Food And Memory In Literature: A Folkloric Approach, Pola Schiavone

Dublin Gastronomy Symposium

This paper analyzes food as a memory device in the novel Doña Flor y sus dos maridos by the Brazilian author Jorge Amado. Set in San Salvador du Bahía in northern Brazil, the novel follows Doña Flor after her husband Vadinho dies. Food and drink – considered here as folkloric forms – play a central role not only in her exploration of memories of her husband but also in the broader bahiana society with its mix of different ethnicities (African, indigenous, European). Drawing on Felix Coluccio’s and Dan Ben-Amos notions of folklore and literature and Arjun Appadurai’s exploration of the …

La Traducción Política: El Silenciamiento Narrativo Y La Traducción Inglés-Español Bajo Francisco Franco, Avery Austin

World Languages and Cultures Student Papers and Posters

However, in doing so, we ignore how translation can be used to take advantage of the reader – how can one know that a change has occurred in a translated work if they have no knowledge of the text’s original language? This paper studies the power dynamics of translation, and how it can be used as a tool to aid censorship. By focusing on translated literary works under the Franco regime, this work …

Distortion And Subversion: Punk Rock Music And The Protests For Free Public Transportation In Brazil [Book Review], Mariel Acosta

Publications and Research

Around the year 2003 some friends and I from “el way,” the self-referential youth slang the alternative music scene and subculture members used in the Dominican Republic, started attending meetings for the youth political group Juventud Rebelde at the borrowed backyard of the left-wing political party Fuerza de la Revolución. The yard had a gazebo-like structure with a cemented floor and a zinc roof under which foldable chairs were arranged in a circle. There we participated in multigenerational study groups to discuss radical communist and anarchist texts in relation to current political issues, we heard talks and report backs …

Speaker Investment And Oral Proficiency In Heritage Speakers Of Spanish: A Quantitative Approach, Megan Marshall Feb 2024

Speaker Investment And Oral Proficiency In Heritage Speakers Of Spanish: A Quantitative Approach, Megan Marshall

11th National Symposium on Spanish as a Heritage Language (Archived)

Title: Speaker investment and oral proficiency in heritage speakers of Spanish: a quantitative approach

Keywords: Investment, Heritage, Identity, Oral Proficiency

The concept of investment has been used to expand the understanding of language learning beyond the acquisition of language competence, grammar, pronunciation, etc. to also consider how the speaker/learner is socially positioned to navigate social contexts and the impacts this has on their opportunities for language learning and use (Norton-Pierce, 1995; Norton & Toohey, 2011). Darvin & Norton, 2015 further develop this work by proposing a trio of components that contribute to speaker investment- (1)speaker identity, (2)linguistic ideologies and (3)social …

Approaches Of Digital Pedagogies For The Appreciation And Preservation Of Local Trans And Multilingual Cultural Heritages, Stephanie Gonzalez, Sylvia Fernández Quintanilla, Glenn Martínez, Deeann Ivie

11th National Symposium on Spanish as a Heritage Language (Archived)

In an effort to provide culturally and linguistically relevant Spanish as a Heritage Language (SHL) programs in the United States, several language programs have turned to creating digital language learning and teaching materials using various data sources, digital tools, methodologies, cultural practices, digital humanities platforms and projects, as well as Open Educational Resources (OER). This facilitates innovative knowledge production that preserves local translingual and multilingual cultural heritages and identities of Spanish HLLs from multiracial backgrounds in the US in analog and online spaces. Current initiatives in multilingual, decolonial, postcolonial Digital Humanities (DH) are pushing back against the aporias in the …

Unha Vez Tiven Un Cravo (Once I Had A Nail), Roslie De Castro, Scott Cooper

Obsculta

Rosalia de Castro was a nineteenth-century Spanish Catholic writer now best-known for her novels, but her poetry is widely admired in the Spanish-speaking world as well. This devotional poem is written in the language of her native region of Galicia, and the translator hopes that this new version will awaken interest in Castro's work in the English-speaking world.
