In a commentary, the uthor noted that university libraries often overlook research staff due to the transitory nature of these roles. She emphasised that these staff are key drivers of research productivity, bringing specialised skills and adaptability to evolving methodologies. To better support them, the author urged libraries to engage research staff through initiatives like SMU’s workshops co-taught by librarians and researchers and the SMU Researcher Club, which fosters their professional and personal growth while building future collaborations across academia and industry

The Impact Of Ai Bots And Crawlers On Open Repositories: Results Of A Coar Survey, April 2025, Kathleen Shearer, Paul Walk

There are a growing number of AI bots crawling repositories. These automated bots, or crawlers, navigate the internet, gathering data and indexing information for search engines, AI and large language models, and other purposes. While some bots are rather innocuous, others are sufficiently aggressive that they are increasingly causing service disruptions in repositories (and other scholarly communications infrastructures). To learn more about the current state and gain a better understanding about the impact of bots and crawlers on repositories, COAR distributed a survey to members in April 2025. As more faculty and graduate students conduct systematic reviews and other evidence/knowledge syntheses, it can be helpful for academic libraries to provide services and resources to support this type of research. This study identifies trends in evidence/knowledge synthesis support services among (thirty-six) selected institutions with Carnegie classifications of R1 or R2. Data about services and resources was collected from research guides, webpages, and via communications with library employees. There are many similarities between how R1 and R2 institutions are providing support, with a higher incidence of more comprehensive services among R1 universities. Changes to academic publishing in the form of digital technologies and copyright law over the late 20th century have created increasing roadblocks for scholars to consistently and conveniently access research literature in their pursuit of scholarly work. As a result, academic pirate networks (APNs) such as Sci-Hub and Library Genesis have risen to fulfill the unmet needs of scholars. This study examined the experiences of scholars using APNs with a focus on how scholars make sense of their experiences with participating on APNs. The “Degrees in Action: Utilizing Public Relations Students' Expertise to Expand the Reach of OER” poser presentation highlights a collaboration between a Public Relations (PR) Campaigns Course and OER and Digital Scholarship Department. PR students were empowered to apply their skills in developing and executing a public awareness campaign that highlighted the benefits and availability of OER on the University of Texas in Arlington campus.

Publications and Research

Early-career researchers from Spanish-speaking Latin American countries and small U.S. universities are underrepresented in international scientific databases. They have geographical importance, infectious disease endemicity, and exceptional researchers in microbiology, but these factors do not translate to representation in high-impact scientific publications. Many reasons could be involved, including financial burdens such as the inability to pay article processing charges. Additional teaching, institutional, and service responsibilities also highly influence their research productivity. Despite this, they are expected to publish high-impact articles, and their career development highly depends on it. Judge Roy Bean was a legendary justice of the peace in Texas, known as the “Law West of the Pecos.” However, he was not known for his encyclopedic knowledge of the law. Judge Bean “had only one law book, a copy of the Revised Statutes of Texas, printed in 1879, as authorized by the Sixteenth Texas Legislature.” He relied exclusively on that book, and “[e]ven though the legislature sent him new books every two years, reflecting new laws, he burned them. He said he liked the old book better and he like those laws better, too.”

Gettysburg College began tracking OER adoptions in a Google Sheet – and we quickly outgrew it. We migrated to Airtable (a web-based spreadsheet-database platform) in 2023 and immediately appreciated its advanced capabilities and potential for making sense of our complex data. As a result, we can now produce raw statistics and compelling data-based stories regarding OER use and zero-cost/low-cost courses for campus stakeholders at all levels. The study examined the influence of staff development and job motivation on the job performance of library staff in selected universities in Ogun State. The study utilised a descriptive survey research design of the correlation type. The population of this study comprised 146 library staff, and a total enumeration was employed for this study. Out of 146 copies of the questionnaire administered, 113 copies were returned, collated and found valuable for the study. Statistical Packages for Social Sciences software version was used to analyse data using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, correlation, and regression. Over the last several years libraries in the United States have dealt with an increasing number of book challenges and calls for censorship of materials. The challenges and calls for censorship are no longer only from library patrons, but now include national organizations and even local and state legislators. Some of these actions have moved to criminalize librarians and curtail first amendment rights. Due to this new climate, it is important to examine the effect these culture wars have on library collection development decisions. This quantitative study seeks to answer that question with a nationwide survey of library professionals.

Assessment of information literacy efforts can impact college students’ success and retention. Library outreach and partnerships with teaching faculty, especially those targeted towards first-year students, are important. What The Folk: Analyzing Folk Music Collections In The Mississippi Library Partnership, David Salinero, Fawn Ussery

This study analyzes the folk music literature collections held in the Mississippi Library Partnership’s 12 library systems. The authors used Dick Weissman’s 100 Books Every Folk Music Fan Should Own as the primary gauge or standard by which to analyze the collections. Authors also examined new titles that Mississippi libraries have collected since the publication of 100 Books in 2014. Findings include an analysis of popular titles and topics, a discussion of folk music and its terminology, and a look at the value of library partnerships.
