Obsculta

Rosalia de Castro was a nineteenth-century Spanish Catholic writer now best-known for her novels, but her poetry is widely admired in the Spanish-speaking world as well. This devotional poem is written in the language of her native region of Galicia, and the translator hopes that this new version will awaken interest in Castro's work in the English-speaking world.

Blaming The Victim: Deconstructing María De Zayas's Feminism, Jennifer Zundel Jan 2018

Blaming The Victim: Deconstructing María De Zayas's Feminism, Jennifer Zundel

Undergraduate Theses, Professional Papers, and Capstone Artifacts

María de Zayas y Sotomayor (1591 – 1661?) was the best-selling author of two extant collections of novellas, Novelas Amorosas y Ejemplares (Exemplary Tales of Love) (1637) and Desengaños Amorosos (The Disenchantments of Love) (1647). Both collections, consisting of stories of love, marriage, and gendered violence between aristocratic men and women, are explicitly and unapologetically pro-woman. Zayas condemns systemic misogyny and calls for institutional inclusion and protection of women, earning her place as an early modern feminist. Despite her depictions of violence against women and her denunciation of patriarchal institutions, Zayas does not advocate for a radical restructuring of society. …

China And The Politics Of Cross–Cultural Representation In Interwar European Fiction, Carles Prado-Fonts Sep 2017

China And The Politics Of Cross–Cultural Representation In Interwar European Fiction, Carles Prado-Fonts

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his article "China and the Politics of Cross–Cultural Representation in Interwar European Fiction" Carles Prado-Fonts analyzes Joan Crespi's La ciutat de la por (The City of Fear, 1930) to illustrate the varied representations of China in interwar Europe. In the 1920s and 1930s, a plurality of views on China and the Chinese people became widespread across different parts of Europe, mainly shaped by English, French, and German representations. Contradictory images of China coexisted in literature, thought, and popular culture. Crespi's work exemplifies these contradictions: China appears as both an attainable reality and an unreachable fantasy, two tropes that prevailed …

Navegando Las Barreras Entre El Patriarcado Y El Poder Femenino: Un Análisis De La Representación De La Mujer En El Cine Español Desde 1948 A 2014, Olivia Sloan Marple Jan 2015

Navegando Las Barreras Entre El Patriarcado Y El Poder Femenino: Un Análisis De La Representación De La Mujer En El Cine Español Desde 1948 A 2014, Olivia Sloan Marple

Honors Theses and Capstones

Making Fun Of Franco: Representations And Caricatures Of Spanish Fascism In The Films El Espiritú De La Colmena, Cría Cueros And El Laberinto Del Fauno, Elizabeth Pruchnicki

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

The end of the Spanish Civil War marked the beginning of Francisco Franco’s dictatorship, which lasted more than 35 years. Throughout this time, he systemized terror, executing more than 100,000 republican sympathizers in the first few years of his regime and marginalizing the remainder of the population. Therefore, the Fascist Era lasting from 1940-1975 is one plagued with strained relationships, ambiguous loyalties and distant relatives. The films El espiritú de la colmena by Victor Erice, Cría cuervos by Carlos Saura and El laberinto del fauno by Guillermo del Toro’s illustrate these kinds of challenges, from the point …

La Puerta A Europa: Percepciones De La Inmigración En Andalucía, Kristin Glasheen Jan 2014

La Puerta A Europa: Percepciones De La Inmigración En Andalucía, Kristin Glasheen

Honors Theses

CMC Senior Theses

(In Spanish) The Spanish Civil war isn't over in the hearts and minds of the people of Spain; rather, it is still being fought in the ideological realm of historical memory. Originally explored in literature and film, the theme of historical memory has not only become more visible and more explicit, but has taken the leap from art and literature into the political realm to become one of Spain's most pressing political issues.

El Derecho Para Decir “Sí, Quiero”: El Movimiento Lgbtq En Los Ee.Uu., España, Y La Argentina, Jamila A. Humphrie

Hispanic Studies Honors Projects

This Honors Project reflects my four years of experiences as a student of the Hispanic Studies Department. The project incorporates my experience and research conducted during my study abroad experience in Argentina, Spanish, and critical study and theory. Throughout the project, I examine the dichotomy between assimilation and liberation as a framework for the LGBTQ movement, and the commonalities in the histories of the three countries. My thesis states that: as a result of globalization and what I call the transatlantic trade of ideas, the LGBTQ movements in Spain, Argentina and the U.S. have all adapted a limited and ultimately …
