The effect of maternal undernutrition on muscle development of near-term ovine fetuses was studied in 2 experiments. In each experiment, Welsh mountain ewes were randomly assigned to either control (C) or nutrient-restricted (R) groups. In the first experiment, mild maternal undernutrition (85% of daily nutritional requirement (DNR)), and in the second experiment, severe maternal undernutrition (50% of DNR), were imposed between 0 and 70 days of gestation (dg). Controls for both groups were maintained on 100% of their DNR throughout the experiment. In each experiment, ewes were killed at 126 ± 1 dg by an intravenous injection of pentobarbitone. The …

This study aimed to determine the prevalence of Escherichia coli O157 in retail red meat and meat products with the Vitek Immunodiagnostic Assay System, including H7 Escherichia coli phage technology (VIDAS ECPT), and a real-time polymerase chain reaction system (LightCycler PCR; LCPCR). A total of 106 red meat and meat product samples were analyzed with VIDAS ECPT and LCPCR. The pathophysiological mechanisms underlying blood-brain barrier (BBB) disruption in preeclampsia/eclampsia have not been elucidated. This study investigated the effect of pentylenetetrazole (PTZ)-induced seizures on the functional and structural properties of the BBB during N (omega)-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME)-induced hypertension and proteinuria in pregnant rats. Animals were treated with L-NAME for 10 days, beginning on day 10 of pregnancy. The BBB permeability was determined by measurements of sodium fluorescein (NaFlu) extravasation into the brain. Occludin and aquaporin (AQP)-4 immunoreactivities were evaluated in brain sections. Severe proteinuria and significantly increased arterial blood pressure were observed following L-NAME treatment. Milk and dairy products are frequently contaminated with exterotoxigenic Staphylococcus aureus, which is often involved in Staphylococcal food poisoning. The aim of the present study is to investigate the presence of classical enterotoxins of S. aureus in raw milk that was produced in Isfahan, Iran. For this purpose, 72 milk samples were collected from the bulk milk tanks of 12 milking farms during 3 different seasons (winter, spring, and summer) and tested for the presence of staphylococcal enterotoxins (SEs) using the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) method. The present report records the simultaneous occurrence of ischnoceran lice Columbicola phoenicopterae and Coloceras setosum on the Yellow-legged Green Pigeon in India. The prevalence, intensity of infestation, range of infestation, and nature of the antennal sensilla of these 2 species on 12 of these pigeons have also been recorded.

This research was conducted to estimate variance components and genetic parameters for type traits and milk yield in Holstein-Friesian cattle. In this study, 597 daughters of 158 sires in 128 herds were classified. In the data analysis, type scores for 354 daughters bred within 70 herds sired by 46 sires that had at least 3 daughters, and 304 lactation records for 206 daughters within 56 herds sired by 37 sires, were considered. The aim of this study was to determine egg consumption habits in Turkey. Questionnaires prepared to determine habits regarding egg consumption were supplied to 2241 families. Sampling sizes and sample addresses were provided by the Turkish Statistical Institute. Data obtained through the questionnaires were analyzed using SPSS. Of the families that participated in the study, 98% consume eggs and the number of eggs consumed per person was 158 per year. The effects of 3 levels of commercial Aspergillus meal prebiotic (Fermacto®) in broiler diets with 2 levels of dietary crude protein (CP) on the growth performance, carcass characteristics, apparent ileal digestibility of CP and organic matter (OM), and serum lipid profile were evaluated using 240-day-old broiler chickens as a factorial arrangement in a completely randomized design. Postmortem spermatozoa recovery is an important tool for harvesting germplasm from genetically meritorious animals and endangered species. The principal motive of this study was to find out whether ram spermatozoa within epididymides kept at 4 °C for 48 h retain their quality in terms of progressive motility, viability, and acrosomal status. Twenty-four testicles with attached epididymides were collected with 8 samples each processed at 0, 24, and 48 h of storage. A good number of motile spermatozoa could be recovered from epididymides by incision method with up to 48 h of storage, although their quality declined significantly (P < 0.05) as postmortem storage time increased (motility: 83.33 ± 1.05%, 63.33 ± 2.47%, and 44.17 ± 1.53%; and epididymal sperm output (millions): 3500.00 ± 73.97, 1220.00 ± 1.01, and 666.67 ± 19.78 for 0 (control), 24, and 48 h, respectively). Viability and intact acrosomes (%) were also acceptable, although they decreased significantly with up to 24 h of storage. In conclusion, ram epididymides could be stored at 4 °C for 48 h when epididymal spermatozoa cannot be immediately harvested and cryopreserved.

These studies were carried out on 14 adult (9 males and 5 females) Equus przewalskii f. caballus (Linnaeus, 1758) horses, using both the skulls and mandibles. All of the material originated from 3 Polish archaeological sites that date back to the Early Medieval period. The most extensive craniometrical investigations consisted of 40 skull measurements and 16 mandible measurements. Subclinical endometritis contributes to repeat breeder syndrome in dairy cows. This study evaluated the effect of intrauterine cephapirin benzathine administration after timed artificial insemination (TAI) on the conception rate (CR) in repeat breeder dairy cows. The effects of prestorage leukoreduction and storage duration on the in vitro quality parameters of canine packed red blood cells (pRBCs) stored in saline-adenine-glucose-mannitol (SAGM) were investigated. Hematological, biochemical, and morphological changes in filtered and unfiltered pRBCs were determined each week during 42 days of storage. All of the parameters changed significantly during storage. The effects of leukoreduction on leukocyte and erythrocyte count, packed cell volume, hemoglobin content, and erythrocyte morphology were significant. While supernatant K increased during storage, glucose, Cl, and 2,3-diphosphoglycerate (2,3-DPG) concentrations decreased. In the present investigation, attempts were made to characterize lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) isozyme in quail heart and breast muscle by using electrophoresis, kinetic, and molecular techniques. Polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis of the heart and breast muscle revealed a single isozyme. Kinetic studies were carried out for further functional characterization of LDH isozyme in the heart and breast muscle. Substrate inhibition, enzyme kinetics, and inhibitor (urea) studies indicated that the isozymes present in these tissues differed in their functional properties. The present investigation was carried out on 12,859 fortnightly test-day milk yield records of first lactation pertaining to 643 Sahiwal cows spread over a period of 49 years (1961-2009), maintained at the National Dairy Research Institute, Karnal, India. The comparison of 3 lactation curve models, i.e. the quadratic model, gamma-type function, and mixed log function, was done using fortnightly test-day milk yield records. A 4-year-old, 8.7-kg intact male Pekingese dog was presented with stricture of the urethral opening after a perineal urethrostomy revision surgery. Total penile amputation and preputial urethrostomy with bilateral pubic-ischial osteotomy were performed. After surgery, the dog was able to urinate through the natural preputial orifice, avoiding urine scalding associated with urethral anastomosis to the adjacent skin. Nine months after surgery, no major complications were noted with the exception of a small amount of urine dribbling after urination.

Establishment And Biological Research Of The Jining Grey Goat Fibroblast Line, Chunyu Bai, Dianjun Wang, Xiaohua Su, Minghai Zhang, Weijun Guan, Yuehui Ma

Using Jining Grey goat ear marginal tissues as experimental materials, we succeeded in establishing a fibroblast cell bank, including 32 samples, by means of a primary explant and cryopreservation technique. The results from the biological analysis suggested that the population doubling time of the cell line was approximately 48 h. The diploid accounted for 98.35%, the isozyme analysis of the lactic dehydrogenase and malic dehydrogenase disproved cross contamination, and the results of the bacterium, fungi, virus, and mycoplasma detection tests were all negative. Twenty worm-free male West African dwarf (WAD) goats, 7-8 months of age, were used to study the effect of dietary protein on their response to mixed infections of trychostrongyles. This study aimed to investigate the histopathological changes that occurred in the wound of the sole ulcer located on the hooves of dairy cattle. A total of 12 Holstein-Frisian dairy cows suffering from sole ulcer were studied. Sole ulcers in the lateral hoof of the left or right foot of hind legs containing the corium and a part of the epidermis were collected and examined histopathologically. The main objectives of this study were to determine the prevalence and antimicrobial resistance patterns of Escherichia coli isolates in feces of pigs and their production environments on farms. A total of 560 isolates of Escherichia coli, from 112 samples obtained from weaner and finisher pigs, feed, water, and house sparrows on 8 farrow-to-finish farms, were tested for susceptibility to 16 antimicrobials. The prevalence of resistance varied widely (0.0% to 69.5%) among the antimicrobials tested. From the tested swines, 75.75% of the isolates were resistant to one or more antimicrobials. Resistance was significantly more frequent (P = 0.005, P < 0.01) in swine isolates compared to those from feed, water, and sparrows and significantly more frequent (P = 0.007, P < 0.01) in weaner pigs compared to finisher pigs. The findings indicate that resistance to a broad range of antimicrobials was prevalent among fecal E. coli isolates of swine on the study farms. Fortunately, E. coli was not isolated from the feed, water, and house sparrows.

On 2 June 2010, an abnormally pigmented specimen of Solea solea L. with a total length of 222 mm was obtained near Tuzla, from the İzmir Bay of the Aegean Sea. This is the first record of abnormal pigmentation in the wild common sole from the Aegean Sea. The specimen fish is patterned with both hypermelanosis on the blind side and hypomelanosis on the ocular side. This kind of malpigmentation in any flatfish is not typical.

This case report aims to highlight the utility of the jaundice foal agglutination (JFA) test used in the prevention of neonatal foal death caused by equine neonatal isoerythrolysis. The colostrum and the serum of a Friesian mare with repeated neonatal foal deaths and the whole blood of her newborn foal were tested for 5 days with the JFA test to detect a probable incompatibility. In Pakistan, a scant number of Bengal tigers (Panthera tigris tigris) are being kept at various zoos or in certain wildlife sanctuaries, and there is a dearth of literature regarding the effect of captivity on their physiological parameters. The present study was hence conducted to determine and compare the hematological alterations in tigers of Bengal origin (Panthera tigris tigris) kept in captivity at Lahore Zoo (LZ) (n = 4) and in the seminatural environment of Lahore Wildlife Park (LWP) (n = 6), Pakistan. The results reflect a significantly higher (P < 0.05) total leucocyte count and platelet count and a lower packed cell volume in animals kept at LWP as compared to those of animals kept at LZ. No other significant differences in hematology were noted for the 2 captive forms. Despite the limitation of sample size in the present study, it was concluded that captivity has a significant effect on various hematological parameters in Bengal tigers. These baseline data will lay a foundation in the therapeutic evaluation and physical monitoring of tigers kept in various forms of captivity not only in Pakistan, but also in other countries such as India, Nepal, Bhutan, and Bangladesh, as well.
