Bbc's Cd Masters Program Names Jussi Bjorling A "Featured Artist"

We heard from our friends Des Lockett and Eric Wimbles, of the UK's JB Appreciation Society, that the "CD Masters" radio program on BBC's Radio 3 had designated Jussi as its "Featured Artist" for the week August 18-22. This meant that the program's fine host, Rob Cowan, would be selecting and commenting on several of Jussi's recordings each day to play during the timeslot 10:00-11:30 AM, London time. The Vocal Arts Society of Washington DC regularly presents a superb concert series of some of the best singers in the world, including promising young names as well as established stars. For instance, this season their concerts feature Renee Fleming, Susan Graham, Mattias Goerne, Ewa Podles as well as new Russian lyric tenor Daniil Shtoda, a stocky lad of 25 who gets reviews that sound something like Jussi's back in the 1930s.

We came to Manhattan from Brazil, Chile. Cuba, Israel, Italy, Sweden, the U.K.- and The U.S., from Massachusetts to California, from Minnesota to Texas. Not to mention NY, N.J, CT, PA etc., altogether over 150 strong. We gathered at the New Yorker Hotel, on 8th Avenue at 34th Street, for 12 major programs and a half-dozen smaller events starting on Thursday, October 24. and ending at noon on Sunday, October 27. We first heard Jussi Bjorling in the autumn of 1937, but we had certainly heard of him before that. His first gramophone recordings, arias from Tosca, La fanciulla del West, La boheme, Aida and Rigoletto, had already been issued, and the advance publicity had spoken of "a new Caruso", a claim which led the great English critic, Ernest Newman, to comment: "Here lies as usual a press-agent". (This is said to be the wording of a famous inscription on a gravestone somewhere in the U.S.A.)
