Juan De Torquemada And Antonio Alcedo: Two Contributions To Hispanic Historiography, Andre Preibish

The Courier

Andre Preibish describes two rare books by Juan De Torquemada and Antonio Alcedo, which shed light on colonial Mexico and America, respectively. Although much of Torquemada's writing is plagiarized, he cites previously unknown authors and works. Antonio Alcedo, meanwhile, provides an encyclopedic description of Spanish colonies and of the western hemisphere during the eighteenth century.

Although certain critics have mentioned Blasco Ibáñez’s women characters in their writings, they often relegate these persons to a subordinate role relevant to the development of the plot and of the philosophy of the author. Many of the earlier critics have mentioned the importance of the setting in Blasco Ibáñez’s novels, as did James O. In the history of literature there are certain writers who owe their importance not only to their creative stature, but to the fact that they give life or incorporate ideas and ideals of their times that had hardly registered in the intellectual sensibility of the elite. Such men represent the new stages in the awareness of men’s condition. One of them was the playwright José Echegaray y Eizaguirre (1832-1916).
