The effects of replacing corn in the diets of laying hens with 100% barley containing different enzymes as an energy source on different yields and egg quality traits were investigated in this study. A total of 300 laying hens (average 22 weeks of age) were used. The study was carried out with five groups, 2 controls (60% corn, 60% barley) and 3 experimental groups. The Effect Of Sodium And Potassium Nitrate On The Quality Of Turkish Pastrami (Pastırma) During Production, Yusuf Doğruer, Ahmet Güner, Ümi̇t Gürbüz, Gürkan Uçar

Different ratios of sodium and potassium nitrate were added to salt (control, 1, 2 and 3%) during the salting process and its effect on the chemical and microbiological quality was investigated in different stages of Turkish pastrami (pastırma) production (before and after salting, and before and after cumin paste application). According to the chemical analysis results, the moisture and salt ratio, pH and a_w values were not significantly different between the groups (P > 0.05) but the nitrate and nitrite values were significantly different according to the nitrate ratio (P < 0.05). Before the salting of samples, Staphyococcus/Micrococcus numbers were significantly different between the groups (P < 0.05). To determine the relationship between biochemical parameters and production traits in sheep, 111 sheep raised in Bandırma Sheep Research Institute were used as living material. Blood samples of 31 Hampshire Down x Merino, 33 Dorset Down x Merino, 27 German Black Headed x Merino and 20 Border Leicester x Merino crosses were taken. In this study, organ and tissue samples were collected for routine histopathological examinations and also for the detection and definitive diagnosis of Marek's disease (MD) viral antigens by the Labeled StreptAvidin-Biotin Peroxidase (LSAB) method during post-mortem examinations of dead or sacrificed hens. We investigated the effect of hypothyroidism caused by thyroidectomy on the sexual cycle and pregnancy rates in rats. Twenty female rats were divided into two groups. The thyroid glands were totally extirpated in the first group (n = 10). An operation was performed but the thyroid glands were not extirpated in the second group (n = 10). In both groups, the differences in vaginal cytology were examined daily with vaginal irrigation, for 1 month starting 3 days after the operation. In this research the fatty acid composition of different tissues of mature trout caught from Yeşildere creek in the Fırat region were investigated. In the adipose, gonad, liver and muscle tissues, the differences among the percentages of monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA), polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3, n-6 PUFA) and the eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA)/decosahexaenoic acid (DHA) ratio were statistically significant (P < 0.01). However, the differences in the saturated fatty acids (SFA) of tissues were not distinctive. The most important fatty acids were palmitic (16:0), stearic (18:0) and miristic (14:0) in SFA and 18:1 n-9 and 16:1 n-7 in MUFA. The ratio of n3/n6, known as characteristic agents of marine fish, was as high as in marine fish but the differences among the tissues were not significant.

This study aimed to examine the effects of different packaging methods on some quality criteria of marinated fish. The heads and bones of the fish studied were removed and the fish were filleted. Then they were placed in brine for marination. The aim of this study was to compare the efficacy of autogenous, species-specific and herd-specific vaccination in the treatment of bovine papillomatosis. This study was performed on 24 female Holstein cattle aged between 8 and 17 months in the same herd. The animals were divided into three vaccination groups (eight cattle in each group) as autogenous, species-specific and herd-specific. The stomach contents of 122 common carp (Cyprinus carpio L., 1758) individuals collected from lakes Tatlı and Gıcı between January 2000 and December 2000 were investigated. The Geometric Index of Importance (GII) was used to determine food preferences among individuals and to assess whether these preferences were age based. It was concluded that the diet preferences of the common carp were not dependent on age and comprise a wide variety of food items present in their natural habitat. This study aimed at an examination of the effects of different housing systems on the body weight, serum calcium levels, digit lengths and various parameters of the humerus and tibiotarsus. For this purpose 40 Tetra SL chickens were kept in caged, aviary, perchery and litter housing systems with 10 animals in each. In this study, we aimed to determine the levels of some biochemical parameters in the seminal plasma of German Shepherd dogs. Seven German Shepherd dogs were used as materials. A total of 35 ejaculates, five from each dog, were collected. The seminal plasma of each ejaculate was separated by centrifugation at 5000 rpm for 10 min. Biochemical analyses of the seminal plasma were performed. In this study, the effect of vitamin E usage (75 days, 45 mg/day of vitamin E (DL-\alpha tocopheryl acetate)) on the myofibrillar proteins in male Morkaraman lamb meat was investigated. SDS-PAGE gels indicated that vitamin E supplementation to the diet did not have any effect on actin and myosin; however it had a fractional effect on tropomyosin. For pH values, no differences were observed between the control and vitamin E supplemented groups.

This study was performed to compare the growth characteristics of Kangal and Akbaş Turkish shepherd dogs. Live weight records of 141 puppies at birth, 86 puppies at weaning, 68 puppies at 6 and 12 months of age and four different body measurements of 68 dogs at different ages were used for determining growth characteristics. The least squares method was used for statistical analysis. A change in the vaccination strategy used in the Central Anatolia region of Turkey to combat the effects of infections with endemic virulent Newcastle disease virus (NDV) in maternally immune birds is described in this retrospective work. Changes in fatty acid composition were investigated during the early development stages (egg, embryo, alevin and fry) of rainbow trout (Oncorhyncus mykiss). It was found that saturated and monounsaturated fatty acids, i.e., 14:0, 16:1n-7 and 18:1n-9, were utilized to a greater extent as energy substrates. Quantities of 18:3n-6, 18:4n-3, 20:2n-6 and 22:5n-3 fatty acids were significantly reduced (P < 0.05) during early development. The most significant depletion was observed in monounsaturated fatty acids, which fell from 33.89% to 23.41% during development while n-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids fell from 16% to 12.9%.

The Effect Of Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus Mykiss Walbaum, 1792) Cage Culture On Benthic Macrofauna In Kesikköprü Dam Lake*, İlknur Karaca, Serap Pulatsü

The aim of this research was to determine the effect of a cage farm with a capacity of about 55 t on the benthic macrofauna in Kesikköprü Dam Lake. At 3 stations (the cage and 15 m and 60 m from the cage) selected for this purpose the abundance and composition of benthic macrofauna were determined for 11 months. The abundance of benthic macrofauna (individuals/m^2) between the stations was statistically significant (P < 0.05). The abundance of benthic macrofauna was higher at the cage station than at the other 2 stations, except in April and November. During the research period the lowest number of individuals (937 individuals/m^2) was found at the second station 15 m from the cage in February; and the highest number (14,091 individuals/m^2) was determined at the cage station in December. Members of the class Pelecypoda were found at all 3 stations. Dreissena, which is a member of the class Pelecypoda, was the most dominant benthic organism (54%), followed by Chrinomus (30%) and Tubifex (11%). At the cage station, while members of the class Pelecypoda were found, no members of the classes Insecta, Oligocheta or Crustacea were found. The highest number of benthic macrofauna genera (7) was found at the station 60 m from the cage in April and November. The lowest number of genera (1) was found at the cage station in July. The results of this study in Kesikköprü Dam Lake reveal that the cage culture has a localizing effect on the abundance and composition of benthic macrofauna.

Glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) was purified from goose erythrocytes and some characteristics of the enzyme were investigated. The purification procedure was composed of 3 steps: hemolysate preparation, ammonium sulfate precipitation, and 2', 5'-ADP Sepharose 4B affinity gel chromatography. Thanks to the 3 consecutive procedures, the enzyme, having a specific activity of 36.2 EU/mg protein, was purified for a yield of 68.79% and 3892 folds; to ascertain enzyme purity, SDS-PAGE was performed. This study investigates the relationship between total length (TL) and fork length (FL), girth (G), height (H) and width (W) of red mullet (Mullus barbatus) (n = 953) and annular sea bream (Diplodus annularis) (n = 944) collected during trawl selectivity trials carried out in İzmir Bay between July 1996 and February 1997. The purpose of this study was to demonstrate the use of the profit function regression model as a decision support tool in commercial broiler production. The fact that the estimated impact factors affecting profitability on the profit per kg live-weight were similar to those observed in the field indicates the power of the model as a decision support tool in broiler production. Because the marginal impact of each independent variable on profit was the estimated coefficient value, they could simply be used to evaluate "what-if scenarios" and the risk of investment under changing circumstances in broiler production. Aortic body tumors were investigated macroscopically and microscopically in a 2-year-old, clinically normal, male cross-breed dog. Two tumor masses measuring 4 x 4 x 3 cm in size were determined. One of them was located on the A. subclavia dextra and the other one was located on the A. carotis communis dextra and they adhered to the adventitia of these vessels. Aflatoxins that are toxic metabolites for human and animals were determined in some fish feed. Eighty-five unit samples taken from "fish farming processes", "feed factories" and "imported feeds" in 1998, 1999 and 2000 were analyzed. In the analysis, thin layer chromatography (TLC) and enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) technique were used. Consequently, aflatoxin levels above 20 ppb were detected in 20 samples and from 21.2 to 42.4 ppb in 85 samples. In 22 samples aflatoxin levels from 5.0 to 20.0 ppb were detected. The aim of this study was to determine the effect on non-specific defence mechanisms in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) fed diets containing different doses of \beta-glucan (MacroGard), Schizosaccharomyces pombe and S. pombe P450. The aim of this study was to standardize the 3 techniques designated as exotoxin ELISA, sonicated ELISA and dot-blot ELISA in the detection of antibodies to Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis in sheep sera and to evaluate the usefulness of these techniques in the routine diagnosis and screening of C. pseudotuberculosis infection. The objective of this study was to determine sorghum varieties that are suitable for north Anatolian conditions and possess high nutrient yields. Eight grain sorghum varieties, namely, Öğretmenoğlu, Akdarı, Aldarı, Beydarı, Ramada, A-298, DK-64 and KS-397, were utilized as plant material in the experiment. When the grains were mature, they were harvested first, and then residues were harvested by hand. Samples were analyzed for dry matter (DM), organic matter (OM), crude protein (CP), neutral detergent fiber (NDF), acid detergent fiber (ADF), and in vitro DM digestibility.
