Antigenic relatedness of 4 highly virulent infectious bursal disease viruses (Agean: G34, G35; Marmara: G41; Central Anatolia: ETL3) isolated from infectious bursal disease outbreaks that occured during 1990's in Turkey were investigated compara-tively with the reference serotype 1 classic D78 strain, variant E (Ev) and serotype 2 OH viruses by cross virus neutralization (VN). Antigeanic relatedness values (R) for all the viruses were calculated from geometric mean antibody titers of minimum of three tests. Structural protein profiles and antigenic ralatedness of the regional viruses (Agean:G34, G35; Marmara:G41; Central Anatolia:ETL3) isolated from the infectious bursal disease outbreaks in Turkey were examined comparatively with the serotype 1 classic (D78) and variant (E variant) strains using the SDS-PAGE (Sodium Dodecyl Sulphate Polyacrylamide Gel Electrophoresis) and Western immunoblotting techniques. SDS-PAGE analysis of 3 purified field (G34, G35, ETL3) and 1 reference (D78) viruses showed that local viruses had the same protein profiles with the serotype 1 reference strain. The "Fatty Liver and Kidney Syndrome" (FLKS) was induced experimentally in white broiler chickens. Eighty chickens of ten-day-old were divided into equally five groups. These chickens were fed with a daily provided commercial ration containing poultry rendering oil in a ratio of 0% in group I (control group), 5% in group II, 10% in group III, 15% in group IV and 20% in group V for eight weeks. Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

This study was carried out to determine the prevalence of liver fluke infections in cattle and sheep in Trakya (The European Part of Turkey). For this purpose the slaughterhouses of different localities (Tekirdağ, Hadimköy, Lüleburgaz, Çorlu, Kırklareli and Keşan) were visited between 03.03.1997 and 22.10.1997, and a total of 476 sheep and 415 cattle livers were examined. The prevalence rates of fasciolosis hepatica and dicrocoeliosis dendriticum were 3.99% and 23.55% in sheep, and 0.48% and 2.65% in cattle respectively. No changes in livers, which led to the partial or total condemnation, were observed.

The ultrastructure of endogenous stages of Cryptosporidium muris in the stomach of laboratory mice was studied by transmission electron microscopy. Electron microscopy showed the various developmental stages as free in the gastric gland lumina and attached to the mucus cells. The changes in organelle composition and structure of various stages from the sporozoite to young trophozoites and matured oocysts were demonstrated in detail. Two types of the meront were discriminated. The finding of a microgamete on the parasitophorous vacuolar membrane surrounded a macrogamont was interesting for the stage of fertilization in C. muris. In this study, 6 six-week-old puppies born of a stray bitch were used. Four of them were 5 kg, one of them 7 kg and the last 8 kg. Before egg inoculation, fecal examination by flotation technique showed that the animals had no helminth infection. Each puppy was infected orally with 150 embriyonated Toxocara canis eggs. When the egg first seen in their faeces after inoculation, Moxidectin (Cytectin 1% inj) at a dose of 0.2 mg/kgbw was given subcutaneously. Performance data on fertility of ewes, pre-weaning mortilaty of lambs and productivity were collected during two years from 24 village flocks in Cnetral Anatolia. The data included flocks with sheep from the Akkaraman and Merino breeds and their crosses. The overall means for lambing rate, weaning rate, twining rate and pre-weaning lamb mortality were 92.1%, 89.8%, 4.8% and 6.9%, respectively. In the present study, the growth of the Mediterranean mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis Lam., 1819 in the Black Sea on ropes has been studied. The result of a 18 month-trial showed that the mussels grew 72.84±0.74 mm in lenght. Temperature of seawater has been measured (minimum of 7ú°C in the month of February and maximum of 27.7°C in August). Salinity varied from 17.2 to 19.3‰.

It was reportked a case of naturally occurring zinc deficiency in a calf with it's clinical, histopathological, haematological and biochemical findings in province of Elazığ, Turkey. Zinc oxide was administered per orally, in the dose of 100 mg/day for 8 days, and then 40 mg/day for 7 days, and 40 mg/week for 4 weeks. A four-month study of the distribution of morphologic lesions relating to encephalitozoonosis and the staining proper-ties of Encephalitozoon cuniculi was carried out on 40 rabbits from a breeding colony of 100 White New Zealand rabbits. Prominent and constant gross lesions, distinguished by subcapsular, small depressions, were identified in the kidneys of 37 rabbits (92.5%). These lesions were bilateral, and exhibited focal and multifocal distribution. Microscopic examinations of the kidneys revealed that the lesions were characterized by non-purulent granulomatous interstitial nephritis (55%) and chronic interstitial nephritis (45%). Infectious bursal disease (IBD) field viruses were isolated from the bursa Fabricius (BF) materials collected from the IBD infected or suspected flocks in different geographical regions of Turkey during 1992-1994. The field viruses were adapted to embryonated spesific-pathogen-free (SPF) eggs and chicken embryo fibroblast (CEF) cell cultures by serial blind passages and characterized by virus neutralization test (VN). This study was carried out on cows, sheep and goats in Salkaya Village, Kovancılar, Baskıl and Sivrice towns and in Elazığ during 1994 and 1995. Fifty two myiasis cases were detected throughout the study. Forty seven (90.38%) and 5 (9.62%) of the cases were determined in sheep and cows respectively, no myiasis case was encountered in goats. Twenty two (42.32%) of the cases were seen in June during 1994 and 1995, 10 (19.23%) in May, 9 (17.31%) in July, 8 (15.38%) in September and 3 (5.77%) in August. Caecal coccidiosis was determined in 12 white Leghorn chickens aged 18 weeks. Macroscopically, slight thickness, con-gestion and petechie were observed in the caecum. The lumen of caecum was full of blood and, necrotic areas were seen on the mucosal surface due to the damagae of villi epithelisl cells. Microscopically, it was observed that erythrocyte, epithelial cells and forms of parasites were present in the lumen of caecum due to the damage of villi epithelial cells. Lymphocyte, plasma cell and heterophil cell infiltrations were found in the propria mucosa as well as gangrenous typhilitis containing focal necrosis.

Postoperative clinical, histopathological and radiological findings were evaluated for disc fenestration, open discolysis (chy-mopapain) and percutan discolysis which had been performed on three groups of dogs, each group containing 6 healthy mongrels of different ages, sexes and breeds. The degrees of intervertebral space narrowing were classified as mild, medium and severe according to postoperative radiological examinations. A haematological study was carried out with rainbow trouts experimentally infected with Yersinia ruckeri. One hundred rainbow trouts ( Oncorhynchus mykiss) at 192±0.24 g were examined. Yersinia ruckeriat a concentration of 3x10 6 cfu/0.1 ml was intraperitoneally (i.p.) injected to 50 animals. The present study was conducted to determine of incidence and serotype distribution of salmonellae in ground beef on markets in Ankara. Between February 1994 and January 1995, a total of 120 samples were obtained from different butcheries and supermarkets of different regions in Ankara. Salmonellae were found in 3.3% (4/100) of ground beef samples. Three different serotypes were identified among the cultures isolated namely S. anatum (2), S. typhimurium (1) and S. telaviv (1). In this study, the changes (IN) the iodine number (IN), the peroxide value (POV), and the refractive index (RI) of whiting ( Merlangius merlangus euxinus Nord., 1840) liver oil stored in a refrigerator and the relationships between them (4±1°C) were investigated. In a nine-week period, the (IN), the POV and the RI of whiting liver oil stored in the refrigerator were determined to be 169.39- 112.06, 3.56-15.25 meqg O 2 /kg and 1.4818-1.4777 respectively. Arginase (L-arginine amidino hydrolase E.C. 3.5.3.1) is an enzyme catalyzing the last stage of the Krebs-Henseleit cycle and, thus, converting arginine into urea and ornithine. Arginase also plays a part in protein and polyamine synthesis and is affected by hormones in terms of metabolic status. In the present study, erythrocyte, saliva, and serum arginase activity together with serum urea and estrogen levels were examined in Akkaraman and Ivesi sheep in pregnancy and postpartum. In this study, the sensory properties and shelf life of fish balls prepared from carp flesh were investigated. Four study groups were prepared with different combinations of ingredients: garlic, garlic-sunflower oil, onion and onion-sunflower oil. A control group was also prepared. At the end of the sensory evaluation, the groups received between 7.4 and 9.07 points from the panelists regarding appearance, texture, succulence, odour and flavour and general acceptance. This study examined the effects of egg weight and storage time on egg weight loss and hatchability traits. Egg were stored for 1, 3, 5. 7. 9 and 11 days, and collected into 3 egg weight groups (light, medium and heavier). Storage room temperature was 18-20°C and relative humidity was 55-58%. Eggs were weighted individually at laying, before placing into hatching, on days 5, 10, 14 and 18 of the hatching period to determine egg weight loss. In this study, proteolitic enzym activities searched on fillets and organs of brined and salted ringa ( Clupea harengus ), frozen Sebastes marinus and fresh cod ( Gadus morrhua ) with using Catepsin D (mg Tyrosin/L -1 ) and Casein (unit/mg) tests. At the end of the study proteolytic enzym activity determined with using Catepsin D on studied fishs, was higher than the proteolitic enzym activity determined with using Casein test. The objective of this study was to estimate heritability (h^2), a useful criterion, in the improvement studies which would be conducted to improve milk productivity in the Karacabey State Farm. A total of 760 cows, of which milk yield records were used in the study in different lactation period, consisted of 111 American Browns , 142 American Holsteins , 87 German Browns , 130 Swiss Browns , 83 Holland Holsteins and 207 Karacabey Browns. The use of first carbonification sludge (waste-clay), a waste product of sugar industry, was investigated as a calcium source in quail diets in two consequtive trials. In the first experiment 1260 of 10-day old Japanese quails were used in a period of 45 days, while 432 quails were utilized during the following 24-weeks laying experiment. Ground marble was replaced by the sludge in the experimental diets to supplement the Ca requirements at the rates of 0, 20, 40, 60, 80 and 100 %, respectively.
