Egg Yield And Hatchability Characteristics Of Native Geese In The Kars Region, Cavi̇t Arslan, Mustafa Saatci

The egg production and incubation traits of native Turkish geese bred in the Kars region were examined in two separate trials. In the first trial, 100 female (70 one-year-old and 30 two-year-old) and 40 (two-year-old) male geese were used. The geese were divided into 20 groups. In each group there were five females and two males. Group feeding was used during the experiment. One-and 2-year-old geese laid 8.10 and 12.25 eggs/year, respectively. Egg weight, feed consumption, fertility rate, and hatching rate of 1- and 2-year-old geese were 128.85 and 148.15 g, 136.38 and 159.83 g/day, 42.54 and 47.25% and 9.38 …

The aim of the present study was to determine the accumulation of cadmium in different tissues of Tilapia nilotica and to establish the influence of this accumulation on total protein levels in liver and kidney tissues. At the end of each experimental period; gill, liver and kidney tissues from the animals were dissected and their cadmium accumulation was determined using atomic absorbtion spectrophotometry. Liver and kidney tissues were homogenised to determine total protein levels. The protein contents of the tissue homogenates were determined by the Lowry method. Reproduction Of The Silverbelly (Leiognathus Klunzingeri Steindachner, 1898) In Yumurtalık Bight (Adana), Turkey, Meltem Özütok, Dursun Avşar

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

This present study was performed to identify reproductive peculiarities of the silverbelly (Leiognathus klunzingeri) in Yumurtalık Bight. For this purpose, 430 individuals were obtained by monthly sampling between October 1997 and September 1998 and then they were examined. By using the monthly changes in the mean values of the Gonadosomatic Index (GSI) and Fulton's Condition Factor (K), we found that reproduction period occurred between July and September, length at first maturity was 5.8 cm and 5.5 cm for males and females, respectively, egg diameter was between 0.8 and 1.0 mm and mean annual fecundity was 2789 ± 2109.

This study examined the effect of adaptation to acid on the survival of Salmonella typhimurium in mayonnaise, turnip juice and ayran (a drink made of yogurt and water). S. typhimurium was adapted to acid by exposure to hydrochloric acid at pH 5.8. Commercially available mayonnaise (pH 3.7), turnip juice (pH 3.1) and ayran (pH 4.2) were inoculated with acid adapted or nonadapted cells of S. typhimurium (2 x 10^6 cfu/ml). The Effect Of Different Rations On Some Rumen Fluid And Blood Parameters In Sheep, Taylan Aksu, Suphi̇ Deni̇z

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of different combinations of energy (barley and dried molassed sugar beet pulp (DMSBP)) and protein sources (soybean meal (SBM), cotton-seed meal (CSM), SBM-treated with formaldehyde (FTSBM), CSM-treated with formaldehyde (FTCSM), and urea) on some rumen fluid and blood parameters. In this study, four rumen fistulated Morkaraman rams were used. Rumen pH values were around the optimal pH values suggested for rumen fluid (5.2-7.3) at all sampling times. Ruminal NH_3-N concentrations were significantly greater (P < 0.05) in animals fed DMSBP as an energy source compared with animals fed barley as an energy source and were between 10.4 and 32.75 mg/100 ml in all groups. Formaldehyde treatments of protein sources reduced ruminal NH_3-N concentrations in animals fed DSBP as an energy source (P < 0.05). Acetic and propionic acid concentrations were affected by the energy source, although butyric acid concentrations were significantly higher in animals fed groups containing barley than in animals fed groups containing DMSBP. Formaldehyde treatment did not affect propionic acid concentrations, although propionic acid concentrations were generally significantly higher (P < 0.05) in animals fed barley + SBM combinations compared to treatments containing both SBM and CSM combinations (P < 0.05). Serum total protein concentrations were affected by the energy source and these were higher in groups containing DMSBP than in groups containing barley (P < 0.05). However, serum urea-N concentrations were similar among the different diets.

In this study, the clinical signs of hepatorenal syndrome that occurs during hepatic cirrhosis were investigated and a variety of diagnosis and therapy methods were investigated in the experimentally ligated bile ducts of dogs. This study was carried out to investigate the growth of some testis characteristics of Norduz male kids reared at the Agricultural Farm of Yüzüncü Yıl University. The data were obtained from 22 Norduz male kids weaned at 3 months of age. The male kids were maintained in farm conditions. In this study, the isolation of Staphylococcus aureus from dairy desserts, and its thermonuclease activity and enterotoxigenic properties were investigated. A total of 175 samples were analyzed consisting of 100 pudding samples (sütlaç [rice pudding] 25, keşkül [milk pudding containing coconut] 30, supangile [chocolate pudding] 25, kazandibi [milk pudding slightly burned on the bottom] 20) and 75 cream pastries (butter-cream 25, chocolate-cream 25, fruit-cream 25). A female, grey, 24-year-old horse was showing clinical signs of weight loss, ataxia, hersutism, high fever, dysuria, nasal discharge and moist rale lung sounds. Gross examination revealed a single, white, firm, pituitary mass with a diameter 2.5 x 2.1 x 1.5 cm, compressed and overlying the hypothalamus. Histopathological and immunohistochemical examinations revealed the characteristic of a ACTH-derived pituitary adenoma.

The retrospective study of 30 cases records using formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded intestines, from Feline Panleukopenia (FPL) infected cats using histopathological criteria as seen by the Department of Pathology, Faculty of Veterinary Sciences, Chulalongkorn University between 1997-2001, was undertaken. The objective of the study was to examine FPLV infection in feline intestines showing characteristic lesions of parvovirus enteritis and to describe the relationship between the intestinal microscopic lesions of FPL in affected cats, with the location of FPL antigens, using immunohistochemical methods. A study was carried out on the invasion of Guppy skin by Tetrahymena spp. after various types of skin injury. Three types of skin injuries, scale removal, brush scratching and acetic acid irritation were performed. Tetrahymena spp. only the acetic acid irritation method allowed to invade the damaged skin. Guppy skin using this method, the fish caudal fin was covered with a 10%, acetic acid soaked, cotton strip for three minutes and exposed to water containing Tetrahymena spp. for 24 hours. The first commercial farm in Thailand to culture Abalone was studied to approve sanitation and food safety. Water quality and bacterial contamination criteria in both water from culturerelated sources and Abalone prior to marketing was examined. The water quality and bacteria found in the water samples (total aerobic plate, Vibrio count and MPN total coliforms) indicated the culturing practices adhere to the standards for shellfish sanitation. Total coliforms and other bacteria found in the Abalone samples also complied with microbiological guidelines for seafood products. The Determination Of Serum Copper And Zinc Concentrations In Thoroughbred Foals And Their Dams After Parturition, Achara Tawatsin, Panumas Ruantongdee, Prachak Poomvises

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

Serum copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn) concentrations in 5-35 thoroughbred foals and their dams during first 24 weeks after parturition were determined. Mean serum Cu in foals increased significantly (p < 0.01) with age, from 10.4±1.1 μmol/l at week 1 to 25.9±0.8 μmol/l at week 24, whereas those in mares decreased significantly p < 0.05, from 26.2±1.3 μmol/l at week 1 to 22.0±0.5 μmol/l at week 24 after parturition. There was a large negative correlation between the mean serum Cu concentrations in foals and their dams (r = -0.86, p < 0.01). Serum Zn concentrations in both foals and mares on the other hand, gradually decreased after parturition, ranging from and 17.7±0.3 μmol/l at week-1 to 13.8±0.5 μmol/l at week 24, in foals and from 16.2±1.2 μmol/l at week 1 to 14.4±0.5 μmol/l at week 24 in mares. The correlation coefficient between the mean serum Zn concentrations in foals and their mares was high (r = 0.895, p < 0.01).

Abalone are high cost seafoods regarded as delicacy. The decline of world abalone fishery has initiated the development of cultured abalone production in some countries. Thailand possesses geographical areas which are suitable for abalone habitats and the commercial abalone farming is currently promoted by the government. Commercial fishery for abalone in Thailand are presently unfamiliarity of their biology. This report describes the basis biology of abalone, development of abalone culture in tropical regions; selection and management of broodstock, in tank spawning, rearing of larvae through grow-out culture of advanced juveniles, to meet the requirement of consumers' seafood standard.

The objective of this review is to update information concerning the function of seminal plasma on the pig reproductive system, as well as its importance in artificial insemination (AI). It has been shown that seminal plasma advances ovulation in gilts by an average time of 10-14 hours, improves sperm motility, sustaines sperm viability during uterine transport, suppresses immune activities (chemotaxis of neutrophils), improved sperm transport, improves fertilisation rate, improves litter size in gilts and indirectly enhances fertility. The hormone estrogen, within the seminal plasma, causes a release of prostaglandins from the pigs endometrium to the utero-ovarian veins and lymphatic vessels. …

In this study we used magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to investigate neuroanatomical structure in the brain of a white whale (Delphinapterus leucas) that died from a large tumor within the brainstem. This specimen was also compared with a normal white whale brain using MRI. MRI scans of the white whale specimen show how the tumor deformed surrounding brain structure. Histopathological analysis indicated a poorly differentiated carcinoma of uncertain origin. These analyses demonstrate the usefulness of supplementing histological analyses of pathology with studies of gross morphology facilitated by MRI.

In this study, magnetic resonance (MR) images of the brain of an adult common dolphin (Delphinus delphis) were acquired in the coronal plane at 66 antero-posterior levels. From these scans a computer-generated set of resectioned virtual images in orthogonal planes was constructed using the programs VoxelView and VoxelMath (Vital Images, Inc., Michigan State Univ.). Sections in all three planes reveal major neuroanatomical structures. These structures in the adult common dolphin brain are compared with those from a fetal common dolphin brain from a previously published study as well as with MR images of adult brains of other odontocetes. …

Although experimental and clinical evidence suggest that endogenous sex hormones influence bone sarcoma genesis, the hypothesis has not been adequately tested in an appropriate animal model. We conducted a historical cohort study of Rottweiler dogs because they frequently undergo elective gonadectomy and spontaneously develop appendicular bone sarcomas, which mimic the biological behavior of the osteosarcomas that affect children and adolescents. Data were collected by questionnaire from owners of 683 Rottweiler dogs living in North America. Immune mechanisms mediating protective immunity against porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) are not well understood. The PRRSV-specific humoral immune response has been dismissed as being ineffective and perhaps deleterious for the host. The function of PRRSV antibodies in protective immunity against infection with a highly abortifacient strain of this virus was examined by passive transfer experiments in pregnant swine. All of a group of pregnant gilts (n = 6) that received PRRSV immunoglobulin (Ig) from PRRSV-convalescent, hyperimmune animals were fully protected from reproductive failure as judged by 95% viability of offspring at weaning (15 days of age). …

The present invention relates generally to molecular compounds which encode the protective M-like protein of Streptococcus equi (SeM), the amino acid compound which is thereby encoded, and compositions of matter which incorporate either the encoding compounds or the cellular components for which they encode. For instance, vaccines which utilize the amino acid compounds or vectors and cell lines useful to make the amino acid compounds described herein are subjects of the present invention. NAD(H)-dependent L-alanine dehydrogenase (EC 1.4.1.1) (Ald) catalyzes the oxidative deamination of L-alanine and the reductive amination of pyruvate. To assess the physiological role of Ald in Mycobacterium smegmatis, we cloned the ald gene, identified its promoter, determined the protein expression levels, and analyzed the combined effects of nutrient supplementation, oxygen availability, and growth stage on enzyme activity. High Ald activities were observed in cells grown in the presence of L- or D-alanine regardless of the oxygen availability and growth stage. In exponentially growing cells under aerobic conditions, supplementation with alanine resulted in a 25- to 50-fold increase in the …

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

The application of a Reverse Transcriptase-Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-PCR) on 37 canine distemper cases was performed by the amplification of the nucleo-capsid gene derived from the canine distemper virus or CDV-infected mononuclear cells (PBMCs). The animals were divided into 2 groups according to their clinical signs. The first group of animals showed signs of distemper, such as respiratory and/or digestive signs. The second group showed the same signs as first group but with nervous involvements. The findings revealed that 74.1% (20/27) of group 1 tested positive with the RT-PCR assay compared to 60% (6/10) of group 2. These results suggested …
