Finding Inspiration In Darkness: The Exploration Of Obscurity In Romanticism Through The Works Of Lord Byron And Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer, Sarah E. Seal

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Through the works of Lord Byron and Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer, I explored the function of the themes of darkness and obscurity in Romanticism. There was a clear connection between the inclusion of these themes and the rejection of the Enlightenment period, which is what I focused on in this thesis. I discovered that the Romantics found inspiration and beauty in the darker, stranger aspects of the natural world, while rejecting the logical and rational beliefs of the Enlightenment.

This study closely examines the eight interludes and eight full-length plays that Cervantes published in a collection on the thirteenth of September, 1615. Although these theatrical works were published together, the collection has seldom been examined in its entirety as a coherent unit. The purpose of this study, therefore, will be to re-cast a critical focus upon these theatrical works as a whole, in order to provide insight into Cervantes as both a playwright and as an inquisitive and unconventional thinker of his day. When Cervantes publishes his collection of Novelas Ejemplares in 1613, he introduces a type of composition that lacked academic prestige and was not in any way regulated. Although Italian and Spanish writers had already dabbled with brief narrative fictions, it is the author of El Quijote who pushes the new genre in which he skillfully articulates the literary traditions. The success of his collection is immediate; numerous editions of his novellas in various Spanish cities are testimony of the bases which the author was setting, and he rapidly begins to be imitated. The aim of this article is to trace what Rosi Braidotti calls an ‘accurate cartography’ as regards the limited space that science-fiction occupies in the Spanish university. SF has not yet overcome in Spain what Brian Baker has called its ‘crisis of legitimation’. Teaching this genre and doing research on it is, hence, still conditioned within our national borders by boundaries broken in the Anglo-American university many decades ago. Here I examine these boundaries, paying special attention to the institutional limitations preventing scholars from introducing innovations in teaching and research. This study is organized into four chapters that explore the topic from the perspective of three different disciplines: history, historiography and literature. The purpose of this thesis is to serve as a first approach to magical thinking and superstition in the literary discourse of Early Modern Spain, by examining these topics in Miguel de Cervantes’ first Quijote (1605) and María de Zayas’ Novelas Amorosas y Ejemplares (1637). The methodology followed in this thesis fundamentally includes the points of view of four fields of study. These are: anthropology, history, literature and historical linguistics. The present study focuses on Escritos para desocupados (Writings for the Unoccupied), a 2013 work by Mexican author Vivian Abenshushan, as a multifaceted book that poses challenges for literary studies, book studies, and the reader in general. From a textual perspective, Escritos para desocupados is a shape-shifter. That is, depending on how the reader accesses its content, it can be a blog-book, a web-book, a printed book or a digital PDF-book. “José Tamayo in Spanish America, 1949-1951” relies on previously overlooked archival material from Spain and Spanish America to reconstruct the performance schedule and study the financial management and critical reception of the Lope de Vega Company in Cuba, Puerto Rico and Colombia. In doing so, it sheds new light on Tamayo’s administration of the artistic agenda and fiscal needs of his company’s international tour, helping us to understand how Tamayo built and cultivated his growing fame, at home and abroad, in the early part of his career. For early modern Discalced Carmelite nun-poets, solitude remains tied to the paradoxical equation of life to death and death to life so famously parsed by St. Teresa. This essay examines poems by María de San Alberto (1568-1640), Ana de la Trinidad (1577-1613), and Gregoria Francisca de Santa Teresa (1653-1736) exploring the possibilities of creating and maintaining solitude while embarked on a quest for mystical union. Outstanding practitioners of the Teresian poetic tradition, the Founding Mother’s religious and literary example allowed them the freedom to communicate with their religious sisters and subsequent readers, and thereby establish religious community through writing.

Jorge Luis Borges famously quipped, “Not granting me the Nobel prize has become a Scandinavian tradition; since I was born, they have not been granting it to me.” While made tongue-in-cheek, this quote serves as a nice introduction to Borges's sly (often petty) wit, and also to the genuine lack of recognition he received during his productive years. This project analyzes the literary works and the iconic role of Filipino nationalist José Rizal before, during, and after the Spanish American War of 1898. Rizal’s social activism and writing inspired a revolution against the Friarocracy in the Philippines. He also influenced Filipino American writers who reference Rizal’s construction of the Filipino woman in Christianity and Filipinos fighting against colonial oppression. Additionally, Filipino American writers illustrate how being Filipino in the US today is a transcultural experience rather than a simple binary of traditional Philippines and modern America. The theme of duality present throughout the work finds true expression in Cervantes’ well-educated protagonist, Alonso Quijano. In him, the reader glimpses the struggle between antiquity versus early modernity, ideality versus reality, instability versus sanity, and unhealthiness versus healthiness. I analyze female coming-of-age's subjectivity foundations in Habíamos ganado la guerra (2008) by Esther Tusquets. She discusses socializing during girlhood looking into adulthood under the civil uneasiness of post-Civil War Spain. Her voice remodels her conflicting identity and her cultural imbalance through a “female counter-narrative.”

Her memories becomes a problem solving mechanism for her anxiety and self-doubts derivative from conflicts between her maturity process and the established manual for female behavior of General Franco’s Spain. She reclaims her true subjectivity and moral agency with the written word. Therefore, fictional memoir equates to a valuable remodeling of the female subject.

The Age of Discovery travel narratives from the fifteenth and sixteenth century, written by European explorers to the Americas, can be understood not only as narratives, but also as literary maps of the New World. Specifically, Hernán Cortés’s Second Letter in Cartas de Relación exemplifies the ways in which literary cartography helped write the Americas into existence in Europe. Cortés’s map does not reproduce the land he encounters, it creates the space known as America. His letters become a map in three ways. Este artículo analiza las cartas inéditas que desde 1938 hasta 1954 Zenobia Camprubí le envió desde Estados Unidos, Cuba y Puerto Rico a la intelectual Pilar de Zubiaurre en México. El principal argumento es que, a diferencia de lo apuntado por numerosos críticos, Camprubí experimentó un exilio doloroso y nostálgico y utilizó su correspondencia epistolar para contrarrestarlo. Las cartas realizaron tres funciones principales para Camprubí: informativa, auxiliadora y terapéutica. This paper examines a frequently overlooked class of expressions in Spanish that license the subjunctive mood in a complement clause. This class contains expressions such as poco/a/s “few”, menos de “less than” and solo “only”. The goal of the paper is to offer an account of the use of mood with these expressions that incorporates the data under discussion into previous pragmatic accounts of mood based on notions of assertion and informative value. The paper first offers a semantic characterization of this class of expressions that is based on their monotonic properties (Ladusaw 1980, Ladusaw 1983). Next, it explores the …
