An In-Situ Method For Quantifying Entropy Generation In Fatigue Via A Novel Thermographic Approach, Peyton J. Wilson
LSU Master's Theses
This work features a new approach that is used to measure the rate of plastic work during a cyclic fatigue test, based on the first and second laws of thermodynamics. Using the one-dimensional Fourier heat equation coupled with the concept of fracture fatigue entropy, the rate of plastic work during fatigue can be measured without the need to interrupt a fatigue test, and the accumulated entropy to failure can be quantified. Experimental fatigue tests are conducted on Aluminum 6061-T6 specimens under cyclic axial loading and Carbon Steel 1018 specimens under fully reversed cyclic bending loading. The obtained results in addition …

Multiscale Analysis Of Thermal Barrier Coated Cfrp Composites Under Thermal Loading, Devin Nielsen, Trenton M. Ricks, Juhyeong Lee
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Student Publications and Presentations
Carbon-fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites are commonly used in high performance applications. Although offering several advantages (i.e., superior specific properties and improved structural rigidity), traditional CFRP composites often exhibit poor thermal stability due to a low matrix thermal decomposition temperature. The effective operating temperature of the CFRP composites can be raised by applying an outermost, protective thermal barrier coating (TBC) layer. Prefabricated high void content ceramic TBCs are ideal for composite applications due to their high thermal stability and relatively low thermal conductivity. In this paper, the thermo-mechanical response of the TBCCFRP composite laminate subjected to 500°C are assessed through …

Discovery of new materials plays a critical role in developing advanced high-temperature thermoelectric (TE) applications. Transition metal oxides (TMOs) are one of the attractive candidates for high-temperature TE applications due to their thermal and chemical stability. However, the trade-off relationship between thermopower (S) and electrical conductivity (σ) limits the maximum attainable power factor (PF), thereby hindering improvements in TE conversion efficiency. To overcome this trade-off relationship, the emerging approach of the redox-driven metal exsolution in TMOs shows promise in improving both S and σ. However, the effect of metal exsolution with different particle sizes and …

Transition Of Buoyancy-Driven Flow From An Axisymmetric To Non-Axisymmetric Vortex Inside An Evaporating Sessile Droplet, Jialing Yu, Zhenhai Pan, Justin A. Weibel
CTRC Research Publications
The internal flow within an evaporating sessile droplet has intriguing fluid mechanics important to various microfluidics applications. In the present study, a phenomenon is observed through numerical methods wherein the buoyancy-driven flow structure inside a droplet on a non-wetting substrate transitions from an axisymmetric toroidal vortex flow to a non-axisymmetric single vortex flow with increase in the substrate temperature. As the axisymmetric nature of the droplet flow field and evaporation characteristics are broken, the internal velocity accelerates significantly. The transition, which is attributed to a flow instability inside the droplet, is more prone to occur as the droplet volume or …

Wave energy holds significant promise as a renewable energy source due to the consistent and predictable nature of ocean waves. However, optimizing wave energy devices is essential for achieving competitive viability in the energy market. This paper presents the application of a nonlinear model predictive controller (MPC) to enhance the energy extraction of a heaving point absorber. The wave energy converter (WEC) model accounts for the nonlinear dynamics and static Froude–Krylov forces, which are essential in accurately representing the system’s behavior. The nonlinear MPC is tested under irregular wave conditions within the power production region, where constraints on displacement and …

Halide and cation engineering of organic–inorganic hybrid perovskites has shown a great potential for structural modulation of perovskites and enhancing their optoelectronic properties. Here, we studied the impact of Cl/Br halide engineering on the structural and piezoelectric properties of MA/Cs mixed-cation Cu-perovskite crystals. X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, and 133Cs solid-state NMR were utilized to find out the nature of the perovskite crystal structure formation. Three distinct crystal structures were obtained depending on the Cl/Br content. High Cl content resulted in the formation of Br-doped (Cs/MA)CuCl3 perovskite with the presence of paramagnetic Cu2+ ions. High Br content led to the formation …

Propagation Of Stress Shock Waves In Elastoplastic Continuous Media With Spherical Symmetry, Abdimital Nabiyevich Nabiyev, Abdumalik Abdumurodovich Nabiyev
Technical science and innovation
The article examines the motion caused by the explosion of a spherical charge in elastoplastic continuous media. When a charge explodes, it is assumed that the charge instantly turns into a high-pressure gas without changing its volume, and this gas spreads into the environment, forming a shock wave with spherical symmetry. Taking into account the presence of tangential stresses in inclined areas, equations of one-dimensional dynamic motion of soil are derived, according to which the patterns of propagation of shock waves in soil massifs during an explosion with spherical symmetry are studied. To find the limiting state of the soil, …

Study Of The Synthesis Mechanism And Some Properties Of Oligomers Based On Epichlorohydrin And Diphenylguanidine, Rovshan Israilovich Ismailov, Normuhamad Edgarov, Alisher Israilovich Ismailov
Technical science and innovation
In this work, the synthesis and the scheme for obtaining an oligomer based on epiiodhydrin with diphenylguanidine were studied, the proportions of epiiodhydrin in the initial mixture, the yield of oligomers, and the reduced viscosity were studied. The results of spectroscopic and elemental analyzes are obtained, which show that changes in the ratio of monomers have almost no effect on the iodine content in the oligomer. This is apparently due to the fact that epiiodhydrin is much more active in reactions than amino compounds. By studying the degree of conversion on the viscosity of the oligomerization products, the effects on …
