Pasteurella multocida-a gram-negative bacterium with a broad host range and ubiquitous distribution—is a serious problem in ducks, and the best method of control is vaccination with locally prevalent strains. The present study was conducted to compare the immunopotency of vaccines employing P. multocida biofilms and capsule enhanced organisms with ordinary broth grown organisms in 1-month-old ducklings, by measuring the humoral immune response and the protection conferred by each vaccine during homologous challenge with virulent organisms. The purpose of the present study was to determine the live weight development phases from hatchling to adolescent bird of Japanese quails bred in Kyrgyzstan, and to determine the age-related changes in body measurements. Adolescent birds were found to have a body length (distance between first vertebra thoracalis to end of sacrum) coefficient of 3.0, a sternum front to rear end length coefficient of 3.3, a tibia length of 2.34, and a pelvic width (distance between right and left acetabulum) coefficient of 1.58. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of feed additives on broiler productivity. Probiotics, oligosaccharides, organic acids, and avilamycin were used either alone or in combination to improve productivity in terms of body weight, feed intake, feed conversion ratio (FCR), and mortality rate. Twenty-eight growing Granadina goat bucks, divided into 4 groups of 7, in a 2 × 2 factorial arranged design, were used to study the effect of post-weaning levels of dietary energy and administration of recombinant bovine somatotropin (rbST) on growth and semen characteristics. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the clinical outcome and complications of the pocket technique in the repositioning of the prolapsed third eyelid gland in dogs. From 28 dogs, 38 eyes with protrusion of the third eyelid gland were treated using the pocket technique. Of the dogs, 22 (79%) were less than 1 year of age when the prolapse was first noted by the owner. Protrusion of the glands in both eyes was found in 10 of the dogs (36%). This study was designed to investigate the effects of a supplement of inulin and \beta-glucan into broiler rations on growth performance, serum cholesterol, intestinal length, and immune system. A total of 320 male 1-day-old Ross PM3 broiler chicks were divided into 1 control and 3 treatment groups, each comprising 80 birds. Each group was divided into 4 replicate groups of 20 birds each. The Black Bengal goat is an important livestock animal in Bangladesh. To assess the efficacy of selective anthelmintics against ecto- and endoparasites of Black Bengal goats and their treatment effects on body-weight gains and hematobiochemical indices, a field trial was conducted at Pahartali Thana in Chittagong district. The study was performed during the period of February 2006 to January 2007. Goats were treated with CEVAMEC®-1% (ivermectin) (T_1), ENDEX®-1500 (triclabendazole along with levamisole) (T_2), and a placebo (T_3, untreated). The short-term effects of 6% hydroxyethyl starch (HES) and whole blood (WB) resuscitations in hypovolemic shock (HS) on invasive and noninvasive hemodynamic variables were studied from the clinical point of view in 20 mature healthy male Beagle dogs. After anesthesia, the animals were randomly divided into 2 groups, HES (n = 10) and WB (n = 10), and were surgically instrumented with an arterial catheter and a thermodilution cardiac output catheter. Clostridium perfringens is a gram-positive, anaerobic bacterium that causes a wide range of diseases in humans and animals. The purposes of this study were to determine, using the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), the clostridial toxins in intestinal samples of lambs with suspected enterotoxemia; to conduct molecular typing of C. perfringens isolates; and to investigate the presence of the genes of 4 major toxins (\alpha, \beta, \epsilon, and \iota) in the isolates by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The present study was conducted to determine the presence of enterotoxin and verotoxin levels in Turkish cheeses sold in retail stores in İstanbul, Turkey. For this purpose, 150 cheese samples (25 pieces of each: white pickled cheese, tulum cheese, mihaliç cheese, hellim cheese, örgü cheese, and civil cheese) were analyzed microbiologically for Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and E. coli O157:H7, and the presence of the toxins was identified using an ELISA test (RIDASCREEN® Set A, B, C, D, E and Verotoxin). The aim of the present study was to elucidate the potential role of humoral factors of innate immunity in broilers infected with Eimeria tenella under the influence of inorganic and organic Se cations. It was found that the chickens treated with Sel-Plex® had higher serum lysozyme concentrations compared to those treated with sodium selenite in infected and noninfected groups. The authors consider that Sel-Plex® has a better expressed immunostimulating effect on serum lysozyme concentrations than sodium selenite.

Acrylamide (AA), used in many fields, from industrial manufacturing to laboratory work, is also formed during the heating process through the interactions of amino acids. Therefore, AA poses a significant risk for both human and animal health. This study aimed to elucidate whether N-acetyl-L-cysteine (NAC) treatment could modulate AA-induced oxidative changes in the brain, lung, liver, kidney, and testes tissues of the rat. The objective of this study was to investigate the pregnancy rate following artificial insemination (AI) or natural service (NS) in postpartum estrous synchronized beef cattle. A total of 85 Brangus cows, postpartum, were divided into 2 groups. Group 1 consisted of 35 cows and was further subdivided into 7 groups, each consisted of 5 cows that were naturally mated. The aim of this study was to identify ectoparasites of wild roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) living in natural areas of Samsun Province that were wounded by car accidents or hunters between 2007 and 2010. A total of 90 ticks, 60 lice, and 5 deer keds were collected from 17 animals. Five tick species (Ixodes ricinus, Rhipicephalus bursa, Rhipicephalus turanicus, Haemaphysalis punctata, and Haemaphysalis concinna), 1 louse species (Cervicola meyeri), and 1 deer ked species (Lipoptena cervi) were identified. Cervicola meyeri and L. cervi were identified for the first time in Turkey.

A 15-year-old female rhesus macaque was showing signs of bleeding from the vulva, while no other signs were noted. The animal was treated symptomatically with no improvement. On abdominal laparoscopy, a small transparent growth was discovered on both of the uterine horns, between the ovaries and fallopian tubes, and after thorough examination was diagnosed as a paraovarian cyst. The left cyst was larger (5-6 cm) than the right cyst (3-4 cm). Both of the cysts were smooth and transparent due to accumulated fluid. The cysts were aspirated and removed by bipolar laparoscopy cauterization.

In Palestine, as in other countries, brucellosis is an endemic disease, even in highly vaccinated zones. Many reports suggest that a decline in vaccine productivity may be due to antigenic shifts in the circulating Brucella melitensis. To address this aspect, the hemagglutinin gene from B. melitensis field isolates was amplified by polymerase chain reaction (PCR), sequenced, digested with the EcoRV and HaeIII, and compared to the Rev.1 strain of the B. melitensis vaccine. Avian influenza (AI) is an infectious disease of birds caused by type A strains of the influenza virus. Among these AI viruses, only serotypes H5 and H7 are considered highly pathogenic in poultry. However, serotype H9N2 has also been found to produce severe respiratory tract infections in chickens. Migratory birds of the world are a natural reservoir of influenza viruses of all subtypes. The main function of the sinus node is to provide the electrical impulse responsible for normal cardiac rhythm. The rhythmic coordination depends on the passage of the excitation wave by the heart through its conductive system of impulse. There is considerable variability in the size and exact location of the sinus node of individual hearts even within the same species. Histological features of the sinus node including the cells, the nodal artery, the collagen framework, and the innervation, and also some physiological characteristics of the node, will be discussed.

Neuronal and extraneuronal lipofuscinosis was determined in Merino sheep (6 sheep and 3 heads of sheep) of 2-3 years old that had grazed on Asphodelus aestivus seeds. Clinically, the sheep exhibited tremors, paresis, oral and nasal discharge, and severe respiratory distress. Haemorrhagic necrotic tracheitis, aspiration pneumonia, and subacute enteritis were observed in 6 sheep during macroscopic examinations. The brains of the animals were of firm consistency and yellowish brown in colour. Histological examination of the central nervous system revealed that most of the cytoplasm of neurons contained yellowish brown pigment granules. Weanling crossbred pigs were used in a 5-week trial to evaluate the effects of biotin and porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2) challenge on serum cytokine concentrations and humoral immunoresponse. Although not significant, there was a trend towards reduced interferon-\gamma concentration in the challenged pigs compared to the controls, especially at 14 and 21 days postinoculation (dpi). Biotin supplementation with 50 or 200 µg/kg biotin improved these levels, with higher doses producing an earlier and stronger response. Growth Performance And Intestinal Histomorphology In Egg-Type Growing Roosters Fed Recycled Food Waste Containing Effective Microorganisms, Jassada Ruttanavut, Koh En Yamauchi

To evaluate the effects of a recycled food waste (eco-feed) containing effective microorganisms derived from Japanese mugwort silage juice (EJP) on growth performance and intestinal histomorphology, 48 male chickens of 14 days old were divided into 0%, 20%, 40%, and 60% EJP diet groups. At 20 weeks of age, body weight gain was similar in the 20% EJP group but lower in the 40% and 60% EJP groups (P < 0.05) compared to that in the control group. The relative total intestinal length and weight tended to be long and heavy, respectively, in the 20% and 40% EJP groups, but short and light, respectively, in the 60% EJP group. Although numerous villi were found in the jejunum and ileum of all EJP groups, the villus height and size observed in these groups were smaller. Cell area and cell mitosis number in the duodenum and jejunum of all EJP groups were lower than those of the control group (P < 0.01). Epithelial cells on the villus apical surface of the 20% EJP group showed morphology similar to that of cells on the villus apical surface of the control group in all of the intestinal segments. The growth performance data suggested that EJP could be incorporated at up to a level of 20% in chicken diets. The intestinal histological results suggested that long-term feeding of an EJP diet at up to the 40% level may result in a long and heavy intestine by increasing the numbers of miniature intestinal villi.

The objective of this study was to investigate the morphology and the distribution of 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT), somatostatin (SS), gastrin (Gas), glucagon (Glu), and substance P immunoreactive (IR) cells in the digestive tract of gray goose by the immunohistochemical streptavidin-peroxidase method. The samples were taken from 10 healthy adult gray geese. The results showed that 5 kinds of IR cells were mainly distributed between the mucous epithelium and intestinal gland. Electron beam irradiation of sugarcane bagasse at doses of 250 and 500 kGy could change its cell wall composition and ruminal fiber degradation characteristics by breaking off the lignocellulosic bonds. Nylon bags of untreated or electron beam-irradiated bagasse were suspended in the rumen of 3 fistulated rams for up to 72 h, and the resulting data were fitted to a nonlinear degradation model to calculate the degradation parameters of dry matter (DM) and neutral detergent fiber (NDF). The effects of some heavy metals Co(II), Cu(II), Zn(II), and Ag(I) on carbonic anhydrase (CA) activity from rainbow trout (RT) muscle were investigated. Moreover, the effects of these metals on the expression of heat shock protein 70 (Hsp70) gene in muscle tissue were examined by real-time quantitative PCR (RT-PCR) in muscle tissue after exposure to the metals at the end of 6, 12, 24, and 48 h. This study aimed to purify glutathione reductase (GR) from turkey liver and investigate some of its characteristic features. The purification procedure comprised 2 steps: homogenate preparation and 2',5'-ADP Sepharose 4B affinity gel chromatography. Thanks to the 2 consecutive procedures, the enzyme, having the specific activity of 606.67 EU mg protein^{-1}, was purified with a yield of 10.75% and 2476-fold, and, in order to control enzyme purity, SDS-PAGE was done. In an 11-month study, 292 samples from 13 slaughterhouses in Bulgaria were investigated for the presence of Campylobacter spp., and some factors affecting Campylobacter prevalence were analyzed. The study revealed that 44.9% of the samples were positive for Campylobacter spp. The main species detected were C. coli and C. jejuni. There was also one confirmed C. lari isolate. The C. coli strains prevailed over C. jejuni at 61.8% and 37.4%, respectively. A seasonal variation in the Campylobacter spp. presence in slaughter broiler carcasses was found with a predominance of positive isolates during June and July 2008. The conventional type of …
