Hypertrophic Osteodystrophy In The Dog: 18 Cases, Kürşat Özer, Kemal Altunatmaz, Ahmet Gülçubuk

Hypertrophic osteodystrophy was diagnosed in 16 male and 2 female puppies aged between 2.5 and 8 months. All animals had stiff and stilted gait, painful swellings in the metaphyseal areas of the antebrachium and tibia, pyrexia, weakness and diarrhoea as common symptoms. Radiological examination of the affected areas showed extraperiosteal bone proliferations. With chronicity, the new bone formation spanned the entire diaphysis from the distal to the proximal metaphysis. Two dogs were treated with parenteral administration of analgesics, corticosteroids, vitamin C, and antibiotics in addition to dietary management. This work was designed to test the effect of serine and threonine on follicle growth, differentiation and atresia under in vitro and in vivo conditions. Two experiments were conducted. In the first experiment, follicles 90-120 µm in diameter, from 21-day old mice, were dissected mechanically and cultured individually for 7 days. Follicles were subjected to 4 different treatments. Follicles in medium without amino acids and gonadotrophins were assigned as control groups. Because of the interaction between nitric oxide (NO) and the superoxide anion radical, the effect of ischemia-reperfusion on intestinal contractility regulated by the nitrergic system was investigated in the present study. The study was performed on 3 groups of rabbits: group 1, ischemia; group 2, ischemia and 1 h of reperfusion; group 3, ischemia and 24 h of reperfusion. The effects of spatially localized and spatially dispersed feeding patterns on the growth, size distribution and feed conversion ratio of the African catfish were investigated. Two groups of fish with an initial weight of 82.16 ± 4.80 and 82.40 ± 3.90 g were subjected to point source and scatter feeding patterns, respectively, for 2 months. Scatter fed fish reached a final mean weight of 192.69 ± 6.60 g while the mean final weight of point source fed fish was 169.67 ± 6.80 g ( P < 0.05). The specific growth rates of scatter and point source fed fish were 1.51% day^{-1} and 1.29% day^{-1}, respectively. The feed conversion ratio of scatter fed fish was 1.86 and that of point source fed fish was 2.29. The difference between the coefficient of size variation for scatter and point source fed fish was statistically insignificant (P > 0.05). Escherichia coli is the most common bacterium that has been isolated from the bacterial culture of uterine and fecal samples of dogs with pyometra. The aim of the present study was to determine whether this organism could be relevant to the pathogenesis of pyometra in dogs. Fecal and uterine samples were collected from 17 bitches with pyometra. E. coli strains were isolated in all samples. This study was carried out between January 1996 and December 1997 in Kayaboğazı Dam Lake. During this period 424 specimens were examined. The age of females and males ranged from I to VII. The fork length and weight of females and males were 102-277 mm and 15-377.02 g and 125-274 mm and 27-369.02 g, respectively. There was no statistically significant difference between females and males in terms of body length and weight.The sex ratio (male:female) was 0.947:1. This study was conducted during the Engraulis encrasicolus fishing seasons of 1998-1999 and 1999-2000, and some basic characteristics of this population off the Turkish coast of the Black Sea were examined. Weight-length relationships and von Bertalanffy growth equations were estimated as W = 0.0083 L^{2.872} and Lt = 15.66[1 – e^{-0.3368 (t+2.526)}] and W = 0.0076 L^ {2.919} and L t = 17.07 [1 – e^{–0.2836 (t+2.1047)}] for the 1998-1999 and 1999-2000 fishing seasons, respectively. This study was performed to determine the survival of Listeria monocytogenes during the manufacture and ripening of Kashar, a popular cheese in Turkey. This study was performed to evaluate the feasibility of bone injection gun assisted intraosseous administration of contrast media as an alternative to the intravenous route for urography. Intravenous urographies were obtained in 6 rabbits. Urographic examinations by the intraosseous route were performed in the same animals 48 h later. The population structure, mortality and growth of the tench [Tinca tinca (L., 1758)] in Çivril Lake was investigated, using 506 fish caught with various gill nets between February 1998 and January 1999. The percentages of females and males in the population were 38.34% and 61.66%, respectively, and the overall female-male sex ratio was 1:1.61. Specimens ranged from 11.4 to 28.8 cm in fork length, and from 27.7 to 420.4 g in weight. The age distribution was I-V in the population. Some growth properties of the brown trout Salmo trutta macrostigma (Dumeril, 1858) in Tekederesi, which is a branch feeding the Karasu River, were investigated. The age composition of the population varied between I and V. The population was 64.81% female and 35.19% male and the differences between the sexes were statistcally significant (P < 0.05). The mean fork length and mean body weight of the 54 individuals examined were 16.58 cm and 53.15 g, respectively. The differences between the sexes according to age groups for fork length and total weight were not statistically significant (P > 0.05). The specific and relative growth for length and weight were maximum at the second age. The length-weight relationship of the population was calculated by the least squares method and the logarithmic equation was found to be Log W = -1.4684 + 2.590 Log FL (fork length). …

The major aim of this study was to analyze the meat cost per kg live weight and marketing margins of cattle fattening farms in Erzurum province in the 2001 production period. Data were collected from 130 cattle fattening farms and different associations. Cattle fattening farms were classified according to their size into 3 groups using stratified random sampling. In this study, changes in the food component and meat yield in hot smoked tench (Tinca tinca L., 1758) were investigated. The meat yield of tench was calculated as 49.27 ± 0.76%. The Effect Of Gnrh Administration On Plasma Progesterone And Reproductive Performance In Ewes, Mehmet Aki̇f Çam, Mehmet Kuran, Erdoğan Selçuk

Two experiments were carried out to investigate the effect of GnRH administration at mating and on day 12 post-mating on the reproductive performance of Karayaka and Sakız x Karayaka (F_2) crossbred sheep. In the first experiment, ewes were allocated into a control group (K, n = 27), and groups administered 4 µg GnRH at mating (A, n = 27), on day 12 post-mating (AS, n = 30) and both at mating and on day 12 post-mating (AAS, n = 30). GnRH administration in the A and AS groups increased plasma progesterone concentrations (P < 0.01). The pregnancy rate at first mating in the AS group (86.7%) was higher than those in the ASS (66.7%), A (51.9%) and K (51.9%) groups (P < 0.01). There was no difference between the treatment groups in terms of litter sizes (1.31, 1.21, 1.21 and 1.20 for AS, K, A and ASS, respectively). In the second experiment, ewes were allocated into 2 groups, a control group (K, n = 70) and a group administered 4 µg GnRH on day 12 post-mating (AS, n = 73). In this study, the growth and viability status of Listeria monocytogenes were investigated during the ripening and storage period of sucuk (Turkish dry fermented sausage) produced using different lactic acid bacteria (Lactobacillus plantarum Lb 8 and L. plantarum Lb 75, Pediococcus acidilactici Lb 626, P. pentosaceus Lb 1010, L. sakei 706 and L. sakei 706-B). A dead, 9-year-old, female, Variable squirrel, weighing 190 g, had a skin swelling in the left inguinal area. Surgical excision of a similar skin mass in the right inguinal area had taken place 87 days previously. The squirrel had showed signs of severe dyspnea and inappetence for 7 days prior to death. The changes range from rapid fluid and electrolyte shifts which accompany high-intensity exercise (VO2 max ≥ 100%) (i.e., racehorse) to substantial fluid and electrolyte depletion during Speed and Endurance Tests as seen at Three-day events. The hematological values of 50 Siamese Tiger Fish, with an average body length of approximately 30 cm were: hematocrit, 24.4±5.6%, RBC, 4.0±0.9x106 cell/μl. and WBC, 32.4±10.3x103 cell/μl. From a thin blood smear, the results of a differential cell count were: lymphocytes, 85.8±4.6%, monocytes, 10.1±4.2% and granulocytes, 4.1±3.2%. The scanning electron microscope features of the zona pellucida of immature porcine oocytes, preserved in hypertonic salt solution, for 7, 14, 28 and 56 days, were compared with the features of fresh immature oocytes. The outer zona pellucida layer showed two principal patterns. The first showed a network, with a spongy appearance and containing numerous pores, while the other had a more compact and smooth structure, with fewer pores. The objective of this study was to define the coefficients for the calculation of standard milk production and the average daily milk production for the whole lactation, from the milk production measured on one test day. Individual milk production data from a farm, with an average of 45 milking cows, in the Khonkaen province, were collected daily over a period of one year.
