The goal of this study was to generate production indicies for evaluating cow and farm production efficiency. The milk yields from cows on 10 farms in the Khonkaen province were recorded. The data were transformed into a value depicting standard milk production and subsequently calculated to show the average standard milk production of each farm and an average for all farms. These data were used to calculate 2 production indecies: 1) a cow production index, calculated by dividing the cow standard milk production figure with the average standard milk production for the farm, and 2) a herd production index, calculated …

Kidneys from a forty year old, female, Asian elephant (Elephas maximus) were subjected to a gross anatomical study (measurements, dissection, parasagittal sections and photography), histological examination, and ultrasonographic images. The kidney had an elliptical to ovoid shape with a size of 32x21x12 centimeters (length, width, and thickness). It was of multilobar or multipyramidal type, composed of 8 lobes, closely placed and separated by interlobar septae, some of which were perforated by minor interruptions. The expression of the estrogen receptor alpha (ERα) was investigated in domestic cat ovaries and uteri by mean of immunohistochemistry, using monoclonal antibody against ERα. The stages of the oestrous cycle were determined by vaginal cytology and serum steroid levels which were taken before operation. In the uterus, positive staining was found in the nuclei of all uterine cell types in different proportions and staining intensity. During oestrous, the staining intensity and the proportion of positive cells were highest in the epithelium (both the surface epithelium and the glandular epithelium) as well as in the myometrium. First Identification Of Neospora Caninum In Thailand, Than Kyaw, Prachin Virakul, Manop Muangyai, Wijit Banlunara

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

An immunohistochemical examination of aborted bovine tissues, collected from two dairy farms that had a high abortion rate (7%), detected the organism Neospora caninum (NC). Five out of 12 aborting cows (41.7%) were seropositive to NC using a competitive ELISA test. Neospora-tachyzoites were detected in the placenta of a seropositive aborting cow. Neither NC parasites nor cysts were detected in other fetal tissues. The identification of the Neospora-parasite and a high percentage of Neospora seropositive aborting cows, suggested NC as the possible cause of abortion. This is the first identification of the NC parasite in Thailand.

Although cattle are reservoirs, no validated method exists to monitor Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli 0157 (STEC 0157) on farms. In 29 Midwestern United States feedlot pens we compared culturing feces from the individual cattle to: (1) culturing rope devices that cattle rub or chew; and (2) culturing a composite of fecal pats. Eighty-six per cent (68-96 %) of pens were classified correctly using rope devices to detect pens with at least 16 % of the cattle shedding STEC 0 157 [sensitivity = 82 % (57-96 %); specificity = 92 % (62-100 %)]. Dendritic cells (DC) are critical for stimulation of naive T cells. Little is known about the effect of herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2) infection on DC structure or function or if the observed effects of HSV-1 on human DC are reproduced in murine DC. Here, we demonstrate that by 12 h postinfection, wild-type (wt) HSV-2 (186) abortively infected murine bone marrow-derived DC and induced early cell death compared to UV-inactivated HSV-2 or mock-infected DC. The herpes simplex virus type 1 latency-associated transcript (LAT) inhibits apoptosis. We demonstrate here that LAT influences the accumulation of the Bcl-xL transcript versus the Bcl-xS transcript in Neuro-2A cells. Bcl-xL encodes an antiapoptotic protein, whereas Bcl-xS encodes a proapoptotic protein. Promoting the accumulation of Bcl-xL in neurons may inhibit apoptosis, thus enhancing the latency-reactivation cycle.

This paper discusses the evidence for pain perception in fish and presents new data on morphine analgesia in fish. Recent anatomical and electrophysiological studies have demonstrated that fish are capable of nociception, the simple detection of a noxious, potentially painful stimulus and the reflex response to this. To prove pain perception, it must be demonstrated that an animal’s behaviour is adversely affected by a potentially painful event and this must not be a reflex response. During 1996-1999, two thousand gastrointestinal tracts from native chicken sold in the avian market, Klongtoey, Prakanong, Bangkok were randomly examined for adult helminthes. The worms were identified and classified into 3 groups, according to their taxonomy. Intestinal flukes comprised of Echinostoma (1.0%), Prosthogonimus (0.1%) and Notocotylus (0.1%). Tapeworms were Amoebotaenia (0.5%), Cotugnia (2.1%), Diorchis (0.1%) Hymenolepis (0.9%) and Raillietina (14.5%). The last category was nematodes, which were in 5 genera : Ascaridia (7.2%), Capillaria (1.0%), Gongylonema (4.1%), Heterakis (9.4%), Strongyloides (0.4%) and Tetrameres (1.1%). The aim of the study was to investigate the motility and viability of canine epididymal spermatozoa, collected from the epididymides following orchidectomy (castration), over a period of time. Sperm samples were collected at 25-28oC from the caudal epididymis, 0, 1, 3, 6, and 12 hours, after the castration of 75 fertile dogs (1-10 years old). Progressive motility and viability of the epididymal sperm decreased over a period of time, after the collection. Rectal, faecal samples from 14 sheep were collected 3 times a day (morning, noon and evening) and examined for nematode eggs by the formalin-ether, sedimentation technique and the Brine floatation technique. The faecal egg counts were done by using the Stoll’s dilution, egg counting technique. The sheep were injected with ivermectin (Ivomec®) (0.2 mg/kg) subcutaneously. Three weeks later, faecal samples were collected and examined to determine the outcome of the treatment. It was found that strongyles and Trichuris ovis eggs were absent. A study of canine, gastric, Helicobacter spp. infection was performed. A total of 56 biopsied samples of cardia, fundus, body and pyloric antrum, submitted to the Department of Pathology, Faculty of Veterinary Science, Chulalongkorn University, during October, 2001 to 2002, were investigated. The objective of this study was to detect Helicobacter spp. infections in the stomach of dogs and to confirm any relationship between the histopathological changes in the stomach with the presence of bacteria. The histopathological results revealed inflammatory cell infiltration 100%(56/56), crypt distortion 69.64%(39/56), lymphoid follicular formation 67.86% (38/56) and epithelial degeneration 28.57%(16/56). Serum total and bone alkaline phosphatase (TAP and BAP) including Ca and P were measured in 6 dogs with osteoporotic bone and 10 dogs with less than a week fracture presented to the Small Animal Hospital, Faculty of Veterinary Science, Chulalongkorn University. The serum chemistry and ulnar radiographs were evaluated in plaster casting 9 normal experimental dogs before and after ulnar osteotomy on weeks 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14 and 16, postoperation. Thirty six, one day old broiler chicks were obtained from a commercial hatchery. They were brooded for 20 days before being placed in layer cages, with a wire floor, at 26-28oC, for a 7 day adaptation period. On day 28, the broilers were transferred into environmentally controlled housing, at 26-28oC, and were subjected to heat stress for 5 hrs, at a temperature of 33±1oC, each day, for 21 days. The spread of infectious disease among and between wild and domesticated animals has become a major problem worldwide. Upon analyzing the dynamics of wildlife growth and infection when the diseased animals cannot be identified separately from healthy wildlife prior to the kill, we find that harvest-based strategies alone have no impact on disease transmission. Other controls that directly influence disease transmission and/or mortality are required. Next, we analyze the socially optimal management of infectious wildlife. Cetacean (dolphin, whale and porpoise) brains are among the least studied mammalian brains because of the difficulty of collecting and histologically preparing such relatively rare and large specimens. Among cetaceans, there exist relatively few studies of the brain of the dwarf sperm whale (Kogia simus). Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) offers a means of observing the internal structure of the brain when traditional histological procedures are not practical. Nociception is the detection of a noxious tissue-damaging stimulus and is sometimes accompanied by a reflex response such as withdrawal. Pain perception, as distinct from nociception, has been demonstrated in birds and mammals but has not been systematically studied in lower vertebrates. We assessed whether a fish possessed cutaneous nociceptors capable of detecting noxious stimuli and whether its behavior was sufficiently adversely affected by the administration of a noxious stimulus. Electrophysiological recordings from trigeminal nerves identified polymodal nociceptors on the head of the trout with physiological properties similar to those described in higher vertebrates. The herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) latency-associated transcript (LAT) gene is essential for the high spontaneous and induced reactivation phenotype of HSV-1 in the rabbit ocular model and for the high induced reactivation phenotype in the mouse ocular model. Recently we showed that LAT has an antiapoptosis function, and we hypothesized that LAT’s ability to inhibit apoptosis played an important role in LAT’s ability to enhance the reactivation phenotype. A 3-month-old, female calf in the Dontan district of Mukdaharn province, showed clinical signs of bloody diarrhoea over a period of 3 days and finally died on April 4, 2001. After necropsy, severe, diffuse, haemorrhagic caeco-colitis and proctitis were markedly evident. Histopathologically, various stages of coccidial development, including schizogony and gametogony, were found in the villous epithelium and the epithelial crypts. Infiltration of lymphocytes, plasma cells, neutrophils and macrophages into the lamina propria, as well as into the submucosa was observed. Porcine small intestinal submucosa (PSIS) was used as a graft to repair 13 dogs with deep corneal ulceration. Eight cases had staphyloma and staphyloma associated with hyphema. Two cases had staphyloma associated with glaucoma. There was one case of each of descemetocoele, descemetocoele associated with glaucoma and rupture of the cornea. Ten dogs without glaucoma returned to normal vision (76.93%) with minimal anterior synechia and scarring. Three dogs with associated glaucoma became blind (23.07%). PSIS has been demonstrated to stimulate corneal healing without tissue rejection and is recommended to be used as a graft material to repair deep corneal ulcers …

Bronchoalveolar cells collected by lung lavage 28 days post infection (DPI) of negative controls, Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae (M. hyo)-infected, Porcine Respiratory and Reproductive Syndrome virus (PRRSV)-infected and dual-infected pigs, were evaluated for various cytokine mRNA (IL1α, IL1β, IL6, IL8, IL10, IL12, and TNFα). Semiquantitative RT-PCR revealed that IL1β, IL6, IL10 and the IL12 mRNA expression was significantly increased in dual-infected pigs, compared with the negative controls. PRRSV-infected pigs had significantly increased levels of IL10 and IL12 mRNA. Approximately 30%(range 13-49%) of sows are culled due to fertility disturbances. Reproductive failure on farms are due to anoestrus, repeat breeding (regular and irregular return to oestrus), negative pregnancy diagnosis, abortion or failure to farrow. Reproductive problems are often difficult to diagnose. As a diagnostic tool, post-mortem examination (i.e. macroscopically and histologically) of the reproductive organs is useful when sows with reproductive failure are culled. The present review provides information about the distribution of immune cells, both in non-inseminated and inseminated pregnant sows endometrium, in order to be able to differentiate a physiological distribution of immune cells from pathological conditions. …
