Those of us who heard some of Jussi Bjorling's radio broadcasts from the 1940s and 1950s in a good sound, via recordings obtained from the Library of Congress in 2002 by the JB Museum, have wanted to make those generally available. But the legal arrangements agreed to in 2002 forbade general release of that material, and or attempts to negotiate new arrangements with NBC Universal have been met with completely unrealistic financial demands.

Italian songs were not a particularly large part of JB's repertoire, but the existing recordings show that in this smaller format -as in opera- he could compete well with native singers. We know that Jussi sang 11 different songs at some time, and nine of those are preserved (I do not include Se i miei sospiri," which is not of Italian origin although written to an Italian text, and has been attributed to Alessandro Stradella. Rigoletto is fortunate to have many good recordings that capture the drama as well as the opportunities for vocal display that are inherent in this breakthrough masterpiece among Verdi's operas. My own favorite version has been RCAs classic 1956 recording made with Met Opera stars Robert Merrill, Roberta Peters, Giorgio Tozzi, and of course Jussi Bjorling, all in prime voice and with Janel Perlea leading the Rome Opera forces.

When I first heard recordings of Jussi Bjorling, I was struck by the brightness of his voice, the beauty of his sound, and the brilliance of his high notes. He surpassed all the tenors I had heard on records except Enrico Caruso. When I saw Bjorling live, I became aware of another advantage he had over other singers: his voice was produced effortlessly, as if it floated outside and above him. Bjorling's technique became the standard I used to judge other singers. It also led me to analyze singing technique and style.

It's Midsummer Eve in the early 60s. I have to catch a train, and I'm late. The taxi dispatcher tells me there a re no cabs available, followed by, "What's your name"? I answer "Voghera;· followed by-complete silence on the phone. Then the pleasantly suprising response: the name that moved me to the front of the taxi line was Tullio Voghera.

In 1954 Arturo Toscanini (1873-1957) chose to include Verdi's A Masked Ball in his NBC Symphony radio broadcasts. For solists, the 87-year-old maestro had in the past few years been relying on a familiar troop of singers: Herva Nelli, Licia Albanese, Giuseppe Valdengo, Jan Peerce, Nicola Moscona, and Robert Merrill, among others. Besides providing Toscanini with a set of able-bodied voices these brave-hearts also accommodated blow-ups. Toscanini himself wanted no superstars; by now he was inclined to consider a singer as simply another instrument of the orchestra. Like George Jellinek, my awrareness came through a local record store, in my case supplied by an enthusiastic owner who played Bjorling's "Che gellda manina" for me. Two great artists of the Stockholm Opera's "iron gang" have left us with only a few weeks in between: first Erik Saeden, now Elisabeth Soderstrom. Investigating The Music Learning Journeys Of A Student From Cyprus: A Case Study, Maria Papazachariou-Christoforou

Visions of Research in Music Education

The purpose of this case study was to explore the music-making and learning practices of a male elementary student from Cyprus in different settings, inside and outside school. It considers that individuals take many different pathways to become musicians. Their journeys might include contexts in a broad educational spectrum from highly structured and sequential, to informal, and enculturating. The study investigated the characteristics and practices of the diverse teaching-learning contexts involving the participant, the intersection of those settings, and the student's perceptions, feelings, and thoughts about the value of music experiences in those settings for his musical growth.
