Magnetic resonance imaging offers a means of observing the internal structure of the brain where traditional procedures of embedding, sectioning, staining, mounting, and microscopic examination of thousands of sections are not practical. Furthermore, internal structures can be analyzed in their precise quantitative spatial interrelationships, which is difficult to accomplish after the spatial distortions often accompanying histological processing. For these reasons, magnetic resonance imaging makes specimens that were traditionally difficult to analyze, more accessible. In the present study, images of the brain of a white whale (Beluga) Delphinapterus leucas were scanned in the coronal plane at 119 antero-posterior levels. Fromthese scans, …

Thirty, one-day-old broilers were divided into 3 groups, 10 birds each. Group 1 was vaccinated twice with a live infectious bronchitis virus vaccine, (IBV)-serotype Massachusetts, strain H120 when one day old and a live IBV-strain Massachusetts vaccine when ten days old. Group 2 was vaccinated once with a live IBV-strain Massachusetts vaccine when ten days old. Group 3 were non-vaccinated controls. Blood samples were taken from birds on days 1, 10, 21, 28, 35 and 42. Immunohistochemical Detection Of Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis In A Cat, Nopadon Pirarat, Yumi Une, Yasuo Nomura

A female, 10-month old, mixed breed cat showed clinical signs of severe dehydration, purulent nasal discharge, dyspnea, severe crepitating lung sounds and no response to antibiotic treatment. Upon necropsy, histopathology revealed severe, diffuse, fibrinopurulent pleuropneumonia and numerous, homogeneous, amphophilic, intranuclear inclusion bodies in the pulmonary alveolar macrophages, bronchial and alveolar epithelium and bronchial glandular epitheliums. Immunohistochemical studies using 3 different monoclonal, anti-Feline Herpesvirus type 1 antibodies, revealed immunoreactivity of viral antigen in the lung that was associated with the histopathological changes. Monoclonal, anti-glycoprotein B, antibody showed the strongest immunoreactivity.

The objective of this study is to review the information regarding the development of puberty in gilts and how it influences subsequent reproductive performance such an understanding can be used to improve mating efficiency in gilts. The percentage of gilts in a herd strongly influences overall productivity. The first management decision that has to be made about gilts entering the breeding herd, is the timing of the first breeding. This largely depends on when puberty develops. Puberty in gilts is defined as the time when the first oestrus and ovulation occurs followed by regular oestrous cycles. On average, gilts attain …

This study was conducted in 78 dairy cows(50 repeat breeders and 28 normal cows, with no history of breeding difficulty) from 6 livestock regions of Thailand. Observations were made on the lesions of granular vulvitis and bacteriology performed in order to isolate Ureaplasma diversum. Swabs were taken from 3 sites; the clitoral fossa, the dorsal vulva lips and the external cervical osteum. The isolation of U. diversum was carried out using Taylor Robinson Medium. Infected-cell protein 0 encoded by bovine herpesvirus 1 (BHV-1) (bICP0) is necessary for efficient productive infection, in large part, because it activates all 3 classes of BHV-1 genes (U. V. Wirth, C. Fraefel, B. Vogt, C. Vlcek, V. Paces, and M. Schwyzer, J. Virol. 66:2763–2772, 1992). Although bICP0 is believed to be a functional homologue of herpes simplex virus type 1-encoded ICP0, the only well-conserved domain between the proteins is a zinc ring finger located near the amino terminus of both proteins. Bovine herpesvirus 1 (BHV-1) is an important pathogen of cattle, and infection is usually initiated in the ocular or nasal cavity. Like other alphaherpesviruses, BHV-1 establishes latency in sensory neurons but has the potential of reactivating from latency and spreading. The only abundant viral transcript expressed during latency is the latency-related (LR) RNA, which is alternatively spliced in trigeminal ganglia during acute infection (L. R. Devireddy and C. Forty-seven cutaneous mast cell tumors from dogs were pathologically classified into three grades numbered grade 1 to 3. Age, sex, breed, tumor location, and their histologic grading were tabulated. Luna’s method, Unna’s method, Giemsa, toluidine blue, and alcian blue/safranine stainings were applied in order to compare the diagnosis and prognosis of the tumors. The staining was positive for mast cell tumors by the different methods 64% (30/47), 68% (32/47), 70% (33/47), 72% (34/47), and 81% (38/47), respectively. Two yearling swamp buffalo (Bubalus bubalis) calves, one male and one female, were used for measuring their carotid blood pressure by the classic Stephen Hales method. The animals were premedicated with xylazine hydrochloride followed by intravenous guaifenesin-thiopental. The systolic blood pressure in the male calf was 145.7 mmHg, while the Statham transducer showed 150 mmHg. The pressure in the female calf was 136.2 mmHg and 140 mmHg by the Stephen Hales and electronic methods, respectively.

Opportunistic Vibrios In Cultured Taiwanese Soft-Shelled Turtles (Pelodiscus Sinensis), Channarong Rodkhum, Jaennuj Wongtavatchai, Win Surachetpong, Olarn Tonweerapongsiri, Suparp Kumlungpeat, Jirasak Tangtrongpiros

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

One hundred clinically healthy Taiwanease soft-shelled turtles (Pelodiscus sinensis) were sampled by blood sampling and cloacal swabing. Samples were first cultured in a pre-enrichment media and then selective isolation was performed for vibrios on Thiosulfate-Citrate-Bile salts-Sucrose agar (TCBS). Species of the isolated vibrios were identified by standard biochemical procedures. A total of 146 vibrio isolates were found in 83 out of 100 cloacal swabs (83%), whereas none were found in the 50 blood samples. Isolates were identified as Vibrio fluvialis (26.04%), V. anguillarum (21.23%), V. furnissii (18.49%), V. parahaemolyticus (18.49%), Vibrio spp. (6.85%), V. damsela (5.48%) and V. metschnikovii (3.42%). …

Direct and indirect arterial blood pressure measurements, by the oscillometric method, were carried out on twelve anesthetized healthy tigers during claw amputation. There were seven males and five females aged (mean ± SD) 4 ± 1 months and weighing (mean ± SD) 18 ± 11 kg. Anesthesia was induced using intramuscular ketamine, in conjunction with xylazine and atropine sulphate, and maintained by halothane inhalation. Bacteria of the genus Mycobacterium are gram-positive, acid- fast organisms that include a number of significant human and animal pathogens. Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis (basonym M. paratuberculosis) is the etiological agent of a severe gastroenteritis in ruminants, known as Johne’s disease. H. A. Johne and L. Frothingham initially reported the disease in Germany in 1894. However, it was not until 1910 that F. W. Trowt successfully fulfilled Koch’s postulates by growing M. paratuberculosis in the laboratory and reproducing the disease in experimentally infected cattle (46, 148). The Treatment Of Canine Demodicosis With The Oral Application Of Ivermectin, Nuvee Prapasarakul, Nlin Arya, Chaiyot Tarnrattana, Supote Methiyapun, Manop Muaungyai

Canine demodicosis was treated with Ivermectin (Ivomec®) given orally at a dosage of 0.6 mg/kg to seven dogs. Three of the dogs were from a city pound, the others were privately owned. Six dogs had generalized lesions and one had localized ones. A complete blood count and their biochemical profiles were monitored each month. After treatment, the dogs recovered and had no demodectic mange in the multiple skin scrapings. The duration of treatment was 5-9 weeks (mean= 6.7 weeks). No adverse drug effects were seen during treatment and all blood values remained within the normal range.

Chromosomal Studies On A Bull With A Congenitally Abnormal Urethra, Duangsmorn Suwattana, Weerapong Koykul, Vivat Chavananikul

A six-year old bull (Bos indicus) was found to have hypospadia (congenital rupture of the ventral aspect of the penile urethra). The testes were a normal size and the penis slightly hypoplastic. Karyotype obtained from the conventional staining of chromosomes and GTG- and RBA- bandings revealed a normal make-up, of 60 XY male chromosomes. The levels of serum testoterone, estradiol and progesterone were all within the normal range. Based on the phenotypic abnormality and the karyotypic findings, this bull can be classified as a male, pseudohermaphrodite.

The Role Of Porcine Reproductive And Respiratory Syndrome Virus (Prrsv) In The Porcine Respiratory Disease Complex (Prdc), Roongroje Thanawongnuwech

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

Concurrent bacterial infections of the respiratory tract in porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV)-infected pigs is a major problem for the swine industry and may involve various factors. This review manuscript discusses the role of pulmonary macrophages, which are affected by PRRSV. The macrophage's phagocytic and bactericidal ability is altered by the PRRSV infection as is pulmonary clearance. PRRSV also induces apoptosis and macrophages cell lysis leading to an increased susceptibility to secondary bacterial infection, and the syndrome called porcine respiratory disease complex (PRDC). Prevention and control strategies for these concurrent infections are briefly discussed.

The objective of this study was to determine the reproductive efficiency of lactating dairy cows by using a synchronized ovulation program (Ovsynch). Multiparous, crossbred, Holstein-Friesian cows (40-70 d postpartum; n=60) were divided into a control group (n=30) and an Ovsynch group (n=30), according to their calving dates. Cows in the control group were artificially inseminated according to the AM/PM rule following the detection of standing estrus. This paper reports surgical resection of a dentigerous cyst from a thoroughbred colt that had persistent seromucous discharge through a small opening at the base of the right pinna for one month.Healing was uneventful after the cyst, as well as the fistulous tract, was totally removed. Objective—To determine whether Mycobacterium bovis can be transmitted from experimentally infected deer to uninfected in-contact deer.

Animals—Twenty-three 6-month-old white-tailed deer.

Procedure—On day 0, M bovis (2 X 108 colony-forming units) was administered by intratonsillar instillation to 8 deer; 3 control deer received saline (0.9% NaCl) solution. Eight in-contact deer were comingled with inoculated deer from day 21. On day 120, inoculated deer were euthanatized and necropsied. A 30% decrease in osmolarity stimulated 3H-taurine, 3H-GABA and glutamate (followed as 3H-D-aspartate) efflux from rat hippocampal slices. 3H-taurine efflux was activated rapidly but inactivated slowly. It was decreased markedly by 100 μM 5-nitro-(3-phenylpropylamino) benzoic acid (NPPB) and 600 μM niflumic acid and inhibited strongly by tyrphostins AG18, AG879 and AG112 (25–100 μM), suggesting a tyrosine kinase-mediated mechanism. Hyposmolarity activated the mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPK) extracellular-signal-related kinase-1/2 (ERK1/ERK2) and p38, but blockade of this reaction did not affect 3H-taurine efflux. Hyposmosis also activated phosphatidyl-inositide 3-kinase (PI3K) and its prevention by wortmannin (100 nM) essentially abolished …

In the summer of 1996, we screened 18,931 calves in 128 beef herds located in five US states for persistent bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) infection. Of these, 76 herds were randomly selected from the client database of collaborating veterinary practices, and 52 herds were suspected by the collaborating veterinarians to have BVDV infection based on history or clinical signs. Serum was obtained from each calf in the cooperating herds prior to 4 months of age and tested for the presence of BVDV by microtiter virus isolation. Septicemia Associated With Stenotrophomonas Maltophilia In A West African Dwarf Crocodile (Osteolaemus Tetraspis Subsp. Tetraspis), N. Beth Harris, Douglas G. Rogers

A 17-year-old male captive West African dwarf crocodile (Osteolaemus tetraspis subsp. tetraspis) died 1 month after fighting with a penmate. Abrasions were present on the head and mandible. Necropsy revealed a vegetative valvular lesion of the left atrioventricular valve, miliary foci of necrosis in the endocardium and myocardium, multiple duodenal and rectal ulcers, and serous atrophy of body fat. Stenotrophomonas maltophilia was isolated in pure culture from lung, liver, and kidney. Gram-negative bacilli were seen histologically in the valvular lesion and in foci of necrosis in the myocardium, liver, spleen, pancreas, kidney, and intestine. Septic thrombi in multiple …
