Brucellosis is an endemic disease in Pakistan, yet an overall systemic surveillance data of the country is missing. This study aims to determine seroprevalence in domestic livestock population and high and low risk-associated humans of tribal Kurram Agency, Pakistan. This study investigated the efficacy of a recombinant adenovirus vaccine expressing E0-E2 antigens (rAd-E0-E2) of the classical swine fever virus (CSFV) and determined its minimum effective dose in rabbits. Forty rabbits were randomly divided into five groups. Three groups were immunized intramuscularly with rAd-E0-E2 at doses of 107.0, 106.0 and 105.0 IFU, respectively. CSFV C strain was administered to one group and saline to another group (negative control). Fourteen days after immunization, the animals were challenged intramuscularly with CSFV C strain. In order to investigate the levels of oxidative stress (OS) biomarkers and cardiac troponin I (cTnI) in horses with strangles, fifty horses with strangles and twenty healthy controls were included in this study. Blood and serum samples were tested for levels of cardiac troponin I (cTnI), malondialdehyde (MDA), super oxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione (GSH), nitric oxide (NO) and total antioxidant capacity (TAC). Little information is available about the seroprevalence of Mycoplasma ovipneumoniae infection in goats in China. In the present study, the seroprevalence of M. ovipneumoniae infection in goats was investigated in Hunan province, China between September 2015 and September 2016. A total of 750 serum samples collected from 10 herds in various administrative regions in Hunan province, China were evaluated using indirect hemagglutination assay (IHA). Antibodies to M. ovipneumoniae were tested in 234 of 750 serum samples (31.2%) (IHA titer≥1:16). The study aimed to investigate the presence of coccidial oocysts and pathological changes in a dairy herd with the history of coccidial outbreak in Faisalabad District. Fecal samples were collected from 541 animals, including cattle (379) and buffaloes (162), and examined for protozoal infection using flotation techniques. Results revealed 2.9% presence of coccidial oocysts in the samples collected. No significant difference was found in coccidial oocysts count in species of the cattle (2.3%) and buffaloes (4.3%), sex and age group. An uncommon lesion was diagnosed in a 1-year-old female toco toucan (Ramphastos toco albogularis) based on microscopic examinations. Necropsy, histopathology and molecular diagnosis were carried out. At necropsy, possible granulomatous myocarditis was diagnosed in the bird and was confirmed as shown by histopathology. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) revealed an unspecific trematode species as the causative agent. Research on parasitic granulomatous myocarditis in toco toucan has been rarely reported. Therefore, it should be considered during differential diagnosis of avian granuloma cases.

The question of whether the job market can support future graduates of environmental health programs remains an important and difficult question for environmental health programs, current and prospective students, parents, and other stakeholders. Our previous report using 2014 data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics demonstrated anticipated growth and higher than average pay in the profession through at least 2022 for baccalaureate degree holders (Marion & Sinde, 2015). Antibiotics can improve ruminant growth and efficiency by altering rumen fermentation via selective inhibition of microorganisms. However, antibiotic use is increasingly restricted due to concerns about the spread of antibiotic-resistance. Plant-based antimicrobials are alternatives to antibiotics in animal production. The hops plant (Humulus lupulus L.) produces a range of bioactive secondary metabolites, including antimicrobial prenylated phloroglucinols, which are commonly called alpha- and beta-acids. These latter compounds can be considered phyto-ionophores, phytochemicals with a similar antimicrobial mechanism of action to ionophore antibiotics (e.g., monensin, lasalocid). DNA methyltransferase 3A (DNMT3A) is a master epigenetic regulator of benign and malignant hematopoiesis. To dissect the biological consequences of homozygous and heterozygous Dnmt3a inactivation in malignant hematopoiesis, we generated Dnmt3a homozygous null (Dnmt3a^Δ/Δ) and Dnmt3a heterozygous (Dnmt3a^+/–) mice and compared the presentations of hematologic malignancies between cohorts. Bi-allelic inactivation of Dnmt3a results in the presentation of mature lymphoid neoplasms resembling chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL; B220⁺CD19⁺CD5⁺; 88% penetrance (37/42)) and CD8+ peripheral T-cell lymphoma (PTCL; TCRβ⁺CD3⁺CD8⁺CD4^—; 40% penetrance (17/42)). …

Poxviruses have evolved unique proteins and mechanisms to counteract the nuclear factor κB (NF-κB) signaling pathway, which is an essential regulatory pathway of host innate immune responses. Here, we describe a NF-κB inhibitory virion protein of orf virus (ORFV), ORFV073, which functions very early in infected cells. Infection with ORFV073 gene deletion virus (OV-IA82Δ073) led to increased accumulation of NF-κB essential modulator (NEMO), marked phosphorylation of IκB kinase (IKK) subunits IKKα and IKKβ, IκBα and NF-κB subunit p65 (NF-κB-p65), and to early nuclear translocation of NF-κB-p65 in virusinfected cells (30 min post infection). Background: To date, genome-scale analyses in the domestic horse have been limited by suboptimal single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) density and uneven genomic coverage of the current SNP genotyping arrays. The recent availability of whole genome sequences has created the opportunity to develop a next generation, high-density equine SNP array.

There is currently no information regarding Sarcocystis neurona and Neospora hughesi infections in donkeys in Mexico. Here, we determined the presence of antibodies against S. neurona and N. hughesi in donkeys in the northern Mexican state of Durango. Serum samples of 239 domestic donkeys (Equus asinus) were assayed for S. neurona and N. hughesi antibodies using home-made enzyme-linked immunoassays; six (2.5%) of the 239 donkeys tested seropositive for S. neurona. The seroprevalence of S. neurona infection was comparable among donkeys regardless of their origin, health status, or sex. Multivariate analysis showed that seropositivity to S. neurona was …

Background and Objective: Mammalian compact bone is composed mostly of Haversian system. Although there are many studies describing the typical Haversian system in mammals, there are few studies conducted on bones from non-mammalian species. The objective of the current study was to investigate the existence of the typical Haversian system in compact bones from reptiles and birds.

Materials and Methods: Femora were collected from geckos, Nile monitors, sparrows, ducks and geese. Samples were then, fixed in 10% paraformaldehyde and embedded in paraffin. Paraffin sections were stained with hematoxylin and eosin or Von Kossa and then examined using light microscopy.

Because porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) exhibits extensive genetic variation among field isolates, characterizing the extent of cross reactivity of immune responses, and most importantly cell-mediated immunity (CMI), could help in the development of broadly cross-protective vaccines. We infected 12 PRRSV-naïve pigs with PRRSV strain FL12 and determined the number of interferon (IFN)-γ secreting cells (SC) by ELISpot assay using ten type 2 and one type 1 PRRSV isolates as recall antigens. Equine arteritis virus (EAV) has a global impact on the equine industry as the causative agent of equine viral arteritis (EVA), a respiratory, systemic, and reproductive disease of equids. A distinctive feature of EAV infection is that it establishes long-term persistent infection in 10 to 70% of infected stallions (carriers). In these stallions, EAV is detectable only in the reproductive tract, and viral persistence occurs despite the presence of high serum neutralizing antibody titers. GRID directs alternating regions of high- and low-dose radiation at tumors. A large animal model mimicking the geometries of human treatments is needed to complement existing rodent systems (eg, microbeam) and clarify the physical and biological attributes of GRID. A pilot study was undertaken in pet dogs with spontaneous soft tissue sarcomas to characterize responses to GRID. Subjects were treated with either 20 Gy (3 dogs) or 25 Gy (3 dogs), delivered using 6 MV X-rays and a commercial GRID collimator. The objective of this study was to investigate the expression levels of miR-29a and IFN-γ in pigs that received modified live PRRSV vaccine.
