(Un)Faithful Renditions: Gender Dynamics In An Adaptation Of Don Gil De Las Calzas Verdes, Raul Galoppe

Recent stage versions of Tirso de Molina’s Don Gil de las calzas verdes have departed from traditional cape-and-sword approaches and experimented with psychological traits and gender ambiguities. Interestingly, these departures from canonical staging seem to occur more frequently among productions in English, as if translations served the liberating purpose of releasing tensions between texts and their original contexts, hence facilitating the process of adaptation. This article examines the process of adaptation for an upcoming New York production of Don Gil, written by Dave Dalton and subject of an ASTR Targeted Research Areas Grant. I picked this novel as a thesis not only because it gives an interesting picture of the life of the Buendia family but also because of its political aspects relating to Latin America and especially Colombia. It describes the Civil Wars in Colombia from 1885 to 1902 in which the liberal and conservative parties played an important role. The novel gives a fascinating account of the massacre of the banana strikers as a result o f the strike against the American United Fruit Company and the members of the Buendia family involved in it.

Works of microcultural relevance are characterized by being read and valued primarily within the confines of a given culture. This thesis focuses on the life and literary legacy of one of the Hispanic world’s women, María Rosa de Gálvez (1768-1806) who wrote her poetic works and lyrical compositions in the Neoclassic Period. Gálvez is the author of seven original tragic dramas, five original comedies, a collection of poems and two translations.
Since one of the many issues that concerned the Spanish Enlightenment was the abilities and rights of women, this is also included in the analysis. Gálvez’s literary works proposed a new type of woman, like the characters in her plays: strong women who protest the plight of Spanish …
