Surrogate Histories: (De)Mythifying The Franco-Female In Transitionary Spain, Christina Beaubien Dec 2020

Surrogate Histories: (De)Mythifying The Franco-Female In Transitionary Spain, Christina Beaubien

Doctoral Dissertations

Within the context of Franco Spain, academic scholarship has proven that the regime manipulated collective history via both active remembering and active forgetting in order to construct legitimacy and a national identity. Moreover, much of the regime’s mythology was based on predetermined concepts of gender difference that was exacerbated by the influence of the Catholic church. In this way, what it meant to be female during the Franco dictatorship was a large part of what came to be the nationalized-gender-mythology of the regime, or rather – myths that constructed the Franco-female. On the one hand, the regime constructed mythology …

Cultural Resistance And Textual Emotionality In The Sahrawi Poetic Anthology Versahara, Alberto López Martín Dec 2020

Cultural Resistance And Textual Emotionality In The Sahrawi Poetic Anthology Versahara, Alberto López Martín

Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature

A group of Hispanophone Sahrawi poets founded their own Generación de la Amistad ‘Friendship Generation’ in Madrid in 2005. Ever since, Sahrawi poetry in Spanish has found in the anthology an ideal format to present itself to the Spanish reader, counting more than a dozen publications of poetry collections. Such profusion has nothing to do with the struggle for the cultural hegemony characteristic of other currents within the Spanish poetic field. By contrast, these collections keep to the anthologists’ double logic of cultural preservation and literary activism, which emphasize the communitarian character of their poetry. In this paper, I examine …

Exhuming Labor: Alienation And Rural Affiliation In Spanish Migrant Poetry, Carlos Varón González Dec 2020

Exhuming Labor: Alienation And Rural Affiliation In Spanish Migrant Poetry, Carlos Varón González

Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature

One of the consequences of the 2008 financial crisis was that many young college graduates from the Spanish state left the country, faced with unemployment rates over 40% at home. Whereas Spanish economic growth before the crisis had pushed the narrative that a young generation was predisposed to transnational circulation, the experience of migration challenged the identification of large transnational cities as sites of emancipatory modernization. Fruela Instead, Fruela Fernández’s Una paz europea (A European Peace) and Lara Dopazo Ruibal’s ovella (sheep) point to them as the background to vulnerable, animalized, racialized, alienated bodies. The transnational city is not the …

Dissident Poetry In Post-Crisis Spain: A Challenge To Fluidity, Olga Bezhanova Dec 2020

Dissident Poetry In Post-Crisis Spain: A Challenge To Fluidity, Olga Bezhanova

Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature

The global economic crisis of 2008-9 had an especially severe impact on Spain and resulted in the publication of many works of literature that address the effects and the causes of the crisis. Daniel Macías Díaz and Antonio Rómar, two contemporary Spanish poets, belong to different artistic generations, yet their response to the devastation caused by the economic collapse centers on a rejection of the neoliberal worldview that inspired the creation of the current economic system. The poets question the rhetoric of fluidity and mobility that accompanies the implantation of the neoliberal world order and call for the creation of …

La Peste Y El Distanciamiento En "El Ganso De Oro" De Lope De Vega, Christopher C. Oechler Dec 2020

La Peste Y El Distanciamiento En "El Ganso De Oro" De Lope De Vega, Christopher C. Oechler

Spanish Faculty Publications

Despite presenting a widespread threat during the Golden Age, the plague was rarely dramatized in comedias. Lope de Vega’s El ganso de oro serves as a notable exception to this general trend. With its blending of genres, from the pastoral to the palatial with a strong dose of magic, the play provides insight into life during such a time of pestilence. The current COVID-19 health crisis suggests a new reading of the work, which has previously suffered from a lack of critical attention. This article reviews the key role of the plague in El ganso de oro to highlight its …

La Ficción Revelada. La Poética De La Autoficción En La Literatura Mexicana Contemporánea, Alba Devo Colis Nov 2020

La Ficción Revelada. La Poética De La Autoficción En La Literatura Mexicana Contemporánea, Alba Devo Colis

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Border-crossings —both geographical and metaphorical— are a fertile territory for critical and fictional discourses that explore the forging of gendered personal, social, and cultural identities. The notion of the border becomes a political, material, discursive or symbolic limit, a space of conflict, resistance and negotiation, where power relations are articulated. In this dissertation I analyze the following border-crossing narratives and films: The House on Mango Street, by Sandra Cisneros; Jo també soc catalana and El último patriarca, by Najat El Hatchmi; Retorno a Hansala, by Chus Gutiérrez, and Sin dejar huella, by María Novaro. My study …

The Forest, The Trees, The Bark, The Pith: An Intensive Look At The Circulation Rates Of Primary Texts In Ten Major Literature Areas At The University Of Oregon Libraries, Jeff D. Staiger

Charleston Library Conference

This poster looks at the circulation rate for literary primary texts, which constitute a unique area of collecting in academic libraries: while they do not in most cases meet immediate research needs, it is assumed that libraries ought to acquire them, for reasons including future research needs, preservation of the cultural record, and the ability of members of the intellectual community to stay current, those these remain primarily tacit. The circulation trends of contemporary literary works in ten areas of literature (English, American, German, French, Italian, Spanish, Latin American, Chinese, Japanese, and Russian) over the past twenty years at the …

The Validity Of Online Learning And Teaching Of A Spanish Using An Online Delivery Mode, Rosalind Arthur Oct 2020

The Validity Of Online Learning And Teaching Of A Spanish Using An Online Delivery Mode, Rosalind Arthur

South East Coastal Conference on Languages & Literatures (SECCLL)

Incorporating Online learning as an optional delivery mode of instruction in tertiary institutions with traditional campuses has been the trend in recent years. The question is whether it should be offered universally or with some discrimination. The presenter teaches Spanish at an HBCU which has been offering some general education courses online during the summer.

Needless to say, while online programs are lucrative, it behooves the instructors and institutions to ascertain the viability of the product in terms of the learning needs of the target population. Must enrollment into these courses be open to all or be vetted in order …

El Abrazo De La Serpiente O Un Mise-En-Scène Sin Fronteras, Sandra Ortiz-València Oct 2020

El Abrazo De La Serpiente O Un Mise-En-Scène Sin Fronteras, Sandra Ortiz-València

South East Coastal Conference on Languages & Literatures (SECCLL)

Tomando …

South East Coastal Conference on Languages & Literatures (SECCLL)

An Analysis Of And From The Gaze In Largo Noviembre De Madrid And In Other Short Stories By Juan Eduardo Zuniga/ Análisis De Y Desde La Mirada En Largo Noviembre De Madrid Y En Otros Cuentos De Juan Eduardo Zúñiga, Elena Vega-Sampayo, Jose M. Davila-Montes

Literatures and Cultural Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations

Traditions And Transformations In The Work Of Adál: Surrealism, El Sainete, And Spanglish, Margarita J. Aguilar

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The Nuyorican movement was a cultural and intellectual movement beginning in the late 1960s through the 1970s that coincided with the era of civil rights struggle in the United States. The artists, writers, poets, and others in the movement were of Puerto Rican descent and resided in New York neighborhoods such as El barrio or Spanish Harlem, Loisaida or the Lower East Side and the South Bronx. The term “Nuyorican” was embraced as a badge of honor and pride by New York’s Puerto Rican community. It was during this time that cultural-specific institutions such El Museo del Barrio, Taller Boricua, …

Apocalipsis Cultural E Imaginación Política: El Caso De Madrid En El Periodo Entre Crisis (2008–2020), Natalia Castro Picón Sep 2020

Apocalipsis Cultural E Imaginación Política: El Caso De Madrid En El Periodo Entre Crisis (2008–2020), Natalia Castro Picón

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This dissertation studies the current Spanish economic, political, and social crisis and its representations through apocalyptic imaginaries. I seek to establish a fundamental political and cultural distinction between two models of these imaginaries traceable in representations of Madrid. On one hand, it looks at cultural discourses that display catastrophist projections of the present and the future, insisting on alarmistic and deterministic messages. On the other hand, it looks at other discourses that subvert this representation of the capitalist crisis as the end of the world, shifting the symbolic value of the apocalyptic imaginaries towards figurations of the end of capitalism. …

Don Quixote And Catholicism, Michael Mcgrath Aug 2020

Don Quixote And Catholicism, Michael Mcgrath

Purdue Studies in Romance Literatures

Four hundred years since its publication, Miguel de Cervantes’s Don Quixote continues to inspire and to challenge its readers. The universal and timeless appeal of the novel, however, has distanced its hero from its author and its author from his own life and the time in which he lived. The discussion of the novel’s Catholic identity, therefore, is based on a reading that returns Cervantes’s hero to Cervantes’s text and Cervantes to the events that most shaped his life. The authors and texts McGrath cites, as well as his arguments and interpretations, are mediated by his religious sensibility. Consequently, he …

El Peligro De Contar Historias: Un Análisis De Tu Rostro Mañana, De Javier Marías, Madison Morgan

Senior Honors Projects, 2020-current

Literatura Viva: Formas De Conocer La Literatura Y Agricultura Desde Chiapas, Jesse Nichols Jul 2020

Literatura Viva: Formas De Conocer La Literatura Y Agricultura Desde Chiapas, Jesse Nichols

Dissertations and Theses

Literatura Viva reflects the links between agriculture and literature in Chiapas, Mexico, demonstrating how the ways of knowing the environment which are culturally expressed through literature and the practices of sustainable agriculture are deeply linked. It argues that the experience of the agricultural working class is central not just to a physical movement towards tangible agricultural change but to a society's ability to understand its socio-cultural and natural environment. The thesis first explores indigenous literature, then agricultural practices and finally educational movements which seek to express pluriversal understandings and ways of interacting with the planet. It argues that these understandings …

Cinema "Turns": Catalan Creative Documentary, Celia Sainz Delgado Jul 2020

Cinema "Turns": Catalan Creative Documentary, Celia Sainz Delgado

Masters Theses

This thesis focuses on four women-directed films as a way to illustrate some characteristics shared by the new Catalan creative documentary: El cielo gira ( The Sky Turns, dir. Mercedes Álvarez, 2004), Nedar (Swim, dir. Carla Subirana, 2008), La plaga (The Plague, dir. Neus Ballús, 2013), and Penèlope (Penelope, dir. Eva Vila, 2018). My aim is to highlight their alternative cinematographic strategies, which stray from the hegemonic discourses of documentary filmmaking. In so doing, I analyze these films from three different angles: the relationship between the filmmaker and the material world; the alternative modalities …

Borderless Flows In Federspiel’S Die Ballade Von Der Typhoid Mary, Charlotte Melin Jul 2020

Borderless Flows In Federspiel’S Die Ballade Von Der Typhoid Mary, Charlotte Melin

Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature

Jürg Federspiel’s novel Die Ballade von der Typhoid Mary (1982) offers a fictionalized account of the notorious heroine’s life that ultimately sympathizes with her plight as an immigrant who faced exclusionary cultural barriers. Drawing on Rob Nixon’s concept of “slow violence” and recent approaches developed by material ecocriticism theory, my essay reinterprets this work from an environmental humanities perspective. The interpretation focuses on the interconnection of discourses related to disease, food, and pollution flows. Exploration of these themes leads to the conclusion that Federspiel’s work was prescient in its parallel engagement with both immigration issues and the emerging environmental concerns …
