Myocardial contractility is defined as the velocity of cycling of heavy meromyosin cross-bridges. Contractility may be defined also as the velocity of myocardial fiber shortening or change in ventricular dimension during contraction when the fiber shortens or the ventricle contracts against no load. In the clinic; however, myocardial contractility may be estimated by some parameters of systolic function adjusted for the degree of stretch on the fibers (the preload) just before contraction begins and the hindrance to ejection of blood (the afterload). In pig production, different insemination methods which allow deposition of sperm in the uterine body (intrauterine insemination, IUI) and uterine horn (deep intrauterine insemination) have been applied in order to reduce number of spermatozoa. Earlier studies reported that steroid hormones influenced the transportation of spermatozoa, ovum and embryos in the sow reproductive tract which was related to the presence of their specific receptors; oestrogen receptor alpha (ERα) and progesterone receptor (PR). Effects Of Myogenic Factor 5 (Myf5) Gene On Carcass And Meat Quality Of Mong Cai Pigs, Thi Kim Khang Nguyen, Trong Ngu Nguyen

The aim of this study was to analyze the impact of Myogenic Factor 5 gene (MYF5) on carcass and meat quality of Mong Cai pigs. PCR-RFLP was applied to genotype 100 animals at three loci defined as MYF5/Hin1II, MYF5/HaeIII and MYF5/MspI. Results showed that MC pigs had two genotypes at each locus namely CD and DD,EF and EE, and GH and HH for the MYF5/Hin1II, MYF5/HaeIII and MYF5/MspI loci, respectively. The frequencies of DD, EE and HH were predominant (0.78-0.94) in the population. Mutated feline coronavirus (FCoV) causes a highly fatal disease in cats, named feline infectious peritonitis (FIP). Common FIP clinical signs represent an accumulation of fluid in the thorax and/or abdomen. Screening tests currently rely on fluid analysis with cytologic examination to differentiate cellular components. Accordingly, accurate ante-mortem diagnosis is prerequisite for effective treatment strategies. Polysaccharide gel (PG) from the rind of durian (Durio zibethinus Murr.) is a soluble powder that gives good results as an excipient in pharmacological and food preparation. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effects of PG as a feed-supplement diet on body weight gain, immune stimulation, total bacteria and Salmonella in feces, and cholesterol levels in broilers. Laparoscopic artificial insemination (LAI) and embryo transfer (ET) were used to produce cross-bred blackcolored goat. In Experiment 1, LAI with frozen-thawed semen of black buck (Australian Melaan) was performed in 75% Saanen cross-bred does (white color, n = 70). The total numbers of 68 kids were born from 50 does. The skin colors of kids born were black (10.29%), white (39.71%) and other colors (50%). Prevalence Of Salmonella Enterica, Escherichia Coli And Staphylococcus Aureus In Raw Meat In Thai Self-Service Style Restaurants In Khon Kaen Municipality, Sunpetch Angkititrakul, Arunee Polpakdee, Rungtip Chuanchuen

One hundred and fifty eight raw meat samples were collected from 33 Thai self-service style restaurants in Khon Kaen municipality during July-October 2011. The fresh meat included pork, beef and chicken and was provided for self-grilling or boiling. All the samples were examined for contamination of three major foodborne pathogens including Salmonella enterica, Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus using standard protocol. High prevalence of S. enterica (44%), E. coli (60%) and S. aureus (25%) was observed. The purpose of this study was to investigate histological characteristics of auditory tube diverticulum in domestic donkeys (Equus asinus) using conventional histological and histochemical methods. Specimens were collected from twenty regions (five different locations of each compartment of auditory diverticulum). The mucosa consisted of pseudostratified columnar epithelium with brush-like cilia and forms of some non-isometric folds. The few goblet cells, which were irregularly distributed over the whole luminal surface, reacted strongly with Alcian blue pH 2.5, whereas neutral mucosubstances were not observed. This study was conducted to investigate the efficacy of 10% w/v fipronil spot-on for treatment and prevention of Rhipicephalus sanguineus infestations on dogs. Twelve Beagles were randomly separated into two groups which were treatment and control group (6 dogs/group). The treatment group received 10% fipronil spot-on at the dosage of 6.7 mg/kg on day 0. Glutamate transporters are responsible for active transport of glutamate over the cell membrane and play an important role in the glutamate-glutamine cycle. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the influence of intracellular glutamine depletion on glutamate uptake mediated by amino acid transport systems; EAATs and X-c in placental choriocarcinoma (BeWo) cells as a model of human trophoblasts. Intracellular glutamine was depleted by culturing the cells in regular medium without glutamine and by treating with an inhibitor of glutamine synthetase (methionine sulfoximine; MSX), for 16 hours. Sequence variability in two mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) regions, namely NADH dehydrogenase subunit 5 (nad5) and small subunit of ribosomal RNA (rrnS) in Spirometra erinaceieuropaei from dogs in Hunan province in China was examined. A portion of the nad5 (pnad5) and rrnS (prrnS) genes were amplified separately from individual S. erinaceieuropaei by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Representative amplicons were subjected to sequencing in order to estimate sequence variability. The sequences of pnad5 and prrnS were 531 and 328 bp in size, respectively. Pet ownership statistics in Taiwan had not been investigated until Animal Protection Act was announced on November 4, 1998. This longitudinal study aims to investigate the demographic information of household cats in Taiwan and discuss its implications with social changes from 2001 to 2009 biennially. Household cats were surveyed biennially by randomly dialed telephone survey. A structured questionnaire was designed to obtain household demographics and population-associated data on pet ownership. A critical question surrounding emergence of novel strains of avian influenza viruses (AIV) is the ability for wild migratory birds to translocate a complete (unreassorted whole genome) AIV intercontinentally. Virus translocation via migratory birds is suspected in outbreaks of highly pathogenic strain A(H5N1) in Asia, Africa, and Europe. As a result, the potential intercontinental translocation of newly emerging AIV (e.g. A(H7N9) from Eurasia to North America via migratory movements of birds) remains a concern. An experiment conducted in El Reno, Oklahoma during the fly season (May - September/October) evaluated the effects of horn flies on milk production, calf performance, and pasture behavior and temperament measurements of beef cow calf pairs. Obesity is an epidemic in many developed nations and maternal obesity can result in developmental alterations in offspring that have long-lasting effects. Two experiments were conducted to determine the impact of maternal obesity on placental development and early embryonic growth and muscle development. Experiment one utilized obese Lethal Yellow (LY) and normal weight C57BL/6 (B6) dams to assess how maternal obesity alters skeletal muscle development in mid-gestational embryos. Embryos from LY dams exhibited decreased embryo and placental weights as well as an increase in the myogenic marker desmin. Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension (PAH) is a sever disorder characterized by high pulmonary artery pressure and pulmonary vascular resistance along with specific histological changes. Idiopathic PAH is a human disease of unknown origin that showed common characteristics to PHS/ascites in chicken. PHS/ascites is a condition found in broilers causing right ventricular hypertrophy, valvular insufficiency, increased venous pressure, variable liver changes, accumulation of fluids in the abdominal cavity, and finally lung and heart failure. The pathogenic virus Panulirus argus virus 1 (PaV1) was first discovered in Caribbean spiny lobsters Panulirus argus from the Florida Keys (USA) in 1999 and has since been reported in Belize, Mexico, and Cuba; its distribution in the wider Caribbean is unknown. We collected tissue samples from adult spiny lobsters from 30 locations in 14 countries bordering the Caribbean Sea and used molecular diagnostics to assay for the presence of PaV1. Rearing birds on wire flooring has proven to be an effective method for consistently triggering significant levels of lameness in broilers, and while the wire flooring model has been proven effective, more mobile wire floor models have been developed to compliment the facility management conditions within commercial genetic selection programs. BACKGROUND: A striking characteristic of the past four influenza pandemic outbreaks in the United States has been the multiple waves of infections. However, the mechanisms responsible for the multiple waves of influenza or other acute infectious diseases are uncertain. Understanding these mechanisms could provide knowledge for health authorities to develop and implement prevention and control strategies. Dr. James Howard Snook was born in South Lebanon, Ohio in Warren County in 1879. He was both an alumnus and later a faculty member of the Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine. In 1922 Dr. Snook married Helen Marple and had a daughter. In 1926 Dr. Snook began an affair with an OSU medical student, Theora Hix. The affair lasted about 2 years. During a visit in 1929 Theora Hix allegedly threatened to harm Dr. Snook's wife and child. Dr. Snook murdered her and was sentenced to death in February of 1930.

BACKGROUND: Strongyle parasites are ubiquitous in grazing horses. Strongylus vulgaris, the most pathogenic of the large strongyles, is known for its extensive migration in the mesenteric arterial system. The lifecycle of S. vulgaris is characterised by a long prepatent period where the migrating larvae are virtually undetectable as there currently is no test available for diagnosing prepatent S. vulgaris infection. Presence of S. vulgaris larvae in the arterial system causes endarteritis and thrombosis with a risk of non-strangulating intestinal infarctions. Antibacterial Activity Of Tannin From Sweet Chestnut Wood Against Aeromonas And Streptococcal Pathogens Of Tilapia (Oreochromis Niloticus), Hathairat Maisak, Sasibha Jantrakajorn, Mintra Lukkana, Janenuj Wongtavatchai

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

The present study determined the inhibitory effect of tannin from sweet chestnut wood against tilapia Oreochromis niloticus bacterial pathogens, Aeromonas hydrophila (20 isolates) and Streptococcus agalactiae (20 isolates). Minimum Inhibitory Concentrations (MICs) corresponding to tannin and oxytetracycline (OTC) for A. hydrophila were 18.75-300 μg/ml and 0.125-128 μg/ml; and for S. agalactiae were 600 μg/ml and 0.5-8 μg/ml, respectively. The antibacterial potency of tannin from sweet chestnut wood was found in the test system of pH: 6.5-7.0, suggesting that the inhibitory effect of tannins is unrelated to their acidity property. Morphological Aspects By Light And Scanning Electron Microscopic Studies Of Swamp Buffalo Endometrium At Follicular And Mid-Luteal Phases, Paisan Tienthai, Kriengyot Sajjarengpong

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

This study was carried out to observe morphological changes of swamp buffalo endometrium at follicularand mid-luteal phases. Uterine horns were collected from female buffaloes at a local abattoir and the selected estrousstages were categorized into the follicular (n = 10) and mid-luteal (n = 10) phases. General histology andhistomorphometry were examined under light microscope (LM) whereas a scanning electron microscope (SEM) wasused to study surface epithelial changes. The results showed that the height of the endometrial epithelium, thenumber of superficial endometrial glands and the number of capillaries were significantly greater (p < 0.05) at thefollicular phase. By SEM examination, the ciliated and secretory cells with different patterns, i.e. abundant microvillion the apical part or secretory protrusion in various degrees, distinctly increased at the follicular phase. In themeantime, numerous secretory cells with stubby microvilli were covered throughout the endometrial surface withsecretory vesicles on endometrial glandular orifices at the mid-luteal phase in which the ciliated cells were sparselyseen. It was concluded that the swamp buffalo endometrium obviously revealed modifications during the estrouscycle for physiological events, i.e. sperm transport, early embryonic development and implantation.
