The present thesis carries out a comparative analysis of the episode maese Pedro, included in the second part of Miguel de Cervantes’s Don Quixote (1615), and Luigi Pirandello’s Six Characters in Search of an Author (1921) in order to explore the resonance of Cervantes in Pirandello’s play. Particular attention is paid to the dramatic techniques developed by Cervantes in his narrative and their reflection in the work of the Italian playwright and Nobel laureate. Drawing on previous studies that have addressed the influence of Cervantes on Pirandello and emphasizing the two-way influence between the Spanish and the Italian literary traditions …

Tradicionalmente, el estudio del microrrelato se ha centrado en la discusión de aspectos tales como su caracterización, evolución histórica y estatus genérico. Este trabajo parte de la premisa de que son necesarios nuevos enfoques y por ello indaga en algunas cuestiones axiológicas y éticas en torno al microrrelato. Teniendo como punto de partida el concepto del “saber vivir”, según lo propone Ottmar Ette, se plantea la existencia de un microrrelato del saber vivir normativo-descriptivo que difiere de la correlación que Ette establece entre microficción y “saber vivir”. En mi comunicación se analiza la incorporación de elementos de dos clásicos del cine negro, Vértigo y Extraños en un tren, de Alfred Hitchcock, en la novela contemporánea Queda la noche, de Soledad Puértolas. Mediante una serie de guiños al lector, la autora pone a su alcance un código reconocible que le permite ascender al plano de la creación del texto. José Navarro Bermuz, an Aragonese intellectual who worked for the Italian family of the Ludovisi, was known for his active participation in the literary academies and poetic competitions of his time, and for his collection of Poesías varias. The research includes a literature review on the different systems and the fundamental differences in how care is delivered. An investigation of the major differences in the cultural and political approaches to health care and how the systems provide for their patients is part of the study. Another focus is the treatment of Spanish-speaking patients in hospitals in Illinois and also the treatment of patients who speak Castilian (traditional Spanish) in hospitals in Catalan-speaking Barcelona. This article analyzes the representation of masculinity in Juan José Domenchina’s poetry of exile. The article argues that, during his last 20 years of life in exile (1939–1959), Domenchina shows in his poetry a contradictory masculinity. On the one hand, he reaffirms normative masculinity by rejecting pompous demonstrations of suffering, describing himself as stoic, tough, strong-willed and independent, and praising nostalgically Castilian men’s hypermasculine behavior. On the other hand, Domenchina’s poetry also testifies to his feelings of emasculation, since he calls himself an “ex-man”, shows his masculine fragmentation with the figures of the doppelganger or shadow, identifies himself with a …

The rich mountain of Potosí, with its famed silver mines, has commanded the attention of Europeans, creoles (Americans of Spanish descent), and indigenous Andeans since the Spanish colonizers of Peru were made aware of its existence in 1545. Soon after its discovery, the rich mountain was represented in a variety of written and visual texts created by writers and artists from the Andes, Spain, and other parts of Europe. Independent of its physical form, in these representations the rich mountain assumed a discursive meaning, functioning as an icon that, depending on the context, represented abstract ideas of wealth, immorality, dominance, …

This dissertation uses the seventeenth-century Spanish plays which employ an array of mythological stories of Theseus to analyze the Early Modern ideology of the Prince. The consideration of the different rulers in these plays highlights different aspects of these sovereigns such as their honor, prudence, valor, and self-control. Many of these princes fall well short of the ideal explained in the comedia and in the writings of the arbitristas. By employing the hylomorphic theory in which everything can exist in either its matter or its form, it is shown that in order to have the form of a prince, …

Some of the most important writers of the twentieth century, including Borges, Cortázar, Rulfo, and García Márquez, have explored ambiguous sites of a disquieting nature. Their characters face merging perspectives, deferral, darkness, or emptiness. Such a space is neither a site of projection (as utopia or dystopia) nor a neutral setting (as the topos). For the characters, it is real and active, at once elusive and transforming. Despite the challenges of visualizing such slippery spaces, filmic experimentations in Spanish American cinema since the 1960s have sought to adapt these texts to the screen. This study researches the differences in pedagogical needs between learners of Spanish as a Foreign Language (FL learners) and learners of Spanish as a Heritage Language (HL learners) at the university level. By using the UNL Modern Languages and Literatures Department as an illustrative case and based on an analysis of the Heritage Language student profile in the context of the United States, this study seeks to explore arguments in favor of providing training for university-level instructors of Spanish that responds to the specific pedagogical needs of Heritage Language Learners.

Cuban writer Alejo Carpentier's 1949 novel El reino de este mundo is considered to be a key work in the development of the magical realist narrative idiom. The narrative includes instances of the fantastic -- including ghosts and animal metamorphoses -- that the novel's Afro-Caribbean characters accept as factual. In keeping with his suggestions that "the entire history of America [is] a chronicle of the marvelous real," Carpentier supposes that these elements elucidate an "authentic" New World mode of perception. However, the novel's narrative structure belies the author's objective. The concurrent presentation of both non-Western/magical and Western/disenchanted cultural paradigms prevents …

In Knowing Subjects, Barbara Simerka uses an emergent field of literary study-cognitive cultural studies-to delineate new ways of looking at early modern Spanish literature and to analyze cognition and social identity in Spain at the time. Simerka analyzes works by Cervantes and Gracían, as well as picaresque novels and comedias. Employing an interdisciplinary approach, she brings together several strands of cognitive theory and details the synergies among neurological, anthropological, and psychological discoveries that provide new insights into human cognition. This essay is a supplement for Imatataj tata intiqa rikun? or What Does Papa Sun See? in English. The essay explains the methodology used to collect data and write this children’s book. The investigation focuses on lexical borrows from Spanish to Cochabambino Quechua. Using a drawing of a farm, these borrowed words are found in an area, agriculture, which existed before the Spanish arrived. Many borrowings replace historic words of Quechua. En este ensayo, propongo estudiar críticas del racionalismo, entendido como uno de los grandes mitos metafísicos, en dos obras teatrales de los años 30 del siglo pasado: El hombre deshabitado (1930, estrenado en el 1931) del español Rafael Alberti y La muerte (1930-34, sin estrenar) del peruano César Vallejo.
