The present study investigated the association among serum insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I), backfatthickness, and age at first observed estrus in replacement gilts. In total, 80 replacement gilt, Landrace (L, n = 48) andYorkshire (Y, n = 32), were included. The gilts were determined for age at first observed estrus between 167 to 212days of age. They were categorized according to age at first observed estrus into ≤ 200 days (n = 41) and > 200 days (n= 36) groups. The objective of the present study was to investigate urinary protein profiles in dogs with chronic kidney disease (CKD) in comparison to dogs with urinary tract infection (UTI). Animals were divided into 4 groups: control, CKD stages II+III, CKD stage IV and UTI. Blood pressure was measured using oscillometric method. Blood was collected for determinations of packed cell volume (PCV), blood urea nitrogen (BUN) and plasma creatinine concentrations. Urine was collected for urinalysis and protein determination. The aim of the present study was to study the effects of L-cysteine on chilled carp (Cyprinus carpio) semen qualities. Pooled semen samples were prepared from eight fish, and divided into five groups according to the concentrations of L-cysteine as follows: 0 (T1), 0.5 (T2), 1.0 (T3), 1.5 (T4) and 2 (T5) mM. Mutation of the G6S gene in Anglo-Nubian (AN) goat causes non-function of the N-acetylglucosamide 6- sulfatase enzyme within lysosomes, which increases heparin sulfate accumulation and induces pathogenesis of the internal organs. Transversion of base C to T at nucleotide 322 changes decoding of an amino arginine to a stop codon (R322X) and produces a truncated protein. This mutation is detrimental to the health of a goat kid leading to delay in nervous development and death. Toxoplasma gondii (T. gondii) is an important food-borne zoonotic protozoa. Infection occurs when humans and warm-blooded animals consume raw or lightly cooked cysts containing meat or sporulated oocysts contaminated food. To study the subchronic and chronic lung effects of low dose of Diesel Exhaust Particles (DEPs), mice were intratracheally instilled with 50 μg of DEPs. Cellular and biochemical parameters in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) and histological alteration were determined at 90, 120, 150 and 180 days after instillation. From BALF results, exposure to 50 μg of DEPs did not cause any pulmonary inflammation. However, mild to moderate pulmonary changes evidenced by multifocal DEPs laden alveolar macrophages (AMs) aggregation, type II alveolar cell proliferation, thickening of alveolar wall, interstitial fibrosis and edema were observed in treated mouse lungs. Acute and subchronic tests on the toxicity and reproductive effects of aqueous ethanolic extract of rhizomes of Lasia spinosa Thw. was studied in male rats. In the acute test, oral administration of 5, 10, 20, 40 g/kg of the extract showed no mortality or behavioral changes. In the subchronic test, administration of 5 or 20 g/kg of the extract for 28 days revealed no mortality of the animals. No differences in hematological parameters were observed in either control or treatment groups of both tests. In the present decade, kisspeptin has been a fascinating topic in the reproductive spotlight. Kisspeptin is a neuropeptide, produced mainly in the hypothalamus from Kiss1 gene. This gene was initially discovered in 1996 as a tumor suppressor gene in human malignant melanoma. Then in the year 2003, researchers found that mutations of the G protein-coupled receptor (GPR54), which is the strongly cognate receptor of kisspeptin, were associated with hypogonadotropic hypogonadism in mice and humans. This study used Pearson correlation test to analyze statistical correlation between shelter canine intake and number of dogs euthanized in municipal animal shelters in 20 counties/cities in Taiwan from 2001 to 2011. Data of animal shelters were official data provided by the Council of Agriculture, the competent authority of the Animal Protection Act in Taiwan. Among the 20 counties/cities in Taiwan, Hualien County, Penghu County, Keelung City, and Chiayi County were excluded from this study due to incomplete data. The effect of crude extract of wild cape gooseberry, P. minima Linn. on zebra fish, D. rerio, embryo was investigated. Five concentrations (0.01%, 0.1%, 1%, 10% and 20%) of an aqueous crude extract of the plant leaf was prepared and tested with newly spawned embryos in 96 well plates. The observation effect was based on the toxicity endpoint composed of lethal effects, sublethal effects and malformation effects appearing within 144 hours postfertilization (hpf). The present study aimed to identify specific and upregulated proteins in virulent SS2 strain that mightconfer pathogenicity. We performed a comparative proteomic assay to analyze the difference in secretome betweenvirulent SH-08 strain and avirulent SH-YH07 strain. Virulence of tested strains was determined using porcine andzebrafish models. The supernatant from bacterial cultures was collected at early exponential phase (OD600 = 0.4).Proteomic assay identified 52 proteins from the virulent strain supernatant and 29 proteins from the avirulent strainsupernatant. The aim of the study was to elucidate the influence of absence of extra- or intracellular glutamine on the uptake activity of the amino acid transport system A in placental BeWo cells. Extracellular glutamine was absent by culturing the cells in regular medium without glutamine. Iron is a critical cofactor for many enzymes and is known to regulate gene expression in many bacterial pathogens. Streptococcus pneumoniae normally inhabits the upper respiratory mucosa but can also invade and replicate in lungs and blood. These anatomic sites vary considerably in both the quantity and form of available iron. The genome of serotype 4 pneumococcal strain TIGR4 encodes a putative iron-dependent transcriptional regulator (IDTR). In contrast to European countries, the overwhelming majority of dogs in the U.S. are neutered (including spaying), usually done before one year of age. Given the importance of gonadal hormones in growth and development, this cultural contrast invites an analysis of the multiple organ systems that may be adversely affected by neutering. Microtubule transport of herpesvirus capsids from the cell periphery to the nucleus is imperative for viral replication and, in the case of many alphaherpesviruses, transmission into the nervous system. Using the neuroinvasive herpesvirus, pseudorabies virus (PRV), we show that the viral protein 1/2 (VP1/2) tegument protein associates with the dynein/dynactin microtubule motor complex and promotes retrograde microtubule transport of PRV capsids. Functional activation of VP1/2 requires binding to the capsid protein pUL25 or removal of the capsid-binding domain. Mature mammalian sperm contain a complex population of RNAs some of which might regulate spermatogenesis while others probably play a role in fertilization and early development. Due to this limited knowledge, the biological functions of sperm RNAs remain enigmatic. Here we report the first characterization of the global transcriptome of the sperm of fertile stallions. The findings improved understanding of the biological significance of sperm RNAs which in turn will allow the discovery of sperm-based biomarkers for stallion fertility. Of the Orthomyxoviridae family of viruses, only influenza A viruses are thought to exist as multiple subtypes and has nonhuman maintenance hosts. In April 2011, nasal swabs were collected for virus isolation from pigs exhibiting influenza-like illness. Subsequent electron microscopic, biochemical, and genetic studies identified an orthomyxovirus with seven RNA segments exhibiting approximately 50% overall amino acid identity to human influenza C virus. Based on its genetic organizational similarities to influenza C viruses this virus has been provisionally designated C/Oklahoma/1334/2011 (C/OK). A 1.5-year-old second-parity Large Black X Tamworth cross sow from a well-managed 20-sow, unvaccinated, pasture-raised herd of pigs in upstate New York aborted a litter of 7 variably mummified near-term fetuses and stillborn piglets. This sow had no signs of ill health other than abortion; it was housed in a group with 4 other sows and a 2-year-old Gloucestershire Old Spot boar. One of the stillborn piglets from this litter was submitted to the New York State Animal Health Diagnostic Center for necropsy; no placental tissue was submitted with the piglet. Horses were domesticated from the Eurasian steppes 5,000-6,000 years ago. Since then, the use of horses for transportation, warfare, and agriculture, as well as selection for desired traits and fitness, has resulted in diverse populations distributed across the world, many of which have become or are in the process of becoming formally organized into closed, breeding populations (breeds). This report describes the use of a genome-wide set of autosomal SNPs and 814 horses from 36 breeds to provide the first detailed description of equine breed diversity. Intense selective pressures applied over short evolutionary time have resulted in homogeneity within, but substantial variation among, horse breeds. Utilizing this population structure, 744 individuals from 33 breeds, and a 54,000 SNP genotyping array, breed-specific targets of selection were identified using an F(ST)-based statistic calculated in 500-kb windows across the genome. A 5.5-Mb region of ECA18, in which the myostatin (MSTN) gene was centered, contained the highest signature of selection in both the Paint and Quarter Horse.
