The Martyred Maternal Body In Pedro De Fuentes' Doña Francisca La Cautiva, Stacey L. Parker Aronson

In the nineteenth-century romance “Doña Francisca la cautiva [the captive]” written by Pedro de Fuentes (1831), the Virgin Mary convinces a woman to redeem a man through her Christian influence. The female body becomes the instrument to bring about this spiritual redemption. During a trip from Naples to Rome, Doña Francisca, accompanied by her three children, is kidnapped by Turkish pirates and enslaved by the Renegade, a former Christian slave converted to Islam. This romance was written during the Tanzimat period between 1830 and 1880 when Ottoman writers and activists advocated the elimination of slavery within the Ottoman Empire. This …

For many of us, connecting math and literature seems very bizarre since we think that it is very hard to use numbers to express our literary thoughts. Yet, we forget that first mathematicians were philosophers (or is it the other way around?) who wanted to explain nature and events around them in simple mathematical findings. I picked this novel as a thesis not only because it gives an interesting picture of the life of the Buendia family but also because of its political aspects relating to Latin America and especially Colombia. It describes the Civil Wars in Colombia from 1885 to 1902 in which the liberal and conservative parties played an important role. The novel gives a fascinating account of the massacre of the banana strikers as a result o f the strike against the American United Fruit Company and the members of the Buendia family involved in it.

Abstract:

The 1890s in New Mexico were a time of considerable political, cultural, and social upheaval as the question of statehood – which would remain unresolved until 1912 – roiled the population. In 1892 Eusebio Chacón’s two novellas, El Hijo de la Tempestad and Tras la Tormenta la Calma, appeared in “El Boletín Popular,” one of Northern New Mexico’s largest Spanish-language newspapers. “El Boletín Popular’s” positive stance towards statehood offers a political lens through which we might read Chacón’s fiction as a proactive instantiation of nuevomexicano cultural tradition. In 1988, twenty years ago, Arturo Perez-Reverte wrote a marvelously complex novel entitled El maestro de esgrima (The Fencing Master). The project of that novel was to show how certain traditional Spanish values and attitudes were threatened by contemporary realities. The protagonist, the talented and socially withdrawn Don Jaime de Astarloa, is a gentleman of the ideal "caballero-hidalgo" type, a fencing master, who is nearly killed defending his values, single-handedly, against a major transnational conspiracy being played out during the political turmoil of the late 19th century. A good question for speculation is, "By the age of 18 how many serial killers and assassins have our young people seen? Very few, of course, unless you count the scores of fictional characters who are depicted every year on television and in films. They are, for some reason, a point of particular curiosity, and they are appearing in the literature of Spain. Perhaps the most well-known 20th century serial killer is Camilo Jose Cela's Pascual Duarte. Just how could these characters be approached in our classes?

Es tarea compleja ofrecer algo innovador sobre la obra de la escritora gallega Rosalía de Castro, ya que sus poemas, cuentos, novelas y demáa escritos han sido extensivamente estudiados por la crítica desde distintas aproximaciones teóricas. No obstante, no existe tanto énfasis en referencia a los aspectos fantásticos presentes en la obra de la autora. Si bien es fácil encontrar algunos acercamientos en relación a su novela El caballero de las botas azules (1867), casi no hay mención a los elementos fantásticos existentes en su poesía. [excerpt]

This thesis focuses on the life and literary legacy of one of the Hispanic world’s women, María Rosa de Gálvez (1768-1806) who wrote her poetic works and lyrical compositions in the Neoclassic Period. Gálvez is the author of seven original tragic dramas, five original comedies, a collection of poems and two translations.

Since one of the many issues that concerned the Spanish Enlightenment was the abilities and rights of women, this is also included in the analysis. Gálvez’s literary works proposed a new type of woman, like the characters in her plays: strong women who protest the plight of Spanish …

They sometimes do not transcend their own linguistic, geographical, and cultural borders, but rather, bestow upon a country, a territory, or in this case, an island, a sense of identity. Without these works, the cultural profile of a people would be blurred and even non-existent. NADA más empezar a leer la primera parte de Mano de obra, “El despertar de los trabajadores”, el lector puede vislumbrar una perspectiva un tanto religiosa en boca del personaje principal. Esta primera parte compuesta de ocho capítulos, distribuidos anacrónicamente y abarcando un período que se extiende desde 1904 hasta 1926, recoge exclusivamente todo el peso místico de la obra.
