The aims of this study were to determine the possible cross-resistance and horizontal gene transfer associated with halquinol in Escherichia coli and Salmonella spp. from pigs. Two of each E. coli and Salmonella isolates exhibiting low halquinol MIC (8 and 16 µg/ml, respectively) and susceptible to antibiotics tested were selected for in vitro stepwisehalquinol exposure experiment. Another E. coli (n=19) and Salmonella (n=6) isolates with high halquinol MICs (16-64 and 32-64 µg/ml, respectively) containing plasmids were used for transferability testing of halquinol resistanceencoding gene(s) using filter mating method. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV), porcine parvovirus (PPV), and porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2) infections associated with fetal losses in 10 commercial swine herds in Thailand. Samples were collected from 100 sows and included 25 aborted fetuses, 35 mummified fetuses, and 40 stillborn piglets. The average parity number of the sows was 2.8 ± 2.4, ranging from 0 to 11. Pigs are the only mammalian livestock species encoding functional proteins for the second form of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH-II) and its receptor (GnRHR-II). In the first study, GnRHR-II localized to developing germ cells and the connecting piece of ejaculated spermatozoa. Concurrently, GnRH-II was most abundantly produced in the testis compared with other reproductive tract organs and was present within seminal plasma. Moreover, treatment of extended semen with GnRHR-II analogues altered sperm motility, morphology, and kinematics. External jugular vein blood collection is common in gilts and sows, but continuous sampling for hormonal and pharmacokinetic research requires catheterization. The standard protocol has remained largely unchanged for nearly 40 years. This study aimed to develop a modified external jugular vein catheterization technique in gilts. Ten gilts (72.0 ± 3.4 kg) underwent surgery under general anesthesia after 12-hour fasting. Sedation was induced with intramuscular Xylazine (4.4 mg/kg) and Tiletamine–Zolazepam (2.2 mg/kg), followed by intravenous Thiopental sodium (10 mg/kg). Replication of porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2), an important worldwide swine pathogen, has been demonstrated to be influenced by host genotype. Specifically, a missense DNA polymorphism (SYNGR2 p.Arg63Cys) within the SYNGR2 gene was demonstrated to contribute to variation in PCV2b viral load and subsequent immune response following infection. True hermaphrodites are animals with both male and female gonads that have concurrently developed in the same individual. The incidence of true hermaphroditism is moderately higher in pigs than in other domestic animals. The aim of this study was to describe the genital organs of gilts culled due to anestrus with true hermaphrodites by gross and histological analysis. The study was performed to investigate the antimicrobial susceptibility of L. intracellularis field isolates from Korean pig farms. The novel four field isolates successfully obtained from clinical cases were prepared in IEC-18 cells to conduct the in vitro antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) by determining minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC)s; either intracellular (InMIC) or extracellular MICs (ExMIC). The final MICs were assessed by counting the number of heavily infected cells (HICs;> 30 bacteria per cell) using an immunoperoxidase monolayer assay. Senecavirus A (SVA) has been associated with several outbreaks of vesicular disease (VD) since 2014 in major swine-producing countries around the world. The virus causes VD that is clinically indistinguishable from foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) in pigs. Currently there are no commercial vaccines available for SVA. Here, we developed a live attenuated SVA strain by mutating a wild type SVA strain SD15-26 (wt SVA). The live attenuated virus, rSVA mSacII, replicated less efficiently in cell cultures in vitro and expressed lower amounts of VP1 and VP2 capsid proteins than wt SVA. This study was conducted to detect polymorphisms of BPI gene exon 10 by PCR-RFLP in Meishan pigs and their associations with some important cytokine levels (IL-1ß, IL-4, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, TGF-1ß, IFN-γ, TNF-α) and reproductive traits (total number born (TNB), number born alive (NBA), birth litter weight (BLW), and weaning litter weight (WLW)), with the aim of identifying effective genetic markers for molecular breeding. This study aimed to determine plasmid profile of E. faecium and E. faecalis isolated from pigs, pig products and humans in Thailand-Laos border provinces. A total of 96 Enterococcus spp. including E. faecium (n=59) and E. faecalis (n=37) from pigs, pork and humans were included. All were determined for their antimicrobial susceptibilities and plasmid profile. Most isolates (96.9%) carried one to four plasmids with a molecular weight of 0.03-35 kb in E. faecium and 19-40 kb in E. faecalis. The 26 kb plasmid was most commonly detected. To evaluate the effects of the adiponectin (ADIPOQ) gene on porcine litter size, we investigated ADIPOQ polymorphisms in three breeds, Wannan Black pigs, Berkshire pigs, and BW pigs (crossbred pigs produced from mating male Berkshire pigs and female Wannan Black pigs), using the PCR-SSCP method. Sapoviruses (SaVs) are emerging enteric pathogens that cause diarrhea in humans and animals. In the current study, genetic identification of sapovirus (SaV) in suckling piglets was investigated in Hunan province, China between May 2013 and May 2014. Diarrheic fecal (n=300) samples collected from suckling piglets in Hunan province, China were evaluated using RT-PCR and then sequenced. Overall, 45 of the 300 (15%) samples were found to contain porcine SaV. In addition, phylogenetic analysis showed that all the porcine SaV isolates belonged to the porcine SaV genogroup III (GIII). In order to find alternative feed additives to replace antibiotics for safe animal production, combinations of probiotics, oligosaccharides, and berberine were used in this study. Ninety 60-day-old pigs were assigned to 9 groups, with 10 pigs for each group. Group 1 was the control, group 2 had antibiotics added, and groups 3-9 had different levels of combinations added. The experimental period was 60 days. Porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2) causes multisystemic diseases called porcine circovirus associated disease (PCVAD) in pigs leading to a significant economic loss in the swine industry. The objective of this study was to determine the efficacy of a developed sub-unit PCV2b vaccine using a recombinant truncated capsid protein expressed in Escherichia coli in PCVAD-affected pig farms. The present study investigated the association among serum insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I), backfatthickness, and age at first observed estrus in replacement gilts. In total, 80 replacement gilt, Landrace (L, n = 48) andYorkshire (Y, n = 32), were included. The gilts were determined for age at first observed estrus between 167 to 212days of age. This study was designed to evaluate the effect of oxytocin treatment at the time of insemination on fertility and prolificacy of sows during the summer season (July and September). The study included 107 Polish Large White × Polish Landrace sows divided into 3 groups: C, control (without oxytocin); I, experimental (5 IU oxytocin administrated intramuscularly per sow, 2 min before insemination); and II, experimental (5 IU of oxytocin added into a 100-mL seminal dose, at the time of insemination). The palatine tonsils of 220 pigs were examined for the occurrence of Streptococcus suis and other Streptococcus species. Samples were cultured onto Colombia agar plates with 5% defibrinated horse blood and selective antibiotic supplement and were incubated at 37 °C for 24-48 h aerobically. Presumptive colonies were identified using API20 Strep (bioMérieux). S. suis was not detected in any of the 220 palatine tonsils examined. S. porcinus was the most common streptococcus recovered and was isolated from 68 (31%) pigs. In Thailand, some breeders in pig farms have had osteoarthritis lesions for which M. hyosynoviae might be one of the causative agents. Therefore, the semi-nested polymerase chain reaction assay was developed for detection of Mycoplasma hyosynoviae in organs of pigs in Thailand using three oligonucleotide primers specific to 16S rRNA gene of M. hyosynoviae. The detection limit of purified DNA was 10 femtogram per reaction and of the simulated lung sample was 103 CFU per gram of sample. The present study aims to investigate a suitable L-cysteine level to be added the lactose-egg yolk (LEY) extender to improve the quality of boar semen after freezing-thawing using Annexin-V and propidium iodide (PI) assay detected with flow cytometer. Ejaculates from twelve boars were processed in the LEY extender and added with 0, 5, 10 and 15 mM of L-cysteine. The present study investigated the influence of four different commercial semen extenders used during theholding time and the use of seminal plasma as a thawing medium on the frozen-thawed (FT) boar semen quality.Sperm-rich fractions were collected from 11 boars and were divided into four groups according to the type of semenextender used during the holding time (A, B, C and D).
