Operational Planning Of Supply Chains In A Production And Distribution Center With Just-In-Time Delivery, Pablo Biswas, Bhaba Sarker

Faculty Publications

Purpose: A supply chain consists of raw material suppliers, manufacturers and retailers where inventory of raw materials and finished goods are involved, respectively. Therefore, it is important to find optimal solutions, which are beneficial for both supplier, manufacturer and retailer.

Design/methodology/approach: This research focuses on a semi-continuous manufacturing facility by assuming that the production of succeeding cycle starts immediately after the production of preceding cycle. In reality, the inventory of a supply chain system may not be completely empty. A number of products may be left over after the deliveries are made. These leftover inventories are added to the next …

A Numerical And Experimental Study On Effect Of Composition Of Ar-N2 Shielding Gas On The Weld Bead Profile And Its Prediction For Hot Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing, Niraj Pudasaini

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Wire arc additive manufacturing is a process of making three-dimensional metal parts in a layer-by-layer approach using a feed wire and electric arc as a heat source. Wire arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) is becoming more popular due to its ability to create complex 3D parts, less build time, high deposition rate, and significant cost savings. Out of the many parameters used in WAAM, one of the important parameters is shielding gas which plays a significant role in material quality, properties, and defects. In this study, a controlled amount of Argon (Ar) and Nitrogen (N2) shielding gases are used …

Finite Time Suboptimal Control Design Of Nonlinear Systems With Θ-D Technique And Implementation To Aerospace Applications, Jie Yao

Doctoral Dissertations

“A finite time suboptimal control strategy (named θ - D approximated algorithm) was proposed in this study, which can provide the control engineers with a novel effective and efficient design tool from the finite time optimal perspective. Based on the framework of this proposed method, the original nonlinear dynamics were formulated in pseudo-linear form, and the performance index was denoted by a linear quadratic regulator prototype in this research. After that, the approximated solutions to intractable Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman (HJB) equation were acquired by putting vanishing perturbation terms into the performance index. By tuning the parameters in perturbation terms, semi-global stability and …

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Direct numerical simulations (DNS) of flat-plate, zero-pressure-gradient turbulent boundary layers are presented for nominal freestream Mach numbers of 11 and 14 and a highly cooled wall (wall-to-recovery temperature of approximately 0.2). The flow conditions of the DNS are representative of the experimental data for a Mach 11.1 turbulent boundary layer on a flat plate that was tested at Calspan–University of Buffalo Research Center (CUBRC) and the operational conditions of the AEDC Hypervelocity Tunnel No. 9 at Mach 14. The wall shear stress and turbulent heat flux predicted by DNS show good comparisons with those measured at CUBRC and those modeled …

Information-Based Particle Flow For High Uncertainty Estimation, Kari C. Ward, Kyle J. Demars Jan 2020

Information-Based Particle Flow For High Uncertainty Estimation, Kari C. Ward, Kyle J. Demars

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This work presents a new formulation of the Gaussian particle flow filter derived using an information theoretic approach. The developed information flow addresses two problems with Gaussian particle flow: the lack of inherent meaning in the flow parameters and the inability to easily include modifications for a non-Bayesian update. Equivalency between Gaussian particle flow and information flow is established using a linear, Gaussian example. An orbit determination simulation with high initial uncertainty is used to demonstrate the consistent, robust performance of the information flow filter in situations where the extended Kalman filter fails.

The Effect Of Thermal History On The Atomic Structure Andmechanical Properties Of Amorphous Alloys, Nikolai V. Priezjev Jan 2020

The Effect Of Thermal History On The Atomic Structure Andmechanical Properties Of Amorphous Alloys, Nikolai V. Priezjev

Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications

The influence of thermal processing on the potential energy, atomic structure, and mechanical properties of metallic glasses is examined using molecular dynamics simulations. We study the three-dimensional binary mixture, which was first relaxed near the glass transition temperature and zero pressure, and then rapidly cooled deep into the glass phase. It was found that glasses annealed at higher temperatures are relocated to higher energy states and their average glass structure remains more disordered, as reflected in the height of the first two peaks in the pair distribution function. The results of mechanical testing demonstrate that both the shear modulus and …

Detailed Energy Efficiency Strategies For Converting An Existing Office Building To Nzeb: A Case Study In The Pacific Northwest, Ali Alajmi, Abby Short, Janna Ferguson, Kalina K. Vander Poel, Corey T. Griffin

Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

This paper is an attempt to identify a methodology for converting conventional energy consumption buildings to net-zero energy buildings (NZEB). The first step was rather different from the usual energy audit, which is to analyze a facility’s energy consumptions from both macro- and micro-scales. To implement such an approach, a governmental office building (Metro) in Portland, OR, was chosen as a case study. After a building model was validated against a real measurement, it was then used to evaluate different energy efficiency strategies (EESs) so as to reduce the energy consumption. The EESs showed a reduction in energy use intensity …

Partnering Undergraduate Engineering Students With Preservice Teachers To Design And Teach An Elementary Engineering Lesson Through Ed+Gineering, Kristie Gutierrez, Stacie I. Ringleb, Jennifer Jill Kidd, Orlando M. Ayala, Pilar Pazos, Krishnanand Kaipa

Teaching & Learning Faculty Publications

Major challenges in engineering education include retention of undergraduate engineering students (UESs) and continued engagement after the first year when concepts increase in difficulty. Additionally, employers, as well as ABET, look for students to demonstrate non-technical skills, including the ability to work successfully in groups, the ability to communicate both within and outside their discipline, and the ability to find information that will help them solve problems and contribute to lifelong learning. Teacher education is also facing challenges given the recent incorporation of engineering practices and core ideas into the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and state level standards of …

Virtual Experiments For Engineering Education, Amy P. Lebanoff Jan 2020

Virtual Experiments For Engineering Education, Amy P. Lebanoff

Honors Undergraduate Theses

In-person engineering instruction relies on the availability of equipment and space. Cost, safety, and scheduling may pose barriers to conducting in-person labs. Virtual experiments may be used to enhance the student experience by, for example, incorporating pre-labs for in-person experiments and providing access to equipment that cannot be safely used in-person. Virtual learning is used in many fields, but there remain questions as to how it should be employed in engineering, an area largely reliant on in-person lab and classroom setups. Earlier studies reviewed the advantages of virtual labs such as demonstrating hard-to-observe phenomena and allowing unlimited trials. This project …

Maximizing Bass Reflex System Performance Through Optimization Of Port Geometry, Bryce Doll Jan 2020

Maximizing Bass Reflex System Performance Through Optimization Of Port Geometry, Bryce Doll

Honors Undergraduate Theses

A bass-reflex system is a type of loudspeaker design that uses a port or a vent to improve low-frequency performance. The port acts as a Helmholtz resonator which extends the bass response of the system. However, at high drive levels, the air inside the port can become turbulent and cause distortion, noise, and compression. From previous works, it is known that the geometry of the port plays a crucial role in reducing these unwanted effects. This paper serves to provide more insight into optimal port shape by performing several objective tests on a group of 5 different prototype port shapes …

Applied Laser Absorption Spectroscopy For Sensing In Detonative Flows, Kyle Thurmond Jan 2020

Applied Laser Absorption Spectroscopy For Sensing In Detonative Flows, Kyle Thurmond

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

A great deal of interest lies in detonative combustion due to its destructive potential and the theoretical thermodynamic advantages over traditional deflagration devices used for propulsion and energy. High energy materials and explosives combustion products and temperature must be characterized to gain greater insight into the energy release mechanisms, allowing for more tailored deployment. Predictive models for detonations employ various types of state equations, and temperature can be used as a check on the equation validity. However, the extreme environment of explosives is incredibly challenging to evaluate temperature. Additionally, these reactions are extremely fast, taking place over microseconds, and have …

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

Machine learning is a promising approach to evaluate human movement based on wearable sensor data. A representative dataset for training data-driven models is crucial to ensure that the model generalizes well to unseen data. However, the acquisition of sufficient data is time-consuming and often infeasible. We present a method to create realistic inertial sensor data with corresponding biomechanical variables by 2D walking and running simulations. We augmented a measured inertial sensor dataset with simulated data for the training of convolutional neural networks to estimate sagittal plane joint angles, joint moments, and ground reaction forces (GRFs) of walking and running. When …

Atv Dynamics And Pediatric Rider Safety, James T. Auxier Ii Jan 2020

Atv Dynamics And Pediatric Rider Safety, James T. Auxier Ii

Theses and Dissertations--Biomedical Engineering

It has been observed through numerous academic and governmental agency studies that pediatric all-terrain vehicle ridership carries significant risk of injury and death. While no doubt valuable to safety, the post-hoc approach employed in these studies does little to explain the why and how behind the risk factors. Furthermore, there has been no prolonged, widespread, organized, and concerted effort to reconstruct and catalog the details and causes of the large (20,000+) number of ATV-related injuries that occur each year as has been done for road-based motor vehicle accidents. This dissertation takes the opposite approach from a meta-analysis and instead examines …

Effects Of A Hip Orthosis On Lumbopelvic Coordination In Individuals With And Without Low Back Pain, Colin Drury Jan 2020

Effects Of A Hip Orthosis On Lumbopelvic Coordination In Individuals With And Without Low Back Pain, Colin Drury

Theses and Dissertations--Biomedical Engineering

Individuals with low back pain (LBP) demonstrate an abnormal lumbopelvic coordination compared to back-healthy individuals. This abnormal coordination presents itself as a reduction in lumbar contribution and an increase in pelvic contribution to trunk motion. This study investigated the ability of a hip orthosis to correct such an abnormal lumbo-pelvic coordination by restricting pelvic rotation and, as a result, increasing lumbar contributions. The effects of the hip orthosis on the magnitude and timing characteristics of lumbopelvic coordination were investigated in 20 patients with LBP and 20 asymptomatic controls. The orthosis significantly increased lumbar contributions by 11%, 5.42%, 4.84%, and 4.89% …

Correlating The Physicochemical Properties Of Magnesium Stearate With Tablet Dissolution And Lubrication, Julie L. Calahan Jan 2020

Correlating The Physicochemical Properties Of Magnesium Stearate With Tablet Dissolution And Lubrication, Julie L. Calahan

Theses and Dissertations--Pharmacy

Magnesium stearate (MgSt) is the most commonly used pharmaceutical excipient and is present in over half the tablet formulations on the market. In spite of its popularity as an effective lubricant, it has been repeatedly recognized that there is significant variability between MgSt samples, which can cause inconsistent lubrication between batches of MgSt. The hypothesis of this research is that the batch-to-batch variability in tablet lubrication and dissolution observed in tablet formulations containing different MgSt samples can be correlated with differences in MgSt physicochemical properties (fatty acid salt composition, crystal hydrate form, particle size and surface area). Developing correlations between …

Numerical And Experimental Studies Of Blocked Force Determination On An Offset Interface For Plate And Shell Structures And Duct Acoustic Systems, Keyu Chen Jan 2020

Numerical And Experimental Studies Of Blocked Force Determination On An Offset Interface For Plate And Shell Structures And Duct Acoustic Systems, Keyu Chen

Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering

Blocked force determination is an alternative to the more routine method of inverse force determination using classical transfer path analysis. One advantage of determining blocked forces is that there is no need for the source to be detached or isolated from the system. Another advantage is that calculated blocked forces are appropriate when modifications are made on the receiver side of the interface. This insures that the blocked forces are suitable for utilization in analysis models where receiver system modifications are considered. Difficulties in using the approach arise when interface locations are difficult to instrument. This thesis demonstrates that blocked …

Coarse-Grained Dynamically Accurate Simulations Of Ionic Liquids At Vacuum-Interface, Tyler D. Stoffel Jan 2020

Coarse-Grained Dynamically Accurate Simulations Of Ionic Liquids At Vacuum-Interface, Tyler D. Stoffel

Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering

Ionic liquids, possessing improved properties in many areas of technical application, are excellent candidates as components in development of next-generation technology, including ultra-high energy batteries. If they are thus applied, however, extensive interfacial analysis of any selected ionic configuration will likely be required. Molecular dynamics (MD) provides an advantageous route by which this may be accomplished, but can fall short in observing some phenomena only present at larger time/length scales than it can simulate. Often times this is approached by coarse-graining (CG), with which scope of simulation can be significantly increased. However, coarse-grained MD systems are generally known to produce …

Modeling Thin Fluid Film On A Rotary Bell, Mark Doerre Jan 2020

Modeling Thin Fluid Film On A Rotary Bell, Mark Doerre

Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering

A component of the mission in the Institute of Research for Technology Development at the University of Kentucky is advancing research and development and bringing it to the factory floor for continuous improvement. This dissertation delves into the art and science of rotational fluid mechanics in the context of rotary bell atomizers. One outcome proves that an approximation for calculating fluid film thicknesses on high-speed spinning surfaces inferred while working in cylindrical and spherical coordinate systems can be applied to an arbitrary bell profile. However, the analytical limits of this approximation were not investigated. In all cases, a restriction exists …

Molten Aluminum Capillary Hole-Filling, Cheng-Nien Yu Jan 2020

Molten Aluminum Capillary Hole-Filling, Cheng-Nien Yu

Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering

The presence of micrometeoroids and space debris in open space raises the question of a mitigation of the damage caused by a possible impact on the man-made structures such as space shuttles, satellites, and the International Space Station. A method achieving metallic sealed hole would be of an interest for development. This dissertation studies a surface tension driven capillary filling/sealing phenomenon in a controlled atmosphere brazing process of aluminum. The filled vs. non-filled results are predictable using minimization of energy, which shows that the outcomes depend heavily on prescribed configurations of the hole. Equilibrium models show excellent agreement with experimental …

Electrophoresis In Heterogeneous Hydrogels And Applications In Surface Patterning, Ning Ge Jan 2020

Electrophoresis In Heterogeneous Hydrogels And Applications In Surface Patterning, Ning Ge

Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering

The creation of chemical micropatterns on surfaces makes it possible to add unique chemical functionality to surfaces, modifying properties such as wettability, or even adding the ability to selectively bind other molecules. The creation of biochemical surface patterning in particular is useful in a variety of fields including tissue engineering and highthroughput drug screening. There are many existing surface patterning techniques which focus on precise control over the patterned geometry, even down to submicron scale features, but they do not allow local control over chemical concentration. So the results are high resolution patterns with binary concentration. There are also existing …

Filtered-Dynamic-Inversion Control For Unknown Minimum-Phase Systems With Unknown Relative Degree, Sumit Suryakant Kamat Jan 2020

Filtered-Dynamic-Inversion Control For Unknown Minimum-Phase Systems With Unknown Relative Degree, Sumit Suryakant Kamat

Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering

We present filtered-dynamic-inversion (FDI) control for unknown linear time-invariant systems that are multi-input multi-output and minimum phase with unknown-but-bounded relative degree. This FDI controller requires limited model information, specifically, knowledge of an upper bound on the relative degree and knowledge of the first nonzero Markov parameter. The FDI controller is a single-parameter high-parameter-stabilizing controller that is robust to uncertainty in the relative degree. We characterize the stability of the closed-loop system. We present numerical examples, where the FDI controller is implemented in feedback with mathematical and physical systems. The numerical examples demonstrate that the FDI controller for unknown relative degree …

The Influence Of Cryogenic Machining On Surface Integrity And Functional Performance Of Titanium Alloys For Biomedical And Aerospace Applications, Ying Sun Jan 2020

The Influence Of Cryogenic Machining On Surface Integrity And Functional Performance Of Titanium Alloys For Biomedical And Aerospace Applications, Ying Sun

Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering

The excellent properties of titanium alloys such as high strength, as well as good corrosion and fatigue resistance are desirable for the biomedical and aerospace industry. However, the same properties that make titanium alloys desirable in high-performance applications also make these space-age materials “difficult-to-machine” materials, as the titanium alloys exhibit high cutting temperatures because of their high strength and low thermal conductivity.

Cryogenic machining is a severe plastic deformation (SPD) processes which uses liquid nitrogen as the coolant to take away the heat generated during machining in a relatively short time. Cryogenic machining can significantly reduce the cutting temperatures at …

Influence Of Size Effects On Surface Generation During Finish Machining And Surface Integrity In Ti-6al-4v, Ian S. Brown Jan 2020

Influence Of Size Effects On Surface Generation During Finish Machining And Surface Integrity In Ti-6al-4v, Ian S. Brown

Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering

Finish machining is an essential manufacturing process that is used to enhance the mechanical characteristics of critical components. The deformation that occurs at the tool and workpiece interface in finish machining significantly affects a host of component properties, commonly referred to as “surface integrity” properties. Surface roughness is a machining deformation-affected characteristic that is of high relevance in contemporary manufacturing. However, over recent decades it has been made clear that the material properties of the deformed surface layers are relevant to component performance as well. Predicting the overall surface quality of a machined component is of great relevance to the …
