Consuming Beauty In The Weimar Republic: A Discussion Of Youth, Cosmetics, And Power In Vicki Baum's Play Pariser Platz 13 (1930), Victoria Vygodskaia - Rust

Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature

Published in 1930, Vicki Baum’s play Pariser Platz 13: Eine Komödie aus dem Schönheitssalon engaged the readership with an unorthodox and thoroughly modern heroine: the successful owner of international beauty salons Helen Bross. Helen personified the wishes and dreams of Baum’s readers: Helen’s autonomy, both personal and financial, allowed her to be an active consumer of modernity and its pleasures: travel, interaction with celebrities, and luxurious lodging.

My paper studies a (fictional) beauty salon on Pariser Platz in Berlin as an enclave of female power and explores Vicki Baum’s portrayal of beauty, youth, and fashion as commodities. I place my …

World Languages and Cultures Student Papers and Posters

In biblical literature, the devil serves as an archetype of evil. He appears as a deceptive serpent, a roaring lion and a vanquished dragon. Each one of the great charlatan’s faces serves to add levels of meaning to this complex character. Like biblical authors, Hispanic authors have incorporated this archetype in their own literary works in distinct ways, taking advantage of its complexity and levels of meaning. During the Middle Ages in Spain, Gonzalo de Berceo incorporated the devil as a figure of deception and enmity in Los milagros de Nuestra Señora. Two centuries later, in the Spanish baroque …

La Mujer Nueva Y El Erotismo En La Poesía De Concha Méndez, Kathryn Anne Everly Nov 2019

La Mujer Nueva Y El Erotismo En La Poesía De Concha Méndez, Kathryn Anne Everly

Languages, Literatures, and Linguistics - All Scholarship

Spanish poet Concha Méndez captures the essence of the New Woman International in her early poetry from 1920s Spain. Images of travel, adventure and the explicit description of female desire characterize her early poetry despite the oppressive social norms for women in an overtly Catholic Spain.

Actaeon, Artichokes, And Audrey Ii: Fear And Food In Popular Narratives, Margaret E. Foster

Scholarly Undergraduate Research Journal at Clark (SURJ)

Food has a dual physical and sociocultural relationship to human life. This duality positions images of food as uniquely powerful when subverted in literary or aesthetic representations for the purpose of evoking what Joyce Carol Oates (1998) calls “aesthetic fear.” Drawing on symbolism primarily from Classical mythology, Western European fairy tales, American horror movies, and resistance poetry from the Spanish Civil War, this paper explores four symbolic subversions of the food chain (when hunters are hunted; bloodthirsty plants; cannibalism; and hunger). With particular attention to gender roles and natural life cycles, these narratives illuminate the ways in which food symbolism …

El Caso De Mateo Alemán: La Interaccion Entre El Derecho Y La Literatura En El Informe De La Mina De Mercurio De Almaden Y El Guzman De Alfarache, Cristina Morales Segura

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

In 1593, the Judge Mateo Alemán was in charge of inspecting the quicksilver mines of Almadén in Spain to report on the situation of its workers, prisoners of the Crown, and galley men forced to work in the mercury exploitation. After one month of work, the assignment was cancelled, Alemán was forced to retire from his research, and his work was lost in the archives of the Habsburgs. A few years later, in 1598, Alemán published his famous best seller, El Guzmán de Alfarache.

Alemán’s legal Report, finally found and published in 1966 by Germán Bleiberg, is a narrative text …

La Recepción Literaria Y Artística De Don Quijote En Toronto A Través De The Globe (1844-1936), Ivan B. Vazquez Clavellina

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Propuestas Para (Re)Construir Una Nación : El Teatro De Emilia Pardo Bazán, Margot Versteeg

Purdue University Press Book Previews

Propuestas para (re)construir una nación explores how Emilia Pardo Bazán (1851–1921) imagines and engenders the Spanish nation in her theatrical production staged and/or published between 1898 and 1909. In the aftermath of Spain’s colonial losses, when Spain’s male authors, in a growing mood of collective introspection, directed their attention to the homeland, Pardo Bazán generated a series of theatrical proposals to revitalize the nation. In her plays, she manifests her ideas about Spain’s fin de siècle crisis, reflects on Spain’s place in the international arena (emphasizing the nation’s civilizing mission), critiques the intoxicating power of the so-called golden legend (Spain’s …

Teatro, Ciencia Ficción Y Distopía En La España Tardofranquista: Sodomáquina (1970), De Carlo Frabetti, Miguel Carrera Garrido

Alambique.

El Jardí Dels Set Crepuscles, La Intelectualización De La Ficción Especulativa En La Literatura Catalana De Los Años Ochenta, Miguel A. Albújar Escuredo

Alambique.

Abstract: This essay illustrates how Miquel de Palol, with the publication of the Jardí dels set crepuscles (1989), culminates the evolution of the …

The Mother Narrative Transformed: Criminalizing The Immigrant Mother In Jordi Sierra I Fabra’S “Barrios Altos”, Diana Aramburu

Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature

With the ongoing financial crisis and the influx of refugees and other migrant communities in Spain, the "immigrant problem," combined with a narrative that reflects upon the economic crisis, has become a focal point for numerous genres, including that of crime fiction. While the immigrant narrative has been mostly presented from the vantage point of the autochthonous community, recent contributions to migrant literature in Spain have refocalized this perspective, and privilege the immigrant’s plight to evoke the reader’s empathy. This article examines how Jordi Sierra i Fabra’s 2013 “Barrios altos” (“A High-End Neighborhood,” 2011) problematizes the representation of the immigrant …

Undocumented Crime In Juan Mayorga’S Animales Nocturnos, Jeffrey K. Coleman Jun 2019

Undocumented Crime In Juan Mayorga’S Animales Nocturnos, Jeffrey K. Coleman

Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature

The link between criminality and immigration is often personified in the undocumented immigrant. As nations have constricted the flow of immigrants, laws have inscribed a criminal culpability attached to the lack of documentation. The lack of papers becomes such a part of their persona that in Spanish the colloquial term for an undocumented immigrant is a sin papeles ‘illegal immigrant.’ Juan Mayorga’s chilling 2003 play Animales nocturnos (Nocturnal) explores the lengths to which laws can be used to criminalize and psychologically abuse undocumented immigrants. This paper will explore how immigration law manifests itself in the play and how …

Sueños De Tánger: Extraterritorial Basque Crime Fiction On Immigration To Spain, Shanna Lino

Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature

As the world increasingly turns its attention to the European refugee crisis and to the 1.8 million who have arrived on that continent since 2014 as a consequence of being forced to flee their native countries’ war-torn cities and villages, questions continue to arise regarding the ethical and political responsibilities of Western nations to facilitate this exodus and to provide refugee and immigration services en route and at destination. Spain remains the intended port of arrival for thousands of Malians, Mauritanians, Moroccans, and Western Saharans who sometimes manage to escape war and extreme poverty only to find themselves stalled on …

When The Bubble Bursts: A Spatial Interrogation Of Spanish Crisis In José Ángel Mañas’ Sospecha, Nick Phillips Jun 2019

When The Bubble Bursts: A Spatial Interrogation Of Spanish Crisis In José Ángel Mañas’ Sospecha, Nick Phillips

Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature

José Ángel Mañas’s detective novel Sospecha investigates the consequences of the 2008 economic crisis by focusing on the unsustainable development of the Madrid urban area. I argue that the novel’s depiction of the Spanish capital serves as a case study for coming to terms with the identity and effects of crisis. By employing elements of the police procedural, Sospecha creates multiple trajectories through these suburban communities, allowing the novel to trace the impacts of a globalized economic model that presents these spaces as products of consumption. In turn, it is the spatial production of the city’s urban periphery that becomes …

Seeing (As) The Eroticized And Exoticized Other In Spanish Im/Migration Cinema: A Critical Look At The (De)Criminalization Of Migrants And Impunity Of Hegemonic Perpetrators, Maureen Tobin Stanley Jun 2019

Seeing (As) The Eroticized And Exoticized Other In Spanish Im/Migration Cinema: A Critical Look At The (De)Criminalization Of Migrants And Impunity Of Hegemonic Perpetrators, Maureen Tobin Stanley

Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature

This article examines cinematic perspective in six Spanish im/migration films to show that by resituating the identification from an alignment with that of a hegemonic character (who accepts the systematic bias that confers impunity to perpetrators) to identification with a criminalized migrant subject, these films 1) denounce systemic intersectionality that confers impunity to perpetrators and criminalizes the racialized and/or feminized other and 2) aim at fostering empathy in the hegemonically identified viewer. Parameters for the selection of the six films are: immigration to Spain, African (whether geographic or ethnic) origins, eroticization of the migrant, objectification/(ab)use/commodification/victimization of the Other, criminalization of …
