Jennifer Thomson, assistant professor of History at Bucknell University, interviews Jill Hallam-Miller, Dan Heuer, and Tammy Troup, Bucknell librarians, Scholarly Communications committee members, and Open Access advocates. The group contrasts the current closed model of scholarly publishing with the aims of Open Access. The discussion revolves around specific cases, describes the use of Open Educational Resources on college campuses, and includes comments about the recent decision by the University of California library to boycott Elsevier. The conversation concludes with a discussion about Open Access as a value at Bucknell University.

During Open Education Week 2019, Musselman Library's Department of Scholarly Communications educated the campus community about issues of textbook affordability and about the development of Open Educational Resources. This poster provides basic information about what Open Education is and how it is a response to the high cost of course materials, which creates barriers for many students who cannot afford to purchase their books. Open Education seeks to create equitable access to all course materials and transform traditional ideas about pedagogy.

Making Data Bearable, Part 1: Data Management Basics
During this hands-on workshop, participants explore challenges and best practices related to research data management. Working in groups, participants perform a rudimentary data analysis and create figures and tables capturing the correlation between Gummi Bear flavor and "springiness." In the process, participants explore different kinds of research data and discuss manipulation, analysis, visualization, reporting, and sharing data for different audiences. This workshop is a precursor to discussing data management planning, especially as it relates to grant funding and publisher requirements. Eighteen Blind Library Users’ Experiences With Library Websites And Search Tools In U.S. Academic Libraries: A Qualitative Study, Adina Mulliken

Publications and Research

Telephone interviews were conducted with 18 blind academic library users around the U.S. about their experiences using their library and its website. The study uses the perspective that blind users’ insights are fundamental. A common theme was that navigating a webpage is time consuming on the first visit. Issues identified include the need for “databases” to be defined on the homepage, accessibly coded search boxes, logical heading structure, and several problems to be resolved on result pages. Variations in needs depending on users’ screen reader expertise were also raised. Suggestions for libraries to address these issues are offered.

In this paper, we discuss possible pedagogical applications for virtual and augmented reality (VR and AR), within a humanities/social sciences curriculum, articulating a critical need for academic libraries to collect and curate 3D objects. We contend that building infrastructure is critical to keep pace with innovative pedagogies and scholarship. We offer theoretical avenues for libraries to build a repository 3D object files to be used in VR and AR tools and sketch some anticipated challenges. The paper presents a comparative study of top-ranked Asiatic region journals of the Library and Information Science discipline. SCImago Journal and the country rank was used to determine the top-ranked Asiatic journals in the domain of library and information science. Initially, the top 10 journals were considered which filtered based on the coverage and SJR Ranked. A total of 6 Journals were considered for further evaluation and comparison, which meets different parameters and criteria. A comprehensive scientometric study was also presented of these six journals. Further, the paper presents the publication patterns of these six top-ranked journals.

This means that researchers now have ways of making their data available, but not necessarily incentives to do so. Several Research Data Alliance (RDA) working groups have been working on ways to start measuring activities around research data to provide input for new Data Level Metrics (DLMs). The Performing Arts Librarian at Chapman University incorporated open access archives into his Music Information Literacy course in order to accomplish several learning objectives: a) introduce students to recognizing the importance of primary sources; b) interact with open access archival resources; and c) create an opportunity to discuss information privilege. This discussion takes inspiration from the “Information Has Value” frame from the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education, specifically related to the knowledge practice to “recognize issues of access or lack of access to information sources” and the disposition to “examine their own information privilege.”

In this talk I cover the rise of open scholarly metadata thanks to efforts to create open infrastructure by non profits such as Crossref, Datacite, ROR as well as efforts from organizations such as JISC CORE, Opencitations, I4OC (Initative for open citations) to harvest and extract scholarly data. I talk about how libraries have benefited from all this data (most of which is available via APIs) and how Lens.org has brought most of this data together to create a compelling open service.

This study aims to conduct an altmetrics analysis of researchers on Indian Naval Architecture. The study covered sixty-fourfacultymembersonNaval Architecture discipline from six higher education institutions in India. The profile page of ResearchGate (RG) was visited to collect altmetrics indicators. The study also tried to perform scientometric analysis of publication outputs, citations and H-index of the researchers using the Scopus database. The study further investigated the correlation of altmetrics and scientometric indicators with Pearson correlation test.
