Visions of Research in Music Education

This study addresses how high school band directors operationalize their values for music education in their band program s. High school band directors described that their values developed from a variety of influences, namely their educator identity, and the experience of their own participation in high school and collegiate music. I employed a qualitative methodology to determine emergent themes and compare participant responses and band program curricula. Findings from this study indicate these values inform many band directors’ decisions regarding high school band curricula, which they operationalize in curricular outcomes, and through a variety of artistic and educational opportunities for …

There still pop up more or less sensational historic documents in the field of recorded opera. This 60-year-old broadcast from the Metropolitan Opera was not unknown -it has even been in circulation for quite some time among collectors but then in such inferior sound that it gave very little pleasure. Now it appears, in more than acceptable sound, where both chorus and orchestra are amazingly well reproduced in a close recording. The solo voices are so life-like that they are almost touchable. The entry in McFarland's sales catalogue of books on the performing arts begins with the statement:" George Jellinek, announcer of the beloved WQXR radio show 'The Vocal Scene'..." For those who have listened to Mr. Jellinek's programs over three decades, the statement could just as well have begun: "Beloved George Jellinek, announcer of the WQXR radio show 'the Vocal Scene'..." That might have been inappropriate in a publisher's catalog, but for his thousands of listeners and fans nationwide, it would seem to be a favor statement .

An inexhaustible source of frustration for writers about the past, people and events, is the ongoing discovery of relevant materials. As time passes, documents and artifacts come to light sometimes through further search, sometimes by serendipity. Every time that happens, the writer and and researcher can just grit his teeth, and either ignore the fickle hand of of fate that slipped him some useful material too late, or continue to expand on his chosen subject and append a small piece of writing to is published research.

Over the years our members have shared their memories of Jussi in his concert and opera appearances and here we collect a sample of those, by Karl Hekler, Ed Walter, Don Goldberg, Bill Clayton, and Mati Zeiti. Karl and Ed may be our leading Jussi-cologists, since in many years of opera-going each heard Jussi a total of 33 times, Coincidentally, and they both made a point of going backstage later performances to engage the tenor in conversation.

Ruggero Leoncavallo's Pagliacci is often treated as a clone of its perpetual harness-mate, Pietro Mascagni's Cavalleria rusticana , and it does share a common dramatic form: an amatory betrayal leads to homicide on a hot Mediterranean day, the sanguinary denouncement delayed long enough for the orchestra to play a melting intermezzo. Leoncavallo's opera, however, is of more cosmopolitan stripe than Cavalleria, which has a certain hot-from-the-griddle crudity of gesture and craft.

Jussi Bjorling was neither the first nor the last tenor to sing the roles of Turiddu in Cavalleria rusticana and Canio in Pagliacci in the same evening. He may well however have been the youngest ever, for he was only twenty-five when he first sang both roles at the Royal Opera in Stockholm on April 21,1936: a feat he repeated -only in Sweden- again in 1936 and also in 1938, 1944, 1948, 1954 and 1955. Canio in Leoncavallo's Pagliacci occupies a special position in Jussi Bjorling's repertoire. During the twenty years he sang 1te role (1936-55), he gave only twenty performances, always in Swedish and almost always at the Stockholm Opera (the exceptions: three early performances in Germany and Austria). The present article will follow his reviews, in chronological order; they show that his singing was found brilliant from the very beginning while his acting developed over the years, even if some reviewers always retained their reservations in that respect

After arriving in Stockholm (July 10), we bid a fond farewell to our bus driver, Bjorn, and most of our Swedish companions, and boarded the Silja-line ferry Symphony for Helsinki. The ship was more of a floating shopping mall than a cruise ship, but a good time was had by all as we spread ourselves from Commodore Class to Steerage. The 2007 Summer JBS Swedish safari opened on July 4th in Borlange at the Jussi Bjorling Museum there, a place that some of us regard as the "center of the universe." This year's Museum program was unusual in the emphasis on singers other than JB, and on aspects of Jussi in areas other than singing. Really. The Jussi Bjorling Stipendium prize has been awarded by the Kungliga Operans Solister (Royal Opera's Soloists, www.operasolisterna.se) regularly since 1970. The award is normally given to singers and includes a substantial cash prize to someone active in the musical life in Dalarna, regardless of whether that person is a singer.

Anna-Lisa and Jussi Bjorling flew to New York in late February 1958, with a major tour of some 20 concerts scheduled for Jussi during March and April. Jussi kicked off his tour with a sold-out concert al Carnegie Hall that became one of his most famous, since it was recorded and eventually released by RCA [Cantor Don Goldberg had a role in finding the original tapes, see Ch. 27 of Jussi for this and more on reviews and other events of this tour]. At this time, Jussi was in great form vocally, with no health complaints.

I have a special memory of Anna-Lisa Bjorling, that came to me at once when I heard of her death. In March 1957 I was in the Army, stationed in Petersburg, VA. I went AWOL (easy to do; I did it many times without being caught) to attend the March 19th preformance of Trovatore in Philadelphia. I got off the bus, met my Jussi biddy, Mike Sanders, who came in form New York City. We didn't have tickets, but just went on inside and mingled with the crowd. We got caught and claimed that "We're guests of Mr. Bjorling." We …

Anna-Lisa Bjorling-Barkman -An Appreciation

Over a year ago, the Bjoring family lost their eldest member, Jussi's widow, Anna-Lisa Bjorling-Barkman. She died on November 24,2006, in Stockholm after a short illness. With her passing the members of the Jussi Bjorling societies also lost someone very special, their devoted patron and societal friend.

Our JBS-USA Board met in Minneapolis during June 9-11, 2006, weekend at the same time as the local Schubert Club's Mid-Summer Song Festival. Our idea was to attract some JBS members to join us for a Jussi-program to be held at the interesting American Swedish Institute there, and to participate in some of the Schubert Club's excellent programs: free lunchtime lieder recitals, concerts by Hakan Hagegard, Bolcom & Morris, and others.
