Not only are Catholic academic libraries private institutions with varying budgets, but they hold special and unique collections of particular interest to a diverse group of constituents, including scholars, vowed religious, and laypersons. With these elements in mind, to what extent are Catholic academic libraries still using print promotional materials? This study aims to uncover trends concerning academic libraries' budgets, staffing, and production workflows with regard to promoting with print.

The Research Lifecycle At Ucf: A Library-Led Institutional Collaboration To Develop A Mental Model Of Research Support, Penny Beile, Rich Gause
Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
Researchers at the University of Central Florida have access to support for acquiring and managing grants, writing and publishing research results, and performing computational analysis of large data. However, until recently these services were not coordinated at the institutional level and there was no clearinghouse to connect researchers to available support. In response, the UCF Libraries, with input from faculty and relevant campus units, developed a mental model of support and services of interest to university researchers. The model, in the form of an online interactive infographic, illustrates the research lifecycle from inception to completion, identifies support services available to …
