They Said, She Said: Making The Case For Rape In Fuenteovejuna, Stacey L. Parker Aronson

Despite the allegations of a number of literary critics to the contrary, textual and cultural evidence exists in Lope’s Fuenteovejuna to suggest that Laurencia was indeed raped. First, a consideration of her physical appearance is in order. Second, an overlooked comment by Jacinta evidences Laurencia’s rape. Third, the quality attributed to Laurencia, namely her virtue, should be understood within its socio-historical context during the early modern period, its understanding superseding an exclusively sexual meaning. Finally, this drama can be considered in light of its adherence to and subversion of what Wendy S. Hesford terms “rape scripts.”

Arroz y tartana, escrita en 1894, ejemplifica las consecuencias graves de abandonar los valores burgueses de trabajo y economía para guardar apariencias con excesos de gasto y consumo. El director José Antonio Escrivá llevó la obra a la pantalla en el año 2003, y Enric Murillo compuso la música original. Los temas, coordinados con las imágenes y el diálogo, constituyen un lenguaje no verbal para comunicarle información al espectador. Funcionando en conjunto dentro del sistema de leitmotifs, los temas establecen una red de asociaciones que informa y expresa la filosofía moral de la narración.

During the Spanish Civil War and its aftermath, the fear of being denounced and subsequently punished contributed to the social silence that became the norm during Franco´s dictatorship. This was then reinforced during democracy through an implicit pact of oblivion. After the death of Franco, as an attempt to avoid reopening wounds, successive democratic governments decided not to agitate the ghost of the civil war, due to its traumatic nature. The consequence of such a pact of oblivion is the lack of information about the past, continually suffered by subsequent generations. Food metaphors, culinary motifs, and gastronomic inquiry play a significant role in the development of Cervantes most renowned novel, The Ingenious Gentleman Don Quixote of La Mancha. Readers may immediately recall the second sentence of the novel that portrays Alonso Quijano by his weekly diet to know that food and identity are inextricably linked. Additionally, food representations enliven the pages with semiotic clues that reveal the characters’ state of being; themes of ethnic, class, and social identities; and cultural norms of breaking bread, sharing meals, and lively post prandial discussions. This dissertation analyzes the prose works of the “Nova Novorum,” a fiction series created and published by José Ortega y Gasset between 1926 and 1929. This collection included six works by four authors, five of which will be discussed in this dissertation. Pedro Salinas’ Víspera del gozo (1926) inaugurated the series. Benjamín Jarnés published two works: El profesor inútil (1926) and Paula y Paulita (1929). Antonio Espina is also responsible for two works: Pájaro pinto (1927) and Luna de copas (1929).

A pesar del interés que suscita, la minificción del exilio republicano español en México ha sido mayormente ignorada por la crítica y, cuando se ha reparado en ella, su acercamiento descontextualizado ha provocado inexactitudes que se reflejan en el canon minificcional propuesto para la Península. Por ello, examino algunas vías de contacto entre el exterior y el interior de España y propongo una primera aproximación a un corpus de autores en exilio, entre los que destacan Max Aub, María Luisa Elío y José de la Colina.

Analyzing cookbooks, gastronomic guides, literature and film, this dissertationoutlines the creation of a Spanish national cuisine. Studying the works of Carmen de Burgos, Emilia Pardo Bazán, Dionisio Pérez, Ana María Herrera, Juan Mari Arzak and Ferrán Adrià among others, the project examines the evolution of this nationalist discourse by identifying common and recurring themes in an effort to extrapolate and describe the historical and cultural evolution of food from 1900 to the present day.

For the Archpriest of Hita, covetousness is the root of all evil. Although from Hieronymus’ translation of the Bible onwards the notions of the sins of covetousness and avarice became interchangeable, this paper highlights both sins in the context of the commercial and urban development reached by the late medieval society at a moment when the sharp desire for worldly possessions acquired an unprecedented visibility. During Spring 2015 I undertook a curricular revision of UNL's fourth-semester Spanish course (SPAN202) with the objective of improving the materials to help the course better achieve its stated goal of moving students "away from knowledge about the language and expertise in using isolated skills into a practical and fluid use of the language in which [they] synthesize [their] isolated skills." Este trabajo ofrece un acercamiento crítico al libro Colección privada (2003) del poeta colombiano Ramón Cote Baraibar. Partiendo de la propuesta del propio Cote, quien pide en la “Entrada” de su libro que se lo acepte como una sala de exhibición donde los poemas son equivalentes a las obras de arte, propongo una aproximación desde dos perspectivas dialógicas: una interna y otra externa. Using the psychoanalytic approach, I examine The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, A imitação da rosa by Clarice Lispector, and Cambio de armas by Luisa Valenzuela, particularly noting a common use of defense mechanisms between the stories. Additionally, I propose an expanded use of the psychoanalytic approach that includes the theories of other psychologists (not just Freud) and use it to inform alternative interpretations of the texts.

While it began as a study of the numerous fainting spells in La fuerza de la sangre by Cervantes, his paper focuses on re-exploring Leocadia as a victim of trauma. By combining narratology and psychology, I explore the ways in which Leocadia is a victim of trauma. Narratology not only helps the exploration of Leocadia’s psychology, but also assists in understanding how the ways Leocadia’s story is told affects her psychologically. This combination of approaches leads to the conclusion that Leocadia’s story is a realistic representation of a victimized woman.

Surrealism—a literary and artistic movement that has often been criticized for being misogynistic—stemmed from the idea of representing the unconscious mind, unburdened by societal norms. Several female surrealist artists and writers did emerge during the movement, including Remedios Varo, a Catalan surrealist painter. Throughout the early stages of her career, Varo was barely recognized by her male surrealist counterparts. Varo’s gender and background influenced her interpretation of femininity. When comparing Varo’s paintings with those of another famous Catalan surrealist, Salvador Dalí, the difference in the representation of women is striking. Rafael Leonidas Trujillo (1891-1961), the ruthless Dominican Republic ruler dominated his island’s politics for over thirty years. In his acclaimed 2000 novel, The Feast of the Goat, Peruvian Nobel laureate Mario Vargas Llosa creates Urania Cabral, a 49-year-old émigrée who at 14 left her nation after becoming Trujillo’s sexual victim. The novel, told from many perspectives, focuses on her return, the dictator’s last day, and the story of the four conspirators waiting to ambush him the night of May 30th 1961. En la novela cervantina Don Quijote de la Mancha, se presentan cuatro episodios en que hay mujeres o que son amenazadas con la violación sexual o que son violadas. Estas mujeres son Dorotea, la mujer que le pide justicia a Sancho cuando él gobierna su ínsula, y unas mozas del pueblo donde vive Teresa Panza que son llevadas por unos soldados.
