To study acute lung toxicity of various doses of colloidal silver nanoparticles (Ag-NPs), mice were intratracheally instilled with 0, 10, 100, 1000 or 10,000 ppm of Ag-NPs. Histopathology, autometallography (AMG) and immunohistochemistry were determined at 1, 3, 7 and 15 days post-exposure.Instillation of 100, 1,000 and 10,000 ppm Ag-NPs produced moderate to severe necrotizing bronchitis and alveolitiswith hypertrophy and hyperplasia of alveolar epithelial cells. The severity of the pulmonary inflammation and damage increased in a dose-dependent manner. Concomitant lamininimmunohistochemical findings generally correlated with pulmonary lesions. Three types of gentamicin beads were compared in a rat osteomyelitis model. The gentamicin beads were prepared in cylinder shape (diameter 2 mm x height 4 mm). Gentamicin impregnated polymethylmethacrylate (GIPMMA) beads were fabricated according to manufacturer’s instructions. Gentamicin coated native calcium sulfate (GNCS) bead and gentamicin coated high porous calcium sulfate (G-HPCS) bead were prepared in laboratory. This study aimed to investigate freezing effects of ovarian tissues on survival of preantral follicles and observing in vitro growing of preantral follicles retrieved from cryopreserved ovarian cortical tissues of a cheetah post-mortem. After 29-hour cold storage, ovarian cortices were cut into small pieces (2.0 x 2.0 x 1.0 mm3) and allocated to be frozen using a passive cooling container (n = 3 pieces) or vitrification (n=3 pieces). Nine wild Bornean leopard cats were anesthetized using a combination of tiletamine and zolazepam (Zoletil©) after being captured in humanely-designed live traps in Sabah, Malaysian Borneo, for the purpose of fitting radio-collars. For five leopard cats (group 1) a single dose of 6.92±1.06 mg/kg of Zoletil© was administered. The mean induction time from the initial Zoletil© dose was 7.9 ± 1.77 minutes, and the mean anesthesia time was 47.2 ± 25.1. The study was conducted for the isolation and detection of Bacillus anthracis spores from soil collected from Sirajganj district (a north-western district of Bangladesh), and to assess the parameters that may relate to the repeated anthrax outbreak. A total of 48 soil samples were collected from the study area during January to November 2012. Endospores were extracted from soil and the Bacillus anthracis was identified using conventional bacteriological, biochemical and sensitivity test against Penicillin-G. This study was conducted to determine whether buccal cells obtained by swabbing could be a DNA source for genetic analysis, and to compare two preservative media, distilled water and Tris-EDTA (TE), pH 8.0. Buccal cell samples were collected from 30 domestic cats (Felis catus), 4 captive fishing cats (Prionailurus viverrinus) and 8 captive tigers (Panthera tigris). The total concentration of DNA and purity were not statistically different between the preservative media. All samples could be graded as a minimum as high quality DNA (DNA found with A260/A280 ratio >2.0 or < 1.8). In addition, the quality of DNA extracted from both media was successfully amplified for PCR. However, when compared to whole blood samples, total DNA concentration from buccal swab was significantly lower (p < 0.05) .Despite the decrease in DNA yield, buccal swab could be an alternative source for obtaining DNA for genetic analyses. This non-invasive, simple and inexpensive technique eases genetic studies in this family especially in domestic cat from which whole blood samples are difficult to collect.

Since the first reported cases of ducks infected with a previously unknown flavivirus in eastern China in April 2010, the virus, provisionally designated Duck Tembusu Virus (DTMUV), has spread widely in domestic ducks in China and caused significant economic losses to poultry industry. In this study, we examined in detail structural, antigenic, and evolutionary properties of envelope (E) proteins of six DTMUV isolates spanning 2010–2012, each being isolated from individual farms with different geographical locations where disease outbreaks were documented. In sugar cataract formation in rats, aldose reductase (AR) actitvity is not only linked to lenticular sorbitol (diabetic) or galactitol (galactosemic) formation but also to signal transduction changes, cytotoxic signals and activation of apoptosis. Using both in vitro and in vivo techniques, the interrelationship between AR activity, polyol (sorbitol and galactitol) formation, osmotic stress, growth factor induction, and cell signaling changes have been investigated. We report here identification of novel mimicry epitopes for interphotoreceptor retinoid-binding protein (IRBP) 201–216, a candidate ocular antigen that causes experimental autoimmune uveoretinitis (EAU) in A/J mice. One mimicry epitope from Ehrlichia canis (EHC), designated EHC 44–59, induced cross-reactive T cells for IRBP 201–216 capable of producing T helper (Th)1 and Th17 cytokines, but failed to induce EAU in A/J mice. In addition, animals first primed with suboptimal doses of IRBP 201–216 and subsequently immunized with EHC 44–59 did not develop EAU; rather, the mimicry epitope prevented the disease induced by IRBP 201–216. Sequencing of equine mRNA (RNA-seq) identified 428 putative transcripts which do not map to any previously annotated or predicted horse genes. Most of these encode the equine homologs of known protein-coding genes described in other species, yet the potential exists to identify novel and perhaps equine-specific gene structures. A set of 36 transcripts were prioritized for further study by filtering for levels of expression (depth of RNA-seq read coverage), distance from annotated features in the equine genome, the number of putative exons, and patterns of gene expression between tissues. The heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoprotein K (hnRNP K) is a member of the family of hnRNPs and was recently shown in a genome-wide small interfering RNA (siRNA) screen to support vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV) growth. To decipher the role of hnRNP K in VSV infection, we conducted studies which suggest that the protein is required for VSV spreading. Virus binding to cells, entry, and nucleocapsid uncoating steps were not adversely affected in the absence of hnRNP K, whereas viral genome transcription and replication were reduced slightly. Lentiviral envelope (Env) antigenic variation and associated immune evasion present major obstacles to vaccine development. The concept that Env is a critical determinant for vaccine efficacy is well accepted, however defined correlates of protection associated with Env variation have yet to be determined. We reported an attenuated equine infectious anemia virus (EIAV) vaccine study that directly examined the effect of lentiviral Env sequence variation on vaccine efficacy. The study identified a significant, inverse, linear correlation between vaccine efficacy and increasing divergence of the challenge virus Env gp90 protein compared to the vaccine virus gp90. Edwardsiella ictaluri is a Gram-negative facultative intracellular pathogen causing enteric septicemia of channel catfish (ESC). The disease causes considerable economic losses in the commercial catfish industry in the United States. Although antibiotics are used as feed additive, vaccination is a better alternative for prevention of the disease. Here we report the development and characterization of novel live attenuated E. ictaluri mutants. This study determined the effects of glycerol concentration (7, 10 and 14% (v/v)) supplemented into freezing medium on post-thaw sperm qualities. Semen was collected from 3 Black Bengal bucks and then pooled to reduce individual variation. Motility, viability, morphology and acrosome integrity were evaluated before and after cryopreservation. Computer-assisted semen analysis was used to assess sperm motion patterns at 0, 1, 2 and 3 hours post-thawing. The laparoscopic artificial insemination was performed to test the fertilizing ability of frozen-thawed semen. The aim of this study was to further examine the mechanisms of ciprofloxacin resistance in Salmonella enterica isolates from pork and patients. Twenty-four isolates including 18 ciprofloxacin- resistant isolates and six susceptible strains were used. Mutations in the quinolone resistance-determining regions (QRDRs) of gyrA, gyrB, parC and parE were examined. Expression of AcrAB-TolC efflux pump was quantitatively determined using qRT-PCR. While nucleotide modifications were found in gyrA, gyrB and parC, all mutations identified were novel. Susceptibility to metronidazole and vancomycin, drugs of choice for Clostridium difficile infection, of 15 C. difficile isolates from 6 healthy Asian elephants was determined. All of the isolates belonged to only 1 ribotype pattern and carried both toxin A and B genes. The Minimal inhibitory concentration range of metronidazole and vancomycin, drugs of choice for treatment of C. difficile infection, was 0.125-4.0 μg/ml and 0.125-2.0 μg/ml, respectively. Moreover, MIC50 and MIC90 for metronidazole were 0.75 and 1.5 μg/ml while vancomycin was 1.0 and 2.0 μg/ml. There was no evidence of resistance to these antimicrobials. Since Eimeria pachylepyron was firstly described in slow loris (Nycticebus coucang) in 1972, there has not been any reports of the disease throughout the world. An adult male 0.8 kg bw greater slow loris (Nycticebus coucang) had diarrhea, emaciation and dead. Severe necro-hemorrhagic jejunitis with the presence of coccidian protozoa and secondary bacterial septicemia were the causes of death. Endogenous stages of E. pachylepyron were detected exclusively in the jejunal enterocytes especially in the crypt of Lieberkühn.
