Effect Of Catalyst Bed Configuration On Temperature Profile And Reactor Performance For Fischer-Tropsch Synthesis : A Computational Fluid Dynamics Simulation, Natthasit Khawyen

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

This research investigates the performance of the Fischer–Tropsch reaction in a fixed-bed reactor packed with spiral-structured catalysts using COMSOL Multiphysics to evaluate heat management, hot spot reduction, and the enhancement of high-value product selectivity. The study comprises two main scenarios. The first examines the effects of tube spacing and number of tubes in a multitube reactor arranged in a hexagonal pattern using a 20% Co/SiO₂ spiral-structured catalyst. In models R1–R4, which contain a fixed number of 10 tubes, tube spacing was found to have only a limited influence on temperature distribution; all models still exhibited a hot spot near the …

Tailoring The Intrinsic Properties Of Polypropylene/Polypropylene Carbonate Blends Using Epoxidized Natural Rubber As A Bio-Based Compatibilizer, Patsita Suphansomboon

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

The goal of this study was to enhance the biocompatibility of polypropylene/polypropylene carbonate (PP/PP) polymer blends by varying amounts of epoxidized natural rubber (ENR). This study focuses on determining how ENR concentration affects the interface and final properties of the polymer blend. A comprehensive analysis of the physical, mechanical, thermal, chemical, and dynamic mechanical properties, as well as the rheological properties of the PP/PPC system, was conducted to assess structural changes and property evolution within the PP/PPC system. The experimental results revealed that ENR can interact with PPC, resulting in a reduced domain size and a more uniform distribution. This …

Evaluating Co2 Storage Criteria : Focusing On Thailand's Petroleum Basins For Carbon Storage, Paul Tivere Benjamin Jan 2025

Evaluating Co2 Storage Criteria : Focusing On Thailand's Petroleum Basins For Carbon Storage, Paul Tivere Benjamin

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Anthropogenic carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from large point sources remain central to Thailand’s climate challenge, and geological carbon capture and storage (CCS) is now included in national mitigation plans. However, Thailand still lacks a transparent way to compare candidate saline aquifers and petroleum basins in terms of storage performance, containment, and socio-economic conditions, while allowing for uneven data quality. This thesis develops a Thailand-specific, two-stage framework that combines threshold-based screening with a multi-criteria ranking framework based on the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) and Data Confidence Scores (DCS). Twenty-one criteria in three groups (capacity and injectivity, containment, and socio-economic constraints) were …

This research aims to develop a comprehensive simulation model of a hydrogen production process, integrating gasification, water-gas shift (WGS), acid gas removal, and hydrogen purification using the software simulator. The model predicts hydrogen product gas composition from Mae-Moh lignite under …

A Novel Hydrothermal Synthesis Process Of Mil-53(Al) Using Bamboo Biochar As A Sustainable Precursor For Co₂ Adsorption, Pisit Phayutcharoenkun Jan 2025

A Novel Hydrothermal Synthesis Process Of Mil-53(Al) Using Bamboo Biochar As A Sustainable Precursor For Co₂ Adsorption, Pisit Phayutcharoenkun

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Among the numerous MOFs members, MIL-53 (Al) framework is one of the most interesting structures due to the breathing effect and has been widely investigated for hydrogen storage and water treatment. It is built up by the interconnection of infinite trans chains of corner-sharing AlO4(OH)2 octahedral by 1,4-benzenedicarboxylate ligands. MIL-53 crystallizes in a “wine rack” structure (Pnma, a = 17.129(2) Å, b = 6.628(1) Å, c = 12.182(1) Å, α = β = γ = 90°) with large internal pores held open by excess solvent and unreacted ligand in the as-synthesized state. Another challenge is the synthesis process and raw …

Suppressing Bromine Volatilization In Anthraquinone–Bromine Flow Batteries Using A Low-Cost Quaternary-Ammonium Complexing Agent, Prapassorn Areebumrungsuk Jan 2025

Suppressing Bromine Volatilization In Anthraquinone–Bromine Flow Batteries Using A Low-Cost Quaternary-Ammonium Complexing Agent, Prapassorn Areebumrungsuk

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

The deployment of anthraquinone-bromine redox flow batteries (AQBFBs) is hindered by the volatilization and corrosiveness of bromine (Br2), which elevates safety risks, causes active species loss, and reduces Coulombic Efficiency (CE). This study investigates the use of the low-cost additive 3-chloro-2-hydroxypropyltrimethylammonium chloride (CHA) as a bromine-complexing agent to mitigate these issues. The CHA additive utilizes a quaternary ammonium group to electrostatically associate with bromine and polybromide species, forming stable CHA-Brn complexes. Simultaneously, its hydroxyl functionality enhances solubility in the aqueous electrolyte, which promoted the self-recovery of this oil phase to the aqueous phase and, in turn, suppresses bromine vapor pressure …

Modeling Ion-Specific Effects In Polyelectrolyte Brushes: A Modified Poisson-Nernst-Planck Model, William J. Ceely, Marina Chugunova, Ali Nadim, James D. Sterling

Business and Information Technology Faculty Research & Creative Works

Polyelectrolyte brushes consist of a set of charged linear macromolecules, each tethered at one end to a surface. An example is the glycocalyx which refers to hair-like negatively charged sugar molecules that coat the outside membrane of all cells. We consider the transport and equilibrium distribution of ions and the resulting electrical potential when such a brush is immersed in a salt buffer containing monovalent cations (sodium and/or potassium). The Gouy-Chapman model for ion screening at a charged surface captures the effects of the Coulombic force that drives ion electrophoresis and diffusion but neglects non-Coulombic forces and ion pairing. Electrical Homeostasis Of The Inner Mitochondrial Membrane Potential, Peyman Fahimi, Lázaro A. M. Castanedo, P. Thomas Vernier, Cherif F. Matta

Bioelectrics Publications

The electric potential across the inner mitochondrial membrane must be maintained within certain bounds for the proper functioning of the cell. A feedback control mechanism for the homeostasis of this membrane potential is proposed whereby an increase in the electric field decreases the rate-limiting steps of the electron transport chain (ETC). An increase in trans-membrane electric field limits the rate of proton pumping to the inter-membrane gap by slowing the ETC reactions and by intrinsically induced electroporation that depolarizes the inner membrane. The proposed feedback mechanism is akin to a Le Chatelier's-type principle of trans-membrane potential feedback control.

Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering

Precise fluid transport through microscale geometries can help optimize electrochemical and biochemical processes by maximizing the mass transfer rate of reactants. By introducing intricate structural features inside microchannels, it is possible to manipulate the fluid motion and direct the flow towards any surface of interest. In this study, we have demonstrated that rationally designed fluid pathways can improve the performance of electrochemical and biochemical systems.

The emergence of additive manufacturing has enabled rapid fabrication of robust structures with intricate features to guide fluid motion. However, their application in nonaqueous electrochemical systems has been limited due to their interaction with organic …

Inflammation plays a key role in cartilage damage that occurs in osteoarthritis (OA). However, in vitro assessments of tissue-engineered constructs for cartilage regeneration generally do not consider their performance in the presence of inflammation. In this work, the chondrogenic differentiation potential of mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) was evaluated in the presence of both chondrogenic factors and inflammatory cytokines, and cartilage formation, degradative response, and inflammatory response were characterized. The addition of cytokines reduced cartilage production, increased cell proliferation, and resulted in an increase in inflammatory markers. Incorporation of hyaluronic acid (HA) had little impact on both collagen fibril microstructure and …

Multi-Scale Dynamic Modeling, Validation, And Uncertainty Quantification Of Radial Flow Fixed Bed Contactors For Co2 Capture, Ana Flávia De Alencar Arraes Monteiro

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

One of the key sources of carbon dioxide emissions to the environment is fossil fuel combustion for power generation. Post-combustion CO2 capture using amine-based solvents is currently the most matured process. However, amines are corrosive and lead to degradation products at even moderate temperatures generating environmental pollutants, and require high energy for regeneration. Solid sorbents are a promising alternative. They possess lower regeneration energy, thermal stability, and have highly tunable porous structures with large surface area that can help in achieving high loading and high adsorption rates. This work focuses on mathematical modeling of CO2 adsorption/desorption processes using solid sorbents. …

Efficiently designed gel treatments play a vital role in extending the lifespan of brownfields through rejuvenating oil production. Recently, a three-mode mathematical methodology named the VCR approach has been proposed for designing effective treatments. To optimize this approach, it is crucial to determine the appropriate design mode systematically rather than relying solely on the intuitive judgments of field operators. This study introduces an advanced methodology for predicting the optimal design type of gel treatments using 12 reservoir and production variables. The methodology integrates ensemble machine-learning (EML) models with historical data from 65 field projects across 11 countries (1985-2020). The Random …

Development And Characterization Of Polysaccharide-Based Controlled Drug Delivery Platforms, Amanda Pepler Jan 2025

Development And Characterization Of Polysaccharide-Based Controlled Drug Delivery Platforms, Amanda Pepler

Open Access Dissertations

Drug delivery research focuses on overcoming challenges in patient treatment. Most therapeutics are delivered systemically through oral or intravenous routes. However, these administration methods are often inefficient due to therapeutic hydrophobicity, poor bioavailability, and liver metabolic clearance, necessitating frequent dosing. When treatment plans require frequent dosing, patients experience significant fluctuations in therapeutic concentration in the bloodstream, which can increase adverse side effects. These factors contribute to low patient compliance. Therefore, the core focus of drug delivery research is to develop new administration routes for therapeutics. Drug delivery systems (DDS) that can target therapeutics to a localized region offer advantages over …

How Many Passes Does It Take? An Investigation To Determine The Optimal Number Of Liposome Extrusion Cycles, Kasey Piper

Honors Theses

Liposomes are lipid-based nanoparticles with significant applications in drug delivery and membrane research. One of the most common methods for fabricating liposomes of specific sizes is membrane extrusion, where liposomes are passed through porous membranes to reduce their size. The precise number of passes needed and the factors influencing this process remain unclear. This thesis investigates the relationship between the number of passes through a track-etched polycarbonate membrane and size and lamellarity of extruded liposomes with a focus on lipid type (DOPC, DMPC, Soy PC), membrane pore size (50, 100, 200, 400 nm), and the effect of freeze-thaw cycling. To …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

The increasing demand for sustainable energy solutions has driven the exploration of alternative fuels, such as coal–biomass briquettes, which combine the benefits of both coal and renewable biomass sources. This study focuses on the development and characterization of sustainable coal–biomass briquettes made from sub-bituminous coal (SubC) and Levistona chinensis seed biomass, with the aim of reducing environmental impact and enhancing combustion properties. Briquettes were produced by varying the coal-to-biomass ratios (90:0–0:90), with 10% corn starch used as a binder. Proximate analysis revealed that increasing biomass content raised moisture (5.85%–14.25%) and volatile matter (VM; 24.75%–32.5%), while reducing ash (15.75%–3.39%) and fixed …

With increasing concern regarding global warming contributions by fossil fuels in petrochemical production, the potential use of biomass-derived molecules to serve as a more eco-friendly feedstock has grown in popularity. Specifically, sebacic acid, a versatile chemical used to produce nylons, plasticizers, and lubricants, has the potential to be obtained from bio-renewable feedstocks and alleviate environmental drawbacks from fossil fuel petrochemical production. Our research validates the catalytic conversion of the biomass-derived 2,2’-bifuran 5,5’-dicarboxylate (BFDCM) to sebacic acid (SA), through M-MOx catalyzed hydrogenation and hydrodeoxygenation. Catalytic activity tests were conducted for four different Pd-supported catalysts (C, Al2O3, …

Mxene Based Composite Phase Change Materials For Thermal Energy Storage Applications: Featuring Bio-Mimic Approaches, Md Shahriar Mohtasim, Barun K. Das

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Phase change materials (PCMs) are widely used in thermal energy storage systems, but their underlying drawbacks, such as poor heat conductivity and phase transition leakage, make them unsuitable for widespread use. MXenes have received a lot of curiosity due to having extraordinary mechanical properties, high electrical conductivity, and unique layered structure. Owing to the exquisite arrangements, numerous unique biomimetic morphologies have drawn attention. Numerous investigations regarding bio-mimic MXene/PCM composites (BMX-CPCMs) have found improvements in latent heat up to 106.50 % on average, along with excellent thermal stability with no matrix leakage in 500 cycles and an upsurge in thermal conductivity …

Advances, Limitations, And Future Perspectives In 3d Printing Of Porous Glasses: A Technical Note, Hamed Bakhtiari, Mostafa Omidi Bidgoli, Mohammad Hosseini

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

In this study, the latest developments in 3D printing of porous glasses are discussed. Current challenges in 3D printing of porous-based microfluidic devices mostly include the printing resolution which is correlated with the processing time, post treating, and developing tailored materials for porous glasses. Although the latter issue has been resolved to some extent recently, the former has remained a challenge. Currently, the smallest 3D printed feature in a microfluidic structure is 200µm while higher resolutions are required in some applications. On the other hand, previous reports have shown intensive printing time for higher resolutions. To achieve an optimal compromise, …
