Spain’S Camino De Santiago: Dramatic Space For Literary Creation, Polly J. Hodge Jan 2005

Spain’S Camino De Santiago: Dramatic Space For Literary Creation, Polly J. Hodge

World Languages and Cultures Faculty Articles and Research

"This project investigates the image of Spain's Camino de Santiago (The Way of Saint James) from a historical and literary point of view and in light of theories of space. It is postulated that the Camino serves as a dramatic space, a type of theatrical stage that serves as an integral backdrop for the production of many literary pieces throughout time. This stage set, or the image of the Camino, changes with the political and social ambiance of the historical moment. In this study four different types of literary works are considered: medieval legends of the Camino de Santiago; poetic …

Monoglossic Policies For A Heteroglossic Culture: Misinterpreted Multilingualism In Modern Galicia, José Del Valle Jan 2000

Monoglossic Policies For A Heteroglossic Culture: Misinterpreted Multilingualism In Modern Galicia, José Del Valle

Publications and Research

This article critically discusses the representations of language that, since the 1980s, have been informing language policy in Galicia. Data from Galicia´s Sociolinguisic Map are re-analyzed and an argument is made that current language policies are grounded in a misinterpretation of how speakers map language on to identity.

The Validity Of Selected Draw-A-Person Test Classifying Criteria Among Homosexual And Non Homosexual Males, Joel Von Ornsteiner Aug 1999

The Validity Of Selected Draw-A-Person Test Classifying Criteria Among Homosexual And Non Homosexual Males, Joel Von Ornsteiner

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to explore the validity of Machover's (1949) interpretation that attention to both the hips and buttocks drawn by male subjects in their first male Draw-A-Person Test (DAP) or the drawing of a female figure first are significant indicators of male homosexuality. The hypothesis was that the frequency of these homosexual indicators among non-instituted homosexuals would be significantly higher (P = < .05) than the male heterosexual group. One hundred homosexual and 100 heterosexual males were selected from groups of volunteers from two universities, one bookstore and a community center in the New York City area. The subjects were administered a DAP test in booklet format and a questionnaire. The drawings were classified for homosexual indicators blindly and independently by three judges who were trained in the use of the Machover interpretation of the DAP. Chi square analyses were calculated for the frequency of hips and buttocks and for the drawing of a female figure first and no significant differences between the self identified homosexual and heterosexual male groups in the expected direction were found. It was concluded that the lack of any significant difference between the scores of the homosexual and heterosexual males in this study casts considerable doubt on the validity of the male homosexual interpretations explored. Speculations were made concerning the widely discrepant results from past studies and this investigation. The majority of the past research had been conducted within institutional settings and there have been cultural changes over the last fifty years in both psychology and society's tolerance for the male homosexual. Unlike any previous DAP study, one-hundred urban homosexual and one-hundred heterosexual males were randomly selected. This researcher cautions that the DAP test should be interpreted with other available information, and results based on its independent use are viewed with much skepticism. Implications for future research were discussed.

Encircling Linearity In Carlos Saura's Peppermint Frappé, Linda M. Willem Jan 1999

Encircling Linearity In Carlos Saura's Peppermint Frappé, Linda M. Willem

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

Spanish director Carlos Saura is internationally famous for creating films where the past, the present, and the future are fused together and intermixed with reality, fantasy, and dreams. Although this practice is generally recognized by critics as one of Saura's strategies for circumventing the repressive censorship operating during the Franco era, María Delgado points out that Saura's continued reliance on non-linear narratives in his post-Franco work "indicates that his style was determined as much by a desire to interrogate the possibilities of the medium as by censorship" (375). Indeed, in an interview with Antonio Castro, Saura has been quoted as …

Text And Intertext: James Whale's Frankenstein In Víctor Erice's El Espíritu De La Colmena, Linda M. Willem Jan 1998

Text And Intertext: James Whale's Frankenstein In Víctor Erice's El Espíritu De La Colmena, Linda M. Willem

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

Víctor Erice's use of clips from James Whale's Frankenstein as the basis for actions by his young protagonist, Ana, in El espíritu de la colmena has led critics to speculate on the symbolic meaning of the monster within that Spanish film. For Virginia Higginbotham the monster represents Franco's Spain, a country that has lost both its memory and its moral sense (116-20). For Marvin D'Lugo the monster stands for the mysterious, the unknown, the different, and the deviant, all of which Ana identifies with as she defines herself as an oppositional spirit (2862). Carmen Arocena sees Ana's rebellion as an …

Highlighting The Hidden: Visual Representation In Gutiérrez Aragón's Demonios En El Jardín, Linda M. Willem Jan 1997

Highlighting The Hidden: Visual Representation In Gutiérrez Aragón's Demonios En El Jardín, Linda M. Willem

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

According to Spanish film maker Manuel Gutiérrez Aragón, there is an intimate relationship between the family and the state, with the traits of the family mirroring those of the state in which it exists: "la primera célula del Estado es la familia, y si el Estado, por definición, es opresivo, la familia es igualmente opresiva" (García Fernández 331). "Yo utilizo la familia en mis películas porque es muy real, muy testimonial. La familia repite fielmente la estructura social 0 estatal" (Payán and López 27). In Demonios en el jardín (1982) Gutiérrez Aragón uses the metaphor of the family not only …

The Spanish Chapel Of Santa Maria Novella: A Document Of Dominican Dogma, Dale Hoover Dec 1991

The Spanish Chapel Of Santa Maria Novella: A Document Of Dominican Dogma, Dale Hoover

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Previous scholarship has suggested that the frescoes of the Spanish Chapel at Santa Maria Novella in Florence were influenced by the celebration of Corpus Domini and by the philosophy of st. Thomas Aquinas. Although scholars have agreed that such influences exist, few have demonstrated, the supposed relationships among frescoed images and Aquinas' words or Corpus Domini's text. This study presents an analysis of the frescoes in the terms of Aquinas' stated ~hilosophy and the text for the mass of Corpus Domini. The frescoes contain images of Aquinas enthroned and Aquinas teaching. The image of Aquinas enthroned above figures representing theological and …
