Listening To Shells And Discovering A Lost World; Epiphanic Experiences At The Museum, Catherine M.C. Closet-Crane
Listening To Shells And Discovering A Lost World; Epiphanic Experiences At The Museum, Catherine M.C. Closet-Crane
Proceedings from the Document Academy
This paper aims to entertain the possibilities for analysis, interpretation, and learning offered by evocative autoethnographic texts for LAM and LIS user studies. The focus in this paper is on storytelling as autoethnographic writing. To illustrate facets of a particular cultural experience and start a conversation about the transformative power of museum objects as documents, the story told in this paper recounts a series of events and experiences from the life of two visitors after their museum encounter with an engraved shell artifact from the archeological site of Spiro Mounds in Oklahoma.
Library Publishing Is Special: Selection And Eligibility In Library Publishing, Paul Royster
Library Publishing Is Special: Selection And Eligibility In Library Publishing, Paul Royster
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Faculty Publications
Traditional publishing is based on ownership, commerce, paid exchanges, and scholarship as a commodity, while library activities are based on a service model of sharing resources and free exchange. I believe library publishing should be based on those values and should not duplicate or emulate traditional publishing. University presses have mixed views of library publishing, and libraries should not adopt those attitudes. Library publishers are not gatekeepers; their mission is dissemination. Libraries need to publish because traditional publishing suffers from high rejection rates, required surrender of intellectual property, long production schedules, high cost of products, and limited dissemination. Nebraska’s Zea …

Focusing On Student Research In The Institutional Repository, Danielle M. Barandiaran, Betty Rozum, Becky Thoms
Library Faculty & Staff Publications
Student research is a significant and rapidly growing component of the institutional repository (IR) at Utah State University (USU). A briefing paper prepared for Open Access Scholarly Information Sourcebook (OASIS) points to student works as one of nine purposes for an IR.1 It is not uncommon to find undergraduate and graduate theses and dissertations in IRs. In 2013, an analysis of 283 U.S. repositories using the bepress or DSpsace platforms indicated 71% include this type of student research. However, other student research such as posters, presentations, or papers were only found in 38% of these repositories. Utah State University’s …

Where Is The Evidence? Realising The Value Of Grey Literature For Public Policy & Practice, A Discussion Paper, Amanda Lawrence, John Houghton, Julian Thomas, Paul Weldon
Where Is The Evidence? Realising The Value Of Grey Literature For Public Policy & Practice, A Discussion Paper, Amanda Lawrence, John Houghton, Julian Thomas, Paul Weldon
Copyright, Fair Use, Scholarly Communication, etc.
The internet has profoundly changed how we produce, use and collect research and information for public policy and practice, with grey literature playing an increasingly important role. The authors argue that grey literature (i.e. material produced and published by organisations without recourse to the commercial or scholarly publishing industry) is a key part of the evidence produced and used for public policy and practice. Through surveys of users, producing organisations and collecting services a detailed picture is provided of the importance and economic value of grey literature. However, finding and accessing policy information is a time-consuming task made harder by …

The Semantic Web ( Web 3.03.0) has been proposed as an efficient way to access the increasingly large amounts of data on the internet. The Linked Open Data Cloud project at present is the major effort to implement the concepts of the Seamtic Web, addressing the problems of in homogeneity and large data volumes. RKBExplorer is one of many repositories implementing Open Data and contains considerable bibliographic information. Th is paper discusses bibliographic data data, an important part of cloud data. Effective searching of bibliographic datasets can be a challenge as many of the papers residing in these databases do …

University presses (UP's) are essential to the advancement of our culture and the understanding of our world, and, are just as much at the forefront of publishing innovation as anyone. UP's publish and engage in some of the most essential research across the humanities, sciences and arts, and, also dive in to top-of-mind trending topics. Academic libraries are prized hubs of information, supporting a school's curriculum and the research of its university faculty and students - the foundation of content. In an effort to strengthen its relationship with its host institution library and help promote scholarship, the University Press of …

Data Narratives: Increasing Scholarly Value, Line C. Pouchard, Amy Barton, Lisa Zilinski
Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research
Data narratives or data stories have emerged as a new form of the scholarly communication focused on data. In this paper, we explore the potential value of data narratives and the requirements for data stories to enhance scholarly communication. We examine three types of data stories that form a continuum from the less to the more structured: the DataONE data stories, the Data Curation Profiles, and the Data Descriptors from the journal Scientific Data. We take the position that these data stories will increase the value of scholarly communication if they are linked to the datasets and to the publications …
Librarians Going Mobile: Applying “Threshold Concepts” To The Design Of E-Booklets For Library Instruction., Lorna M. Dawes
Librarians Going Mobile: Applying “Threshold Concepts” To The Design Of E-Booklets For Library Instruction., Lorna M. Dawes
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Faculty Publications
Assuming that students no longer read printed handouts, many librarians have stopped producing printed handouts after observing the piles of paper that remain after library sessions. Libraries have transitioned comfortably to providing online access to handout information via subject and course guides, and now need to make a more complete transition to making them mobile. Although only four in ten college students own a tablet, 75% own a smart phone, and over a third of students intend to purchase either a tablet or a smart phone in the next six months. (“Pearson Student Mobile” 7). Librarians are all aware that …

This article outlines the collaboration between librarians at the Graduate Center Library of the City University of New York (CUNY) and JustPublics@365 (http://justpublics365.commons.gc.cuny.edu/about/), an initiative designed to open scholarly communication in ways that connect to social justice activism, part of which involved producing an open, online interdisciplinary course with a geographical focus on East Harlem. This Participatory Open Online Course, or POOC, was developed locally without a licensed provider platform or licensed scholarly content. It was designed to be open to CUNY students, to citizens of East Harlem, and to a global public with an interest in social …

The Inter Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR), a domain repository with a 50 50-year track record of archiving social and behavioural science data, applied for for—and acquired acquired—the Data Seal of Approval (DSA) in 2010. DSA is a non non-intrusive, straightforward approach to assessing organizational, technical, and operational infrastructure infrastructure, and signifies a basic level of accreditation . DSA assessment helped ICPSR become more transparent , monitor and improve archival processes and procedures , and raise awareness within the organization and beyond about best practice practices for repositories repositories. We relate our experience experiences with the DSA …

Building On The International Polar Year : D Iscovering Interdisciplinary Data Through Federated Search, L. Yarmey, S.J. Khalsa
Copyright, Fair Use, Scholarly Communication, etc.
The legacy of the International Polar Year 2007 2007–2008 (IPY) includes advances in open data and meaningful progress toward towards interoperability of data, systems, and standards. Enabled by metadata brokering technologies and by the growing adoption of international metadata standards, federated data search welcomes diversity in Arctic data and recognizes the value of expertise in community data repositories repositories. Federated search enables specialized data holdings to be discovered by broader audiences and complements the role of metadata registries such as the Global Change Master Directory, providing interoperability across the Arctic web-of -repositories.

Faculty Author Rights Workshop: Strategies For Retaining Your (Copy)Rights, Char Booth, M. Sara Lowe, Allegra Swift
Open Access Week @ The Claremont Colleges
The publication process can feel like a one-sided negotiation, with journal and book publishers holding the power to dictate restrictive terms of use and reuse. Thanks to a growing number of strategies and tools, this is no longer necessarily the case.
By empowering attendees with insight into author addenda and open access (OA) repositories, this hands-on interactive session will explore how researchers and authors can advocate for themselves in their relationship with their publishers.
You will leave this workshop with a skillset that can help you retain copyright and maximize your scholarly impact.
